Final Eliminations:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chesterman takes second 2004 Division 5 Lucas Oil title; Wells grabs his first
BRAINERD, Minn. - Eight Lucas Oil Series Champs and one in the Kerker Motorcycle Series were crowned Sunday at Brainerd Int'l Raceway. Iowa campaigners, both defending NHRA West Central Division champions, David Wells and Cy Chesterman took the wins in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car. For Wells, it was his first win of the West Central season. For Chesterman it was the second, backing up his win a couple of weeks ago in Great Bend, Kan.
Wells hit 5.515, 260.66 mph in the TAD final to stop Randy Meyer, who had been the quickest driver in qualifying. Meyer was well off his 5.31 qualifying pace at 5.652, 245.00 mph.
Chesterman, on the other hand, was the low qualifier at 5.744 and went 5.76 in round one. However, he needed all of his starting line prowess to hold off Kirk Williams in the final, 5.836, 253.09 mph to 5.85, 249.63 mph. Williams suffered parachute failure during eliminations and used a great portion of the Brainerd road course to bring his Firebird to the halt.
Other action included a win for Texas invader Scott Benham in Competition Eliminator, and trophies for Minnesota drivers Terry Johnson (Super Stock), Kevin Haugaard (Stock), and Jami Stoen (Super Comp). Curt Harshfield and Frank Nichols Jr., both of Nebraska, won Super Gas and Super Street. In the Kerker Motorcycle action, another Nebraskan, Curtis Spracklin, took the win.

Saturday Qualifying:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chesterman takes over top spot in Alcohol Funny Car
BRAINERD, Minn. - Racers attempted to grab better qualifying numbers at Brainerd International Raceway Saturday, and defending NHRA West Central division and event Top Alcohol Funny Car champion Cy Chesterman of Sioux City, Iowa, was among those that got the job done. He moved into the No. 1 qualifying sport for Sunday's final round Eliminations with a 5.744-second, 252.57 mph effort that barely got around fellow Iowa campaigner Vern Moats, who had posted at 5.757-second run earlier.
Randy Meyer stayed on top of the Alcohol Dragster field with his Friday performance of 5.315 seconds and 254.81 mph. West Central stalwart Bruce Bowler of Denver failed to make the eight-car show, in what was a considerable surprise.
Clint Sallee is still the quick qualifier in competition Eliminator and St. Paul's Dan Larson held on to his top spot in Super Stock .

Friday Qualifying:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Defending champions outqualified in record-setting early action
BRAINERD, Minn. - In the first rounds of qualifying at Brainerd Int'l Raceway, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Randy Meyer, out of Kansas, and veteran Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Vern Moats, from Iowa, took the No. 1 qualifying positions in their classes. They were able to catch defending champions Bill Reichert and Cy Chesterman by surprise and put themselves in the provisional pole positions for their respective fields.
Meyer blistered the track for a new facility record of 5.315 seconds. The old record was held by Northeast division racer Art Gallant at 5.317 seconds and was set in 2002 at the Lucas Oil Nationals. Meyer's top speed was 246.26 mph. Reichert had the fastest speed at a whopping 271.08 mph. He holds the track speed record at 275.51 mph set last year at this event. Despite his fast speed, his elapsed time of 4.415 not only trailed Meyer but also David Wells, who carded a 5.411, 262.74 performance.
Moats, meanwhile, recorded a 5.757, 247.20 mph effort to just barely nip Chesterman's 5.777, 252.57 mph package.
Qualifying continues Saturday for the two classes with runs scheduled for 1 and 4 p.m.
Current Top qualifiers in other classes included Montana racer Clint Sallee with his B/Dragster entry in Competition eliminator, and local favorite Dan Larson of St. Paul in Super Stock with his wheel-standing Camaro

Event preview:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Division 5 Lucas Oil Series racers head north to Brainerd
BRAINERD, Minn. - Brainerd International Raceway (BIR) will host a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, June 4-6. The event will feature more than 450 cars in eight categories, including 250-mph Top Alcohol Dragsters (TAD) and Top Alcohol Funny Cars (TAFC), racing for points leading to divisional and national championships. The race is the second of six in NHRA West Central division competition.
Defending division Top Alcohol Funny Car (TAFC) champion Cy Chesterman has set out to reclaim his title. In 2003, Chesterman, of Sioux City, Iowa, made it to the final round at all seven of the NHRA Lucas Oil divisional events he attended. Chesterman scored wins here, at Bandimere Speedway in Denver, at Tri-State Raceway in Earlville, Iowa, and at an out-of-division event in Las Vegas. He was runner-up at Heartland Park Topeka in Topeka, Kan., Nebraska Motorplex in Scribner, Neb., and at S.R.C.A. Drag Strip in Great Bend, Kan.
Chesterman's most likely rival this season will be Kirk Williams of Glenwood, Iowa. Williams finished second in the points last year after winning the division TAFC crown in 2002. Williams beat Chesterman in Denver and was runner-up to him here and in Earlville.
Defending Top Alcohol Dragster (TAD) champion David Wells is trying to earn his fifth division title. Wells won two out-of-division races last year, in Joliet, Ill., and Noble, Okla., and he was runner-up at BIR and Nebraska Motorplex.
Spring Hill, Kan., resident Randy Meyer has been the division's strongest runner in TAD so far. Meyer was not behind the wheel last year but, as crew chief on the car, he led the team to the national championship. Alan Bradshaw, who will drive another TAD in NHRA's Northeast division, piloted Meyer's dragster.
Meyer got a head start on the 2004 season by competing at out-of-division races in Houston and Memphis, Tenn., where he made two final-round appearances. He was runner-up in Houston and won the Memphis event.
