Gilbertson exorcises demons with new car

Topeka, pre-race: Funny Car racer Bob Gilbertson is pumped-up going into this weekend's NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka, the ninth race on the 23-event 2004 NHRA POWERade circuit.

After going to the semifinals two weeks ago in Atlanta and then debuting a brand-new car at last weekend's Route 66 Nationals in Chicago with four-consecutive four-second runs and beating current points leader Del Worsham in the first round, Gilbertson has moved into 12th spot in the points standings passing Skoal teammates, Ron Capps and Tommy Johnson, Jr.

"The past two weeks has been a good boost for me and my team," Gilbertson said. "We all truly believe our old car was haunted and the new car responded right away and we were rewarded with the performance we were looking for."

The addition of major sponsorship from Caribbean Soul Sportswear combined with support from Trick Tank will allow Gilbertson the extra budget to do some testing and buy more parts.

"I'm looking forward to the rest of the season now that I've got a little more money in the coffers," Gilbertson said. "We're going to do what ever it takes to achieve my goal of finishing in the top 10. We've ordered the parts we need to remain competitive for the rest of the season and I can't wait to get to Topeka."
