Last year’s 22nd edition of this traditional Southern event rated high on the drama scale. Hometown favorite Whit Bazemore defeated archrival and perennial Atlanta finalist John Force in the Funny Car final round to win for the second straight event. In Top Fuel, the biggest underdog in perhaps all of fuel racing, Don Sosenka, advanced to the semifinals on opponents’ miscues before losing to Doug Herbert. Herbert was Larry Dixon’s fifth final-round victim of the year. Allen Johnson won Pro Stock for the first time in three years with his Neon, and Angelle Savoie won her team’s hometown race in Pro Stock Bike.
