CHANDLER, Ariz. - PHOENIX - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 20th annual Checker Schuck's Kragen NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run: Left Lane: Keith Jackson Runs 12.936/69.08, Now #2 Right Lane: Stephen Neese Runs 5.561/212.73, Now #1 Current weather conditions: 72 degrees, 47 percent relative humidity, the barometer 28.89 inches, 2362 feet adjusted altitude with a track temperature of 103 degrees. Jackson was up in smoke by 200 feet. Neese's car nosed over around 800 feet. Left Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.010/296.96, Now #1 Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 8.738/90.67, Now #3 Head started to blister the hides around 300 feet. Bartone was eating up engine parts starting around 1200 feet. Left Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 9.604/105.54, Now #5 Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 7.639/114.30, Now #3 Gilbertson was up in smoke as soon as he hit the throttle. Haddock got out to about 200 feet and then pulled up the front end. When the front end came back down he got out of the groove and close to the centerline and clicked it off. Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 10.316/83.75, Now #7 Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.962/294.37, Now #1 Pedregon started to haze the tires around 100 feet and clicked it off. Capps was hazing the tires as he crossed the finish line. Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr.Runs 4.912/311.99, Now #1 Right Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.934/299.20, Now #2 A couple of good looking passes here, both cars keeping the candles lit and the Goodyears stuck. Left Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 4.968/281.19, Now #4 Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.064/279.96, Now #6 Pedregon was was mixing up cylinders on the top end. Burkart with a nice looking pass until about 1200 feet and then the engine went away. Left Lane: Eric Medlen Runs 4.908/307.30, Now #1 Right Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 4.927/310.98, Now #3 This was a good looking side-by-side drag race, both cars straight down Broadway. Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.947/306.33, Now #6 Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.891/310.41, Now #1 Force launched hard and keep right in the groove to to the top of the list. Good looking pass for Wilkerson. Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 5.844/169.74, Now #13 Right Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.878/319.60, Now #1 Worsham started to haze the tires around 200 feet and pedaled it one time and then went back up in smoke. Scelzi with a great looking pass and big top end speed. Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 5.975/162.80, Now #14 Right Lane: Jerry Toliver No Time, Now #20 Toliver was up in smoke as soon as he hit the throttle and then coasted to a stop before he got to the finish line. Densham started to lose traction just before half track and was off and back on the throttle, but back up in smoke before he clicked it off.

Johnson Jr with good looking pass until right before the finish line when his engine let go. Medlen with a real nice pas to move into the top half of the show and that will wrap up day one of qualifying.
