BAYTOWN, Texas - HOUSTON - Notes from final, round 1 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 22nd annual O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Raymond Commisso Runs 5.884/246.57, Now #1
Right Lane: Mike Knowles Runs 6.839/214.48, Now #2
11:20 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 54 degrees, relative humidity 38 percent, barometer 29.80 inches, adjusted altitude 136 feet, track temperature 79 degrees.Wow! Commisso ripped off an awesome pass to open the only qualifying session for the Pro Mod cars. Knowles shook immediately, but Commisso hooked up and left town. Raymond Commisso's incremental times: 60ft-1.003 sec., 330ft-2.618, 660ft-3.890/196.39 mph, 1,000ft-4.972. That's the quickest ever in NHRA competition, Josh Hernandez' 5.900 was the previous best.
Left Lane: Taylor Lastor Runs 12.016/69.87, Now #4
Right Lane: Kenny Lang Runs 6.087/207.66, Now #2
This time the shake came in the left lane and the right lane produced a good run, though Lang's car nosed over before the finish line. Kenny Lang's incremental times: 60ft-1.000 sec., 330ft-2.625, 660ft-3.932/189.10 mph, 1,000ft-5.064.
Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 10.229/86.80, Now #5
Right Lane: Tim Tindle Runs 6.566/222.91, Now #3
Both cars got out about 200 feet, then shook and got sideways. Payne lifted, Tindle pedaled and continued the run.
Left Lane: Danny Rowe Runs 6.044/245.94, Now #2
Right Lane: Harold Laird Runs 8.551/106.16, Now #6
Laird got a clean start, Rowe shook and pedaled. Then Laird shook and slowed, but Rowe recovered nicely for a good result.
Left Lane: Joe Baker Runs 6.031/242.10, Now #3
Right Lane: Roger Burgess Runs 5.900/246.44, Now #2
Baker had some early shake, drove through it. Burgess made a solid launch and went right down the groove with the second-best run of the session, tying Josh Hernandez for the second-quickest ever in NHRA competition. Roger Burgess' incremental times:
60ft-0.980 sec., 330ft-2.611, 660ft-3.896/194.66 mph, 1,000ft-4.986.
Left Lane: Brad Personett Runs 8.782/122.95, Now #10
Right Lane: Rick Stivers Runs 6.100/240.08, Now #6
Personett's car always sounds awful, so it's hard to tell when he's on a bad pass, but it sounded like he pedaled at least once. Stivers made a clean run, but left a tenth of a second behind in the first 300 feet.
Left Lane: Burton Auxier Runs 9.428/101.20, Now #12
Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 6.089/234.09, Now #6

5:22 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 68 degrees, relative humidity 34 percent, barometer 29.75 inches, adjusted altitude 1,178 feet, track temperature 94 degrees.Nice, close drag race to open the round, Tindle with a small holeshot and Stivers with just enough muscle to drive by to win by a car length, running the thirdquickest ET of the event.

Lang left early, then started fishtailing about 200 feet out. Laird finally made a representative run, but still need to find a little more for tomorrow.

Knokles got caught blipping the throttle just as the tree fired. He made a very nice run, but Castellana dipped into the fives and won easily.

Personett's car was still off-pace, right from the launch. Rowe didn't stick around to see what Personett would do, also dipping into the fives, and he will have lane choice against Laird in round two.

Commisso rolled in and appeared to roll the beams, so the #1 qualifier is out of here and the #14 qualifier gets a bye to the semifinals.

Two good lights, but Baker took the early lead and extended it, winning by about a car length. Then he had a late chute, got on the brakes hard and bounced off the wall in the shutdown area - couldn't tell if the car was badly damaged or not. If he returns, he will have lane choice against teammate Castellana in the second round.

Nice, close race all the way. Jay Payne's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.019), 330 ft(0.020), 660ft(0.029), 1,000ft(0.018). MOV: 0.0011 seconds (approximately 5 inches). Payne wins, but loses lane choice to Stivers in round two.

Baker's RPMs shot way up, possibly something broken in the driveline. Castellana's car slowed a bit from yesterday's pace, but his speed was almost the same.

Laird's Corvette shook, danced, tried to cross the centerline, and he had to back off early to save it. Meanwhile, Rowe ran another ninety, with another good speed, to get the win and lane choice against Lastor in the semifinals.

Payne started shaking the tires, then got very sideways and he had to lift. Stivers also got out of the groove, further down the track, and also had to lift early to stay in his lane. That cost him lane choice against Castellana next round.

Lastor's crew "thrashed" between rounds to get his car turned around. Rowe has been "in the zone" for the first two rounds and his car has been a bracket racer, running his third mid-five-ninety of eliminations to advance to the finals, with lane choice over Stivers. Lastor ran into shake problems about 200 feet out.
