Winners crowned at inaugural Lucas Oil event at South Georgia Motorsports Park

CECIL, Ga. - After two days of fierce NHRA Southeast Division competition, winners in eight Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series categories and the Tracstar Systems Satellites Top Sportsman Series, were crowned today at South Georgia Motorsports Park.

In Top Alcohol Dragster, Guy Kelly won his second event of the year when he defeated five-time Southeast Division champ Michael Gunderson in the class final. In the final, Kelly ran low et of the weekend, 5.477 seconds at 259.36 mph, to take out Gunderson, who ran 5.679 seconds at 267.64 mph, top speed of the event. This was the second time this year that Kelly has defeated Gunderson in the Top Alcohol Dragster final. Kelly was also victorious at the Southeast Division's last event at Montgomery Motorsports Park in Montgomery, Ala.

In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Mark Billington earned his first Lucas Oil victory of the year. In the final, Billington defeated Jay Payne, after the Claremont, Calif., racer had mechanical problems on the starting line and was unable to run. In the final round single, Billington ran 6.109 seconds at 235.19 mph to take the win. This was Billington's second final round appearance of the year. He was also a finalist at Montgomery Motorsports Park.

Other winners at the event were Mike Saye of Johnston, S.C., in Competition Eliminator; Robert Burgin of Cuthbert, Ga., in Super Stock; Jimmy Parker of Columbus, Ga., in Stock Eliminator; Jerry Sosebee of Lula, Ga., in Super Comp; Wayne Bogle of Cocoa, Fla., in Super Gas and Michael Ruff of Orlando, Fla., in Super Street. The winner in Tracstar Systems Satellites Top Sportsman, which ran in conjunction with the event this weekend, was Gilmer Hinshaw of Burlington, N.C.

Action underway at track's inaugural Lucas Oil event

CECIL, Ga. - More than 300 NHRA competitors turned out today for the opening rounds of qualifying at the inaugural NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event being held this weekend at South Georgia Motorsports Park. This weekend's event is the fourth race on the NHRA Southeast Division's seven-race tour.

After the opening rounds of qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, Guy Kelly of Wadley, Ala., and Jay Payne of Claremont, Ca., are in the No. 1 spot of their fields.

Kelly laid down a pass of 5.489 seconds at 259.11 mph to take to top spot in dragster. Following Kelly closely in the No. 2 spot is five-time division champ Michael Gunderson of Middleburg, Fla., with a pass of 5.516 seconds at 267.37 mph.

In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Payne thundered to the top of the field with a time a 5.776 seconds at 244.56 mph. Qualified second is Norcross, Ga., racer Mark Billington with a time of 5.997-seconds at 223.17 mph. Rounding out the field is Canadian racer Jeff Lancaster of Hamilton, Ontario.

For qualifying in the No. 1 spot of their respective fields, Kelly and Payne each earned $1000 from Sealed Power as part of their Low Qualifier Bonus Program.

In other qualifying action, former division champ David Rampy, of Piedmont, Ala., leads the Comp Eliminator field, while fellow Alabama racer Bobby Dennis of Shorter tops the Super Stock field. Sitting in the No. 1 spot in the Stock Eliminator field is John Livingston, who hails from Nashville. In the Tracstar Systems Satellites Top Sportsman class, which runs in conjunction with the event, Ronnie Davis of Commerce, Ga., is leading the field.

Competitors in Comp Eliminator, Super Stock and Stock Eliminator, as well as those competing in the Tracstar Systems Satellites Top Sportsman Series will have their final qualifying session tomorrow at 10 a.m., with eliminations in all categories to follow in the afternoon.

Saturday's racing action will feature final eliminations in all categories, beginning at 2 p.m. Eliminations for the 260-mph Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars begin at 5 p.m.

Gates at South Georgia Motorsports Park open tomorrow at 8 a.m. General Admission tickets are $25. Children 6-12 years old are $5 and kids 5 and under are admitted free with a paid adult. All tickets include a pit pass.

South Georgia Motorsports Park set to host its first NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing event

CECIL, Ga. - South Georgia Motorsports Park will host its first NHRA Southeast division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event June 4 and 5. The race is the fourth of seven events in the division where drivers in eight categories, including 250-mph Top Alcohol Dragster (TAD) and Top Alcohol Funny Car (TAFC), will compete for points leading to national and divisional championships.

Mark Billington of Norcross, Ga., and Jeff Lancaster of Hamilton, Ohio, are tied for second place. Billington was runner-up to Payne in Gainesville and Lancaster came in second to Payne in Montgomery.

In TAD, Guy Kelly of Wadley, Ala., is No. 1 in points. Kelly won the event in Montgomery and went to the semifinals at the division's season opener in Gainesville. Just 11 points off the pace is the division's defending TAD champion Jason Cannon of Middleburg, Fla. Cannon won in Gainesville and suffered a first-round loss in Montgomery.

Comp Eliminator veteran Larry Pritchett of Clarkrange, Tenn., has reached the final round at all three Southeast division races. He scored the win in Gainesville and is leading the point standings for the class.

Super Stock competitor Mike Crutchfield has made final-round appearances at the division's last two events. The Montgomery, Ala., racer sits in fourth place in the point standings. Tony Fuller, a Rogers, Ark., resident, is leading the Super Street points with two wins on the year. He won the region's first two races.

The division's TracStar Systems Satellites Top Sportsman Series will be run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. Top Sportsman competitors will run qualifying and eliminations along with the other classes throughout the event.

Gates at South Georgia Motorsports Park open at 8 a.m. Friday, and Saturday. Qualifying and time trials begin Friday at noon. TAD and TAFC are scheduled to make two passes Friday, at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. and Top Sportsman is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Qualifying continues Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Eliminations in all classes will start at 2 p.m. TAD and TAFC will run eliminations at 5 p.m., 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Tickets, including pit pass, are $15 Friday and $25 Saturday. Children 6- to 12-years old are $5 each day and kids 5 and under are admitted free.

PURSE: The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors will vie for cash and contingency awards of $150,010, part of the 46-race, $6.5 million series.

2003 EVENT WINNERS: This is South Georgia Motorsports Park's inaugural NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. BONUS PROGRAMS:
NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND --
a $561,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2004 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional champions and national champions. Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

SEALED POWER LOW QUALIFIER BONUS -- a $109,000 overall bonus fund from Federal-Mogul's Sealed Power brand to the low qualifiers at the 46 Lucas Oil events: $1,000 each in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car; $200 each in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock; and $100 in Stock. (TAD and TAFC compete at 43 of 46 divisional events.)

JEG'S ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $100,000 point fund from Jeg's High Performance. The 2004 Jeg's Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2004 Jeg's Allstars. Points are based on in-division races only.

The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $20,000 towing fund to get to the event.

This year, event sponsor, Jeg's High Performance, has offered a "double up" bonus to Allstars competitors. Winners in each individual class who go on to win the national event will have their Allstars prize money doubled.

TRACSTAR SYSTEMS SATELLITES TOP SPORTSMAN SERIES: Run in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Series, competitors in the Top Sportsman class are vying for division championships and a share in the $3,500 purse. Top Sportsman racers may run the seven Southeast Division Lucas Oil events as well as three Lucas Oil Series races in either the North Central or South Central Divisions.

FEATURES: More than 400 drivers in the eight racing categories. Eight-car fields in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, featuring five-second, 260 mph side-by-side racing.
