Results for Qualifying Round 1
|
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 1 - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 49th annual Kragen O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 8.668/21.26, Now #2
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.345/283.01, Now #1
2:18 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 61 degrees, relative humidity 47 percent, barometer 28.72 inches, adjusted altitude 2,025 feet, track temperature 76 degrees. We have some last minute work being done on the christmas tree and we should be ready to go with the first pair of Pro Nitro cars of the weekend. Hagan is making his debut for DSR and give the team numbers to work with. Haddock isn't as lucky as Hagan as he's off the power early and barely coasts across the finish stripe. It appears the loss of power for Haddock had something to do with the engine as the Safety Safari is in his lane doing a full clean up. 2:18 p.m.
Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.222/22.07, Now #1
Right Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.891/244.65, Now #3
2:29 p.m. Not to bad. We're back to business. Arend was away first and had opened a two tenth lead by 330ft. Arend got the full pull but it appears there might be problems with the mph lights in the left lane. Bode had the pipes go wet and he coasted to the finish.
Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.286/21.40, Now #2
Right Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 5.061/187.52, Now #5
Toliver makes his debut in the Jim Dunn racing/Canidae Pet Food Impala with a cylinder mixing hit the makes him #5. Head wandered the lane but just misses the top spot held by Arend. Again the left lane mph is bogus.
Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.038/24.27, Now #1
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.143/301.20, Now #2
Worsham just might be setting a season trend as he set a personal best run at 1000ft in the Al-Anabi 2009 Solara. Tasca was not that far back and his time nets him a solid second place at the moment.
Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.183/22.51, Now #3
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.286/304.12, Now #5
Densham was so busy keeping his Chevy in his lane he was very late in going for the laundry. He managed to get the car around the corner but he was very busy. Neff ran a nice mph but the car was off the pace down low. Mike Neff's incremental times:
60ft-0.891 sec., 330ft-2.454, 660ft-3.479/255.39 mph.
Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.289/21.37, Now #8
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.092/304.39, Now #2
Force just misses his career best ET at 1000ft but still winds up #2 to Worsham. Capps had to do some driving but winds up eighth.
Left Lane: A. Force Hood Runs 4.061/23.96, Now #2
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.164/300.40, Now #5
Marriage seems to agree with Ashley as she moves dad down a spot and shoves pops down a spot on the ladder. Pedregon makes a nice looking pass as well. Ashley Force Hood's incremental times: 60ft-0.884 sec., 330ft-2.305, 660ft-3.273/265.17 mph. Tony Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.899 sec., 330ft-2.344, 660ft-3.354/256.89 mph.
Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.037/24.27, Now #1
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.197/289.14, Now #8
By .001 Hight takes over the qualifying lead here in round 1 of qualifying. With one pair left he moves Worsham down a spot.
Beckman made a hard move at half track and has to settle for #8. Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.891 sec., 330ft-2.296,
660ft-3.252/267.85 mph.
Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 5.141/58.18, Now #17
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.205/305.91, Now #9
Wilkerson was off the pedal early after he rattled the tires. He's got to hope the second round of Pro qualifying actually happens after they run the first round on the alky classes as this hit leaves Wilk as the #17 qualifier. Pedregon gets a full pass but just misses the top half of the field. Cruz Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.891 sec., 330ft-2.409, 660ft-3.406/260.11 mph.
That ends the first round for the Funny Cars and I hate to say it but the clouds are rolling back in and it looks really ugly.

Results for Elimination Round 1
|
POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 49th annual Kragen O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals:
W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed
(W) Jack Beckman (Valvoline/MTS Charger) 0.061 4.196 284.56
(L) Cruz Pedregon (Advance Auto Parts Solara) 0.072 4.618 232.71
4:21 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 58 degrees, relative humidity 64 percent, barometer 28.88 inches, adjusted altitude 1,703 feet, track temperature 64 degrees. Pedregon is 6 - 4 against Beckman in prior events. We finally get to the first round of the Nitro Funny Cars and we match Beckman against C.Pedregon. Beckman takes the left lane after most of the others took the right. Pedregon got to about 100ft before he had to give the pedal the first of several hard slaps. Beckman kept all the candles lighted and sort of cruised on to the win. Well, maybe not THAT much of a cruise. According to Beckman he pumped a couple of rods out of the sides of the engine and has put the Safari to work...again!
