POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 39th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals: W/L Driver RT ET Speed (W) Del Worsham (Checker Schuck's Kragen Firebir0.075 4.793 318.54 (L) Scotty Cannon (Oakley Stratus) 0.075 DQ-Centerline 11:36 AM Scotty is most likely in a Funnycar for the last time this weekend. He has said if anyone else is interested he would listen but Pro Mod is where he's bound. Scotty is three up and ten down against Del for his Funnycar career. It was a dead even leave between the pair but one of the center line cones got in Scotty's way and he sent it flying. Worsham takes the automatic win and runs quicker than he qualified. (W) John Force (Castrol GTX Mustang) 0.067 4.791 322.58 (L) Tony Bartone (K&N Filters Firebird) 0.052 9.852 102.86 Force is here for round one bad hands and all. It's been a quiet weekend for the Champ but he'd like to make some noise in eliminations. Bartone is driving for Dunn this weekend. Force has never met Tony Bartone in an elimination round until today. Bartone strikes the tires early and his event is over. Force his best pass of the weekend to move to the second round. (W) Tony Pedregon (Castrol Syntec Mustang) 0.058 4.722 320.28 (L) Cruz Pedregon (Advance Auto Parts Firebird) 0.036 5.690 174.08 The brothers two meet here in round one. If you believe the rumors this is a match between 2004 teammates. Overall Cruz is 7-11 against his brother. Tony said in his post qualifying interview that Cruz was 'going down tomorrow' and he was right. Cruz took the lead at the hit but the car drove him to the centerline and he had to bail out of the throttle to keep the car in his own lane. (W) Bob Bode (Promotorsports\Arbee Firebird) 0.128 5.686 268.33 (L) Gary Densham (AAA of So. Cal. Mustang) 0.108 7.809 112.24 Densham will be around in 2004 but we just don't know where yet. We may know as soon as tomorrow. Bob Bode is 0-1 against Densham but now the score is tied. Gary has problems and Bode takes the win. Bode got close to the line but didn't cross. (W) Whit Bazemore (Matco Tools Stratus) 0.044 8.043 98.84 (L) Bob Gilbertson (O'Reilly Auto Parts Firebird-0.011(R) DQ-Centerline Gilbertson loses twice on this run. He redlights for the third time this season and then takes out a cone down track. Bazemore was there for the taking as he smoked the tires hard at about 300 feet. Centerline cones are on the endangered species list today. (W) Gary Scelzi (Oakley Stratus) 0.072 4.817 323.66 (L) Ron Capps (Skoal Racing Camaro) 0.049 8.607 95.19 The winner of this match will face Force in the second round. Scelzi is down 1-2 against Capps for his short Funnycar career. These two have raced each other in just about everything that rolls. Sprints to go karts, these two have done it. Capps blows it up big time early in the run. He had pedaled a couple of times and then it just blew it's self up. Scelzi gets another nice run on the books but appeared to nip a few pistons in the lights as there was smoke coming out of both banks of headers. We're down for a few to clean the right lane after Capp's problems. (W) Tim Wilkerson (Levi, Ray & Shoup Firebird) 0.057 4.770 322.42 (L) Phil Burkart (Checker Schucks Kragen Firebir0.111 11.029 66.56 Wilkerson and Burkart light'em up as the Safari pulls off the rack. A real surprise here is that Tim Wilkerson is 0-2 against Burkart. Not this time. Burkart's ride goes silent at about 200 feet and Wilkerson makes his best pass of the weekend. Couldn't see anything wrong with Burkart's car and it just appeared to quit. (W) Cory Lee (Artisan T2 Firebird) 0.083 4.822 316.82 (L) Tommy Johnson Jr. (Skoal Racing Camaro) 0.083 4.925 314.97 This is the #8 and #9 pairing off of the qualifying list. We had to wait while they cleaned the lane a bit after Phil Burkart. There was a bit of 'stuff' in the first sixty feet. Identical reaction times for the two drivers. Lee pulled away and carded the best ET and mph of his career. Next round Lee will face Tony Pedregon without lane choice. Force will have choice over Scelzi; Wilkerson over Bode and Worsham over Bazemore.

Funny Car Results for Elimination Round 2

POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 39th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals: W/L Driver RT ET Speed (W) Del Worsham (Checker Schuck's Kragen Firebir0.082 4.834 319.60 (L) Whit Bazemore (Matco Tools Stratus) 0.032 NT-Broke After Staging 1:27 PM Final call for Funnycar round two to the lanes. First pair features Bazemore, who had problems in the first round and Del Worsham who polished off Scotty Cannon. No reprieve for Whit this time. He got away with tire smoke in the first round but Del ends his weekend in the second round. Bazemore struck the tires almost at the hit. Del streaked away for the win. Bazemore was not able to roll the entire quarter mile and gets no time for this round. (W) Tim Wilkerson (Levi, Ray & Shoup Firebird) 0.105 4.890 318.32 (L) Bob Bode (Promotorsports\Arbee Firebird) 0.120 5.162 267.96 Who ever wins this pair will get Del Worsham as the prize in the semi final. Bode was just a tick behind Wilkerson to about 330. At that point holes went out and the big rear slicks were spinning hard. Wilkerson cards another nice pass, but not quick enough to get lane choice against Del. (W) Cory Lee (Artisan T2 Firebird) 0.087 4.870 321.27 (L) Tony Pedregon (Castrol Syntec Mustang) 0.067 6.773 132.40 Big upset here. Tony was on and off the pedal several times before half track. He finally had to give it up and watch Cory Lee streak away for the round win. Lee will face either Force or Scelzi in the semi final depending on what happens in the next pair. Well, Tonys still the Champ! (W) Gary Scelzi (Oakley Stratus) 0.085 4.751 326.16 (L) John Force (Castrol GTX Mustang) -0.013(R) 4.805 315.42 Another big surprise. Force goes RED for the fourth time this season! That's the last of the JFR Mustangs at this event. Scelzi stops on the track after earning lane choice over Lee. One interesting point is that the Scelzi crew was so tight on time that they didn't warm the car before bringing it to the starting line.

Who's going to the final? We're about to find out. What a dragrace! Only .003 at the start and Wilkerson had the lead. Worsham drives around Tim at the lights and wins a close one. Del Worsham's MOV: 0.0034 seconds (approximately 19 inches). (W) Cory Lee (Artisan T2 Firebird) 0.059 5.303 266.53 (L) Gary Scelzi (Oakley Stratus) 0.087 5.700 185.33 Oh, this is so CLOSE. Scelzi goes up in smoke and pedals a couple of times. He finally gave in up frustration and watched Lee. Lee had his hands full off the starting line as the car turned left on him. The Left rear tire crossed one line of the two on the center, but not the second. It was second but he was good for the win. Folks if you see this on TV it WAS that close.

Funny Car Results for Final Round

POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4 eliminations in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 39th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals: W/L Driver RT ET Speed (W) Del Worsham (Checker Schuck's Kragen Firebir-0.046 5.001 226.39 (L) Cory Lee (Artisan T2 Firebird) 0.080 DQ-Centerline 4:16 PM The final pair has pulled out onto the racing surface. The race missed it's TV window but Sports Center on ESPN is going with live coverage of the Funnycar and Top Fuel finals. Teammates line up together in the final round and earlier Cory Lee made the comment that this could be his last ride in a funnycar as he has nothing signed for next year. Oh your not going to believe this! Cory lee takes out the 660 markers and after Worsham redlights. The winner is Del Worsham wins after his redlight. Told you those blocks are on the endangered species list.
