Wilkerson slows a little from his qualifying run, Pedregon picks up a few hundredths. Neither car missed a beat, right down the groove.

Medlen gets a slight advantage off the line. Densham starts pulling closer at the 330-foot mark, then Medlen starts pulling away again. Medlen gets about 1200 feet out, the chutes come out, not sure why, but he hangs on to take the win. Medlen will run Wilkerson in round two, Wilkerson with lane choice. Eric Medlen's incremental margins: 60ft(0.015), 330 ft(0.008), 660ft(0.010), 1,000ft(0.016). MOV: 0.0044 seconds (approximately 2 feet).(W) Bob Gilbertson (Stewart & Stevenson Firebird0.089 5.030 261.47 (L) Tony Pedregon (Quaker State Monte Carlo) 0.131 6.614 141.28This is 27th time Pedregon has qualified number one, the second one this year. he won his first national event here in 1996. Gilbertson has started from the 16th position 18 times in 90 NHRA starts. Pedregon drops a cylinder right off the line and breaks the tires loose. He pedals two or three times, then finally gives up on the run.(W) Whit Bazemore (Matco Tools Stratus) 0.075 4.865 316.97 (L) Ron Capps (Skoal Racing Monte Carlo) 0.082 4.945 265.33Bazemore won here in '02 and is 13-9 against Capps. This is Capps' lowest start since Englishtown 2000.Capps was last off the line, then started losing ground. He never got close, Bazemore increasing his lead at every incremental, then shuts off early.

Toliver has been in two final rounds this year.Johnson gets about 300 feet out and strikes the tires, Toliver just a little further before he loses traction. They both pedal, Toliver able to get the slicks to bite, Johnson doesn't.
(W) Gary Scelzi (Hemi Oakley Stratus) 0.142 4.892 314.17 (L) Jim Head (Lions Gate Ent. Celica) 0.085 8.213 100.07Scelzi won this race in the Top Fuel class in '99 and ''00, but hasn't won a round here since then. Head was the runner-up at this race in 1986.Head starts moving around at the hit. he gets about 200 feet out, strikes the tires and has to abort the run. Scelzi went right down the groove and he will have lane choice over Toliver in round two.
(W) Del Worsham (Checker Schuck's Kragen Monte C0.086 4.892 316.08 (L) Tony Bartone (K&N Filters Camaro) 0.125 4.949 268.06Worsham won his first race here in '91. Bartone won here in TAFC in both '96 and '97.Bartone was last off the line but started making up ground quickly. He was quicker to every incremental, then had problems about 1100 feet out and shut down. Worsham will lose lane choice to Bazemore in round two.
(W) Phil Burkart (Checker Schucks Kragen Monte C0.112 4.829 323.89 (L) John Force (Castrol GTX Mustang) 0.107 4.918 309.20Burkart is 2-1 against Force this year, 3-5 overall. This is the third time in the last four races Force has started from the bottom half of the field.Make that 3-1 for Burkart this year. A decent run for both cars, no apparent problems for either, but Burkart drives around Force at the sixty-foot mark and pulls away. Burkart will have lane choice over Gilbertson in round two.

He goes right down the groove, the engine never missing a beat. Medlen gets about 700 feet out, strikes the tires and has to shut down.

He gets about 400 feet out, the engine blows and the burst panel and a piece of the body flies high into the air. Tha Safety Safari checks the track and finds no oil but plenty of parts.. Bazemore had a flawless run, right down the groove, and he will have lane choice over Wilkerson in the semi-finals.(W) Bob Gilbertson (Stewart & Stevenson Firebird0.085 5.060 302.28 (L) Phil Burkart (Checker Schucks Kragen Monte C0.128 7.167 120.32Burkart leaves late but starts reeling in Gilbertson. He gets about 300 feet out, pulls the wheels, then hits the ground hard, the front wheels bouncing around. The tires break loose at that point and he is forced to give up on the run.(W) Gary Scelzi (Hemi Oakley Stratus) 0.122 4.866 319.29 (L) Jerry Toliver (Schick Quattro Celica) 0.104 4.992 310.98Scelzi is last off the line, then starts making up ground and drives around Toliver before they reach the sixty-foot mark. He drives around him at that point and pulls away for the win. He will have lane choice over Gilbertson in the semi-finals.

Scelzi gets about 900 feet out, starts hazing the tires and has to pedal.

If he wins he will be second in the points standings. His last win in Atlanta came in 2002.
This is Scelzi's third career Funny Car final round, his last being in Sonoma in 2003, where he won his first Funny Car title.
They come off the line together, then Scelzi goes up in smoke. Bazemore goes right down the groove and takes the win.
