Results for Qualifying Round 3BRAINERD, Minn. - BRAINERD - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 23rd annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run: Left Lane: Keith Jackson Runs 5.206/260.36, Now #14 Best prior run: 5.205/272.89, Was #14 Right Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 5.986/170.64, Now #17 Best prior run: 10.296/79.77, Was #1812:50 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees, relative humidity 53 percent, barometer 28.93 inches, adjusted altitude 2,109 feet, track temperature 99 degrees.Jackson did not run last night, while Toliver's best effort yesterday left him on the outside looking in. It's relatively cool out there, but the sun has been shining all day. Toliver was up in smoke just before half-track. He pedaled it once but it smoked 'em again and he shut it off. Jackson, meanwhile, runs within a thousandth of his previous effort.
Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 5.041/269.13, Now #14 Best prior run: 5.891/159.78, Was #16 Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 8.350/96.58, Now #12 Best prior run: 4.988/309.63, Was #12Arend is running the Firebird body today. Head is still running the garish neon yellow Celica. Head got very near the wall and lifted. Arend got himself off the bump, for now.Left Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 5.263/256.55, Now #16 Best prior run: 6.529/157.83, Was #18 Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.042/296.44, Now #9 Best prior run: 4.922/307.37, Was #9Cruz now holds down the bump at 5.434, which is what Gilbertson is shooting for here. He gets in, but now he's on the bump. His run might have been quicker but something went away at the top end and now there's stuff on the track. Bartone's run was good, but not great.Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr.Runs 4.939/304.74, Now #11 Best prior run: 5.026/308.00, Was #13 Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.956/306.67, Now #8 Best prior run: 4.912/315.34, Was #8During the 10 minute clean-up of the left lane, the sun went behind a cloud, so now the track is shaded. Both teams should be pleased after this round, as TJ picks up nearly a tenth and Worsham runs another 4.9-second e.t.Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 5.128/263.20, Now #15 Best prior run: 5.434/246.08, Was #17 Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 5.017/296.37, Now #7 Best prior run: 4.907/310.84, Was #7Cruz needs to run 5.263 to get back in. He does it, thanks to some stellar driving. He was on and off the throttle once, and he had to muscle the car back into the groove. I suspect that Capps was looking for something a tad quicker.Left Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 4.924/314.24, Now #10 Best prior run: 4.973/258.71, Was #12 Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.140/227.84, Now #6 Best prior run: 4.899/315.42, Was #6Tony was three hundredths quicker than Burkart at half-track, but something went wrong after that and he shut off just before the 1000-foot mark. Burkart makes the best run of the round, and picks up two spots. The CSK cars made two good runs in this session.Left Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.901/305.70, Now #7 Best prior run: 4.939/314.90, Was #11 Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.916/316.75, Now #5 Best prior run: 4.880/309.98, Was #5A good drag race here, as Scelzi out runs Force and jumps up four spots. Force slows by three hundredths from yesterday, but posts a big speed.Left Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 8.513/91.51, Now #4 Best prior run: 4.875/306.19, Was #4 Right Lane: Eric Medlen Runs 5.108/283.55, Now #3 Best prior run: 4.865/315.93, Was #3Bazemore blew the tires off about 350 feet out. Medlen's run was a tad on the ugly side, with dropped cylinders and other unpleasant things, but at least he got it down the track.Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.840/316.15, Now #2 Best prior run: 4.813/320.43, Was #2 Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.889/310.41, Now #1 Best prior run: 4.812/319.67, Was #1Well, Gary Densham and his crew chief Jimmy Prock have this place figured out. That was his third run between 4.813 and 4.881, and he is the only driver to run three 4.8-second e.t.'s so far. Wilkerson makes a great run in the other lane, and is one round away from taking home the top spot.

Great run for Tony, the best of the round so far.
