LAS VEGAS - LAS VEGAS 1 - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Fifth annual NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
     Right Lane: Rob Passey       Runs 9.555/85.77, Now #1
1:15 p.m. Passey shook the tires for the first 200 feet and he clicked it off.
      Left Lane: Don Sosenka      Runs 5.360/270.92, Now #2
     Right Lane: Steven Chrisman  Runs 5.201/268.54, Now #1
Sosenka was moving around his lane on the top end of the track. There were no apparent problems for Chrisman.
      Left Lane: Brady Kalivoda   Runs 4.636/306.67, Now #1
     Right Lane: Scott Palmer     Runs 4.998/227.27, Now #2
Kalivoda sets a career best elapsed time with this pass. Palmer's engine went silent at about 1000 feet.
      Left Lane: Mike Strasburg   Runs 4.778/300.60, Now #3
     Right Lane: John Smith       Runs 4.735/309.56, Now #2
Strasburg was mixing up the cylinders at the finish line and still managed to run his quickest and fastest pass of this season.
      Left Lane: Rhonda Hartman-Smith
                                  Runs 5.274/255.53, Now #7
     Right Lane: Doug Herbert     Runs 4.681/313.66, Now #2
Hartman-Smith hiked the front wheels into the air twice before she reached half track. Herbert dropped a cylinder at the finish line.
      Left Lane: Scott Kalitta    Runs 4.523/328.22, Now #1
     Right Lane: Larry Dixon      Runs 4.564/325.53, Now #2
Kalitta drove through some early tire shake to move to the top of the ladder for now.
      Left Lane: Scott Weis       Runs 4.613/287.72, Now #3
     Right Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.653/281.60, Now #5
Weis lost the blower belt at about 1200 feet. McClenathan was to the right of the groove in the middle section of the track.
      Left Lane: David Baca       Runs 4.732/306.40, Now #7
     Right Lane: Darrell Russell  Runs 15.072/78.32, Now #15
Russell was up in smoke almost immediately and he shut it off. Baca drove through a little early tire haze.
      Left Lane: David Grubnic    Runs 4.591/327.82, Now #4
     Right Lane: Brandon BernsteinRuns 4.542/328.22, Now #2
A good looking pass for both drivers.
      Left Lane: Doug Kalitta     Runs 5.399/238.55, Now #17
     Right Lane: Tony Schumacher  Runs 4.625/303.09, Now #6
Schumacher dropped a cylinder early and left some oil on the track near the finish line. Kalitta smoked the tires at 300 feet and he pedaled it a couple times before he got the tires to hook up.

Russell took it straight down Broadway to move into the top half of the field.

                                  Best prior run: 5.399/238.55, Was #18
Passey was having engine problems early and he was off the throttle at about 150 feet. Kalitta sets both ends of the track record while running the fastest speed in Top Fuel history.

Chrisman was to the left of the groove from about 100 feet through half track. His speed was a career best for him. Sosenka was trailing engine smoke from about 800 feet through the finish line. He left oil on the track so the Safety Safari is rolling.
