DRAGSTER staffers win seven International Automotive Media Awards
11/26/2003
NHRA's National DRAGSTER magazine collected seven International Automotive Media Awards (IAMA) at a banquet in New York City on Nov. 18. Highlighting the event was National DRAGSTER staff photographer Marc Gewertz being selected as the recipient of the 2003 Best of Graphics award for his dramatic photo of three-time series champion Angelle Savoie and her team celebrating their Pro Stock Bike victory at Houston Raceway Park.
Each year IAMA awards gold, silver, and bronze medallions to the automotive media on a points system in a variety of categories. Gold-award winners scoring 98 points or better are then judged against one another to determine the Best of Division winners in a variety of categories. Gewertz's photo was selected for the Best of Graphics honor over gold-winning photos, covers, and layouts from notable publications such as Automobile, AutoWeek, the Chicago Tribune, and the Houston Chronicle.
Gewertz's prestigious award was one of several honors National DRAGSTER received at the banquet. The magazine also took home two additional gold medallions, two silver, and a bronze, for a medallion total second in the newspaper division only to the Chicago Tribune. Joining Gewertz in receiving a gold award were Contributing Editor Rob Geiger for his feature article, 'A John Force Christmas', and Art Director Matthew Hurd for his photo-illustration, 'Happy 90th Birthday, Wally Parks'. Silver-award winners were Associate Editor Bruce Dillashaw for his writing 'Forget 6,000 Horsepower' and Hurd for his cover design featuring Senior Photographer Richard Brady's picture of the red Worsham Racing Funny Car entitled 'Shining Bright'. Finally, the entire National DRAGSTER writing staff earned a bronze medallion in the Best Single Issue category for the 'Mac Tools U.S. Nationals Souvenir II'.
The 2003 IAMA ceremony was hosted by the Madison Avenue Sports Car Driving & Chowder Society. Awards are administered by the International Society for Vehicle Preservation, a nonprofit educational organization.