(W) Del Worsham (Al-Anabi Racing Solara) 0.113 4.193 310.41
(L) Bob Bode (Alard Machine Products Impala SS) 0.043 4.744 226.39
Worsham is 2 - 0 against Bode in prior events. It's 4:39 p.m. and the call goes out. Well, here'e the debut of the new Al-Anabi Racing team. Worsham will not like his light when he sees his timeslip but certainly will take the win. He did have to give the pedal a hard slap to keep the tires glued at about 100ft. Bode really had to tip toe as he was very close to the centerline after half track.
(W) Bob Tasca III (Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustan 0.244 4.127 302.89
(L) Mike Neff (JFR/Ford Mustang) -0.014(R) 9.287 77.02
Tasca must have been frozen at the tree when the red came on. Neff goes -0.014 red and Tasca certainly didn't face that danger. Neff had the car completely sideways just off the starting line.
(W) Ashley Force Hood (Castrol GTX Mustang) 0.095 4.334 303.43
(L) Matt Hagan (Brakesafe Charger) 0.100 7.981 92.32
This is the first time Force Hood and Hagan have faced each other in eliminations. Stats are good! Both drivers pedaled early in the run. Hagan didn't move five feet before the tires were spinning and Hood pedaled at about 60ft. Big win for the Force team.
(W) Robert Hight (AAA of So. Cal Mustang) 0.155 4.159 302.62
(L) Jerry Toliver (Canidae Pet Food Monte Carlo 0.146 8.122 87.22
Hight is 2 - 0 against Toliver in prior events. Nothing changes on this run as Hight pedaled once and just ran away from Toliver in Jim Dunn's racer. Toliver spun the tires hard but his car would not recover.
(W) Ron Capps (NAPA Auto Parts Charger) 0.082 4.125 304.67
(L) John Force (Castrol GTX Mustang) 0.119 4.141 301.47
Force is 41 - 17 against Capps in prior events but Capps gets one back here in the opening round. John Force's incremental
times: 60ft-0.923 sec., 330ft-2.355, 660ft-3.337/260.76 mph. Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.916 sec., 330ft-2.356,
660ft-3.330/263.67 mph. Tasca will have lane choice over Capps by .002 in the second round.
(W) Jim Head (Team Strange Apparel Solara) 0.068 6.653 96.58
(L) Tony Pedregon (Quaker State Impala) 0.063 DQ-Centerline
This one got wild. Head lost traction early and was watching Pedregon streak away for what appeared to be an easy win. T.Ped was really loose in the other lane and the car darted to the right, crossing the centerline in the process. Pedregon's run is DQ'd and head gets to face A.Force without the advantage of lane choice.
(W) Gary Densham (RaceBricks Impala) 0.138 4.336 283.37
(L) Jeff Arend (DHL Solara) 0.092 4.736 188.25
Arend rattled the tires hard at about 60ft after drilling Densham pretty good at the light. He pedaled but the car went sideways, about knocking down the wall. He kept if off but it was Densham that held it together for the win. Worsham has Densham and the Al-Anabi driver holds lane choice.

Results for Elimination Round 2
|
POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 49th annual Kragen O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals:
W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed
(W) Jim Head (Team Strange Apparel Solara) 0.054 4.095 305.98
(L) Ashley Force Hood (Castrol GTX Mustang) 0.137 4.059 308.85
11:57 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 62 degrees, relative humidity 23 percent, barometer 29.04 inches, adjusted altitude 1,538 feet, track temperature 72 degrees. No reason that we shouldn't finish this deal today. Cool and clear for the rest of Tuesday. Head remains looking looking for a driver so if you bring money... This is going to be a close deal as head got very close to the wall at the top end but pulls off a huge holeshot win over Force-Hood. The call from race control was no contact so he's good for the win. Ashley Force Hood's incremental times: 60ft-0.894 sec., 330ft-2.300, 660ft-3.273/265.38 mph. Jim Head's incremental times:
60ft-0.918 sec., 330ft-2.332, 660ft-3.302/263.36 mph.
