Gallant and Newberry earn wins at Cecil County Dragway
RISING SUN, Md. - In the final results at the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event being held at Cecil County Dragway, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Art Gallant and Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Bob Newberry emerged victorious in their respective classes.
In Top Alcohol Dragster, NHRA Northeast Division points leader Art Gallant earned his forth divisional win of the year when he defeated Pacific Division runner Duane Shields of Las Vegas, Nev. In the final Gallant used a 5.394-second run at 250.60 mph to defeat Shields, who ran 5.588 seconds at 252.71 mph.
This win helps Gallant gain vital points over Shields, who is currently the Boxboro, Mass., runner's closest competitor in the chase for the national championship. This victory also helps Gallant widen his divisional points lead over defending NHRA Northeast Division Champion Cliff Bozzelli of Absecon, N.J.
In Top Alcohol Funny Car, former NHRA National Champion Bob Newberry of Schenectady, N.Y., earned his first NHRA Northeast Division title of the year when he defeated Paul Gill of Brockton, Mass., in the class final. In final Gill got the advantage off the line, but it wouldn't be enough to hold off Newberry, who ran low elapsed time of the event, 5.785 seconds at 246.75 mph, to Gill's 5.833 at 246.12 mph.
Winners in other categories are defending NHRA National Champion Don Stratton of Beloit, Ohio in Comp Eliminator; Angelo DiTocco of Bronx, N.Y., in Super Stock; Brian Van Poppel of Perry Hall, Md., in Stock Eliminator; Frank Cicerale of Piscataway, in Super Comp; Marc Combs of New Winsor, Md., in Super Gas; and Steve Feller of Pleasant Valley, N.Y., in Super Street.

Rain washes out opening round of Alcohol
RISING SUN, Md. - In the final qualifying at Cecil County Dragway, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Duane Shields and Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Bob Newberry took the No. 1 qualifying positions in their classes.
Shields, of Las Vegas, Nev., outran the Top Alcohol Dragster field with a pass of 5.528 seconds at 256.45 mph to take the top spot in the class. In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Schenectady, N.Y., resident Newberry made a 5.855-second, 243.85-mph run to take the pole.
Finals eliminations in both Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car were scheduled to take place Saturday afternoon, but were interrupted by rain before Funny Car could be completed.
In Top Alcohol Dragster the drivers who advanced were Duane Shields of Las Vegas, Nev., defending NHRA Northeast Division Champion Cliff Bozzelli of Absecon, N.J., Arthur Gallant of Boxboro, Mass., and Doug Foley of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.
Top qualifiers in other classes were Michele Costa of Freehold, N.J., in Comp Eliminator; Joe Scott of Sunbury, Pa., in Super Stock and Art Leong of Brooklyn, N.Y., in Stock Eliminator.
Sunday's racing action will feature the conclusion of eliminations in Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars, as well as eliminations in Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.
Gates at Cecil County Dragway open Saturday at 8 a.m. with eliminations set to continue at 10 a.m. Tickets are $15 and include a pit pass. Children 11 and under are admitted free with a paid adult. Gill and Shields lead Alcohol qualifying after first day

Shields, of Las Vegas, Nev., outran the Top Alcohol Dragster field with a pass of 5.528 seconds at 256.45 mph to take the top spot in the class. In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Brockton, Mass., resident Gill made a 5.930-second, 241.37-mph run to take the pole.
Top qualifiers in other classes were Michele Costa of Freehold, N.J., in Comp Eliminator; Joe Scott of Sunbury, Pa., in Super Stock and Art Leong of Brooklyn, N.Y., in Stock Eliminator.
Saturday's racing action will feature 260-mph Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars, as well as the continuation of qualifying in all classes. There is also a Pro Modified exhibition scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Cecil County Dragway hosts NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series
RISING SUN, Md. - Cecil County Dragway will host the NHRA Northeast Division's final round of the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Aug. 23-25. The event is the last of seven in Northeast Division competition and will feature more than 500 drivers in eight racing categories including 260-mph Top Alcohol Dragsters (TAD) and Top Alcohol Funny Cars (TAFC).
In TAD, the current fight is between Art Gallant of Boxboro, Mass., and defending division champion Cliff Bozzelli, an Absecon, N.J., resident. Bozzelli won here a year ago, one of five trips he made to the winner's circle.
In TAFC, defending divisional and national champions Manzo is cleaning up in the division. The Morganville, N.J., resident has seven TAFC national championships, including five in the last five years, as well as 12 divisional titles to his credit. Manzo won here a year ago over Schenectady, N.Y., resident Bob Newberry.
Other drivers who won at Cecil County Dragway last year are Frank Aragona in Comp Eliminator; Dan Fletcher in Super Stock; Robert Pare in Stock; Jeff Livezey in Super Comp; Darlene Staub in Super Gas; and Bob Farrell in Super Street.
This is also the last chance for Northeast Division racers to earn points for a berth on the team that will represent the division at the Jeg's Allstar event at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., in September.
Gates at Cecil County Dragway open at 8 a.m. each day. Qualifying and time trials begin at 10 a.m. Friday. TAD and TAFC will have two qualifying sessions Friday, at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. A Pro Mod exhibition is scheduled and they will qualify at 7:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. Qualifying and time trials will continue Saturday at noon for Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street. TAD, TAFC and Pro Mod will run all rounds of eliminations Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. All other classes will begin eliminations at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
Adult tickets, including pit pass, are $15 each day. A two-day ticket is $28, and children 11 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.
The event is part of a 45-race, $6.5 million series contested across the country. Drivers are competing for a part of a $561,000 champions' purse. They will earn points leading to national and division titles as well as a berth on the team that will represent the Northeast Division at the Jeg's Allstar event in September.

SCHEDULE: Time trials and qualifying schedule for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series:
FRIDAY, Aug. 23 -- Gates open at 8 a.m. Qualifying and time trials begin at 10 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car qualifying sessions are scheduled at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Pro Mod qualifying exhibition is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m.
SATURDAY, Aug. 24 -- Gates open at 8 a.m. Final qualifying and time trials are scheduled to begin at noon. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run all rounds of eliminations beginning at 5 p.m. Pro Mod eliminations begin at 5:30 p.m.
SUNDAY, Aug. 25 -- Gates open at 8 a.m. Eliminations for Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street begin at 9:30 a.m.TICKETS: GENERAL ADMISSION/PIT PASS -- $15 Friday, $15 Saturday, $15 Sunday. PURSE: The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors will vie for cash and contingency awards of $159,300, part of the 45-race, $6.5 million series.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND -- a $561,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2002 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional champions and national champions. Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.SEALED POWER LOW QUALIFIER BONUS -- a $220,500 overall bonus fund from Federal-Mogul's Sealed Power brand to the low qualifiers at each of the 45 Lucas Oil events and the 23 NHRA national events: $1,250 each in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car; $400 each in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock; and $200 in Stock. (TAD and TAFC compete at 16 of 23 national events.)
JEG'S ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $100,000 point fund from Jeg's High Performance. The 2002 Jeg's Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2002 Jeg's Allstars, held in conjunction with the NHRA Nationals in Chicago, Sept. 26-29, 2002. Points are based on in-division races only.
The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $20,000 towing fund to get to the event.
FEATURES: More than 500 drivers in the eight racing categories. Eight-car fields in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, featuring five-second, 260 mph side-by-side racing.
