U.S. Army to celebrate its 227th birthday at Columbus race

06/10/2002

The United States Army will celebrate its 227th birthday in a big way this weekend, using the 38th annual Pontiac Excitement NHRA Nationals presented by Summit Racing at National Trail Raceway as a backdrop.
The U.S. Army has a big presence on the POWERade Drag Racing Series with Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher's Top Fuel dragster.

The prominent military branch, which sponsors Top Fuel driver Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, will conduct a special cake-cutting ceremony at 1:30 p.m., Friday, in the Army team's pit area to help commemorate the occasion. A U.S. Army band will be in attendance to play "Happy Birthday," while entertaining the fans with some popular military songs.

Additionally, the first 15,000 fans to enter the gates at National Trail Raceway on Friday will receive American flags for not only the birthday celebration, but also to participate in Flag Day, which also takes place Friday.

Weather permitting, a special fireworks show is also scheduled upon completion of Friday evening's qualifying session.