(W) Gary Densham (RaceBricks Impala) 0.120 4.129 297.29
(L) Del Worsham (Al-Anabi Racing Solara) 0.116 4.279 21.47
Worsham has a terrible time getting the car to start but at the very last second it comes to life. A short burnout ends before the starting line and Worsham stages. This was actually close until Worsham appeared to lose a belt but it was only 0.1466 seconds (approximately 5 feet) in the lights. Head has choice over Densham in the semis. Del Worsham's incremental times: 60ft-0.907 sec., 330ft-2.328, 660ft-3.346/229.24 mph. Gary Densham's incremental times:
60ft-0.900 sec., 330ft-2.327, 660ft-3.314/258.32 mph.
(W) Robert Hight (AAA of So. Cal Mustang) 0.102 4.097 23.51
(L) Jack Beckman (Valvoline/MTS Charger) -0.071(R) 5.077 155.40
Beckman is making a habit of this. He had redlights a couple of times near the end of 2008 and he gets another here. Hight goes quick and earns his spot in the final against the winner of the next pair.
(W) Ron Capps (NAPA Auto Parts Charger) 0.112 4.088 304.80
(L) Bob Tasca III (Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustan 0.148 4.250 264.86
Final pair of Nitro funny Cars coming to the line. Capps goes quick for the round and earns choice over Hight in the other semi. Tasca's ride was eating some pistons from before half track and he just couldn't catch Capps. Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.913 sec., 330ft-2.325, 660ft-3.292/264.44 mph.

Results for Elimination Round 3
|
POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 3 eliminations in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 49th annual Kragen O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals:
W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed
(W) Jim Head (Team Strange Apparel Solara) 0.114 4.108 299.73
(L) Gary Densham (RaceBricks Impala) 0.126 9.992 87.66
2:12 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 64 degrees, relative humidity 25 percent, barometer 29.02 inches, adjusted altitude 1,712 feet, track temperature 81 degrees. We have a shot to send an underdog to the final. Both cars are blank on the sides. Densham is 4 - 2 against Head in prior events.
Densham blows the tires off right at the hit and Head is going to his first final since 1997. Jim Head's incremental times:
60ft-0.922 sec., 330ft-2.331, 660ft-3.305/261.78 mph.
(W) Ron Capps (NAPA Auto Parts Charger) 0.090 4.054 305.56
(L) Robert Hight (AAA of So. Cal Mustang) 0.111 4.084 302.62
Hight is 11 - 6 against Capps in prior events but Capps comes into this round with lane choice. This was some drag race. Capps was away first and held on to the lead to the finish. I was surprised at Capps margin of victory as he appeared to blow it up in the lights. With all of that Capps will have choice over Head. Ron Capps' incremental margins: 60ft(0.016), 330 ft(0.027), 660ft(0.040). MOV: 0.0519 seconds (approximately 23 feet).Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.903 sec., 330ft-2.318, 660ft-3.285/264.23 mph. Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.908 sec., 330ft-2.312, 660ft-3.266/268.33 mph.

Results for Final Round
|
POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4 eliminations in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 49th annual Kragen O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals:
W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed
(W) Ron Capps (NAPA Auto Parts Charger) 0.089 4.154 296.96
(L) Jim Head (Team Strange Apparel Solara) 0.141 NT-No Time
3:58 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 64 degrees, relative humidity 26 percent, barometer 29.02 inches, adjusted altitude 1,666 feet, track temperature 77 degrees. Capps is 5 - 1 against Head in prior events and this is the first time they have faced each other in a final round. Head comes to the line with a racer and no decals while the Capps ride is wall to wall. Underdogs don't have their day this time as Head strikes the tires just a few feet off the starting line. This is the second Pro Nitro win that Capps has pulled off on a Tuesday as he pulled off the same deal driving a Top Fuel Car for Roger Primm at Seattle many seasons back.
Congratulations to both teams and maybe with the round wins we might see Head a at least the next event as he's in the top 10 and gets the money to go with it.
