Results for Qualifying Round 1
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 1 - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 49th annual Kragen O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Right Lane: Ken Webster Runs 5.719/254.90, Now #1
12:25 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 66 degrees, relative humidity 42 percent, barometer 28.92 inches, adjusted altitude 2,112 feet, track temperature 82 degrees.

Nice opener for Webster as the weather continues to go down hill. The day began with cloudless skies and now it's full overcast and very threatening.

Left Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.837/244.78, Now #2
Right Lane: Leif Andreasson No Time, Now #4
Seems strange to see Bartone back in an alcohol funny after several years of nitro. He's paired against Andreasson from Sweden. This was very scary. Andreasson left with Bartone and around 330ft the marker went flying and Andreasson crossed into the lane next to Bartone. Andreasson hit the brakes and fell in behind Bartone, who did get a time.
Left Lane: Mike Drake No Time, Now #6
Right Lane: Daniel Oliver Runs 6.807/165.78, Now #3
Drake was pushed away and Oliver was on and off the throttle all the way to the finish.
Left Lane: Brian Smith Runs 5.873/248.25, Now #3
Right Lane: Rian Konno Runs 6.308/194.77, Now #4
Smith wandered the lane a bit but sill manages to move to #3. Konno left first but suffered a real lack of power.
Left Lane: Brian Thiel Runs 6.088/241.97, Now #4
Right Lane: B. Harrington Runs 7.955/80.80, Now #7
Thiel spun the tires pretty hard at the hit and lost a bunch of time. You can see from his mph that he did finally hook it up and run. Harrington had bigger problems in the other lane as he he bangs the blower and gets lots of smoke out the pipes before half track. The good news is we had no oil so the call is 'fire the next pair'!
Left Lane: Bret Williamson Runs 5.792/245.72, Now #2
Right Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 7.001/153.56, Now #8
'The Woz' has problems at the hit and winds up doing a bit of pedaling to get is seven flat. Nice looking hit for Williamson in the Team Eagle car. We appear to have some stuff on the track in Woznichak's lane. Hope we're not down long as it's getting darker and darker.
Right Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 5.818/248.84, Now #3
No muss or fuss as Bellemeur lays down a run that's straight as a string.
Left Lane: Ron August Jr Runs 5.774/254.14, Now #2
Right Lane: Dennis Taylor Runs 6.700/147.62, Now #9
Taylor rode the wall most of the way down on this pass and he was really tip toeing. Around half track things wern't getting any better and he clicked it early. August stayed right in the middle of his lane and just misses passing Webster for the top spot. Nice pass for the Div-7 team.
Left Lane: S. Gasparrelli Runs 9.104/152.68, Now #14
Right Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.633/253.61, Now #1
Gasparrelli chattered the tires hard at about 100ft and actually had smoke. He lifted and coasted across the line. Thompson goes to the top by almost a full tenth.
Left Lane: Keeter Ray Runs 10.214/82.83, Now #16
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.802/255.29, Now #5
Ray shook the tires really hard right off the line and had no choice about calling it off. Gordon had no problems on his hit.
Left Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 5.649/257.73, Now #2
Right Lane: Brian Hough Runs 8.081/114.66, Now #16
O'Bannon just misses passing Thompson for the #1 seed. Good looking run for him but tire shake and a loose race car claimed Hough.
Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.850/210.37, Now #10
Right Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.585/259.56, Now #1
Hough's 8.08 is now the bump and if my notes are correct this is the final pair. No drama here as Manzo runs and he goes to the top. Any questions? Payne gets in but it cost him a burst panel and some parts. We go on to the long cars for their first hit.

Results for Elimination Round 1
POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 49th annual Kragen O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Doug Gordon (Morro Bay Cabinets Monte Carlo 0.058 5.636 255.43
 (L) Jay Payne (Thunderslug/Valvoline Mustang) 0.055 6.111 187.52
3:38 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 61 degrees, relative humidity 47 percent, barometer 28.72 inches, adjusted altitude 2,025 feet, track temperature 71 degrees.

Gordon took the long way down and wandered around the lane for his round 1 winner in Alky Funny Car. This is Payne's 23rd Winters and he's packing early.

 (W) Tony Bartone (Centre Pointe Collision Ford 0.063 5.993 246.98
 (L) Sean Bellemeur (MasterCam/Lucis Oil Firebir -0.006(R) 6.556 159.14
Bartone is won this event in both Funny Car and Dragster. It's his 5th start on the Funnies. Bellemeur goes red and that's a rare event in it's self. Bartone was really busy but keeps the car in his own lane for the win.
 (W) Bret Williamson (Team Eagle/Beams Automotiv 0.082 10.558 78.12
 (L) Brian Smith (Crainco - Lusac Oil Camaro) 0.051 NT-Broke After Staging
Just like Payne this is Bret Williamson's 23rd Winters. Let's hope for his sake it's nicer to him. Uh oh...3:48 p.m. and it's raining again. Well, that was quick! It's 3:51 p.m. and the call from the starting line is 'Fire the next pair!' Smith barely moved off the line before there was a loud bang from the engine. Williamson got out to half track and spun the tires hard before he lifted.
 (W) Brian Thiel (BT Racing Camaro) 0.079 7.163 139.18
 (L) Ron August Jr (Lescure Corporation Mustang) 0.074 DQ-Centerline
Really ugly run for August as the car got really loose on him and crossed the stripe in front of Thiel. Thiel was having his own problems and he was well behind at the point August crossed. Darn...it's that 'R' word...again! This time the water is falling harder and the fans are fleeing the stands in massive numbers. We're on hold at 4:06 p.m. Also, I was just told that Pro Qualifying is done for the weekend. We're exactly half way through the round but the plug has been pulled for Saturday. Looks like it will be slotted in somewhere on Sunday.

 (W) Ken Webster (Synoil Fluids Racing Monte Car 0.087 5.638 257.19
 (L) Rian Konno (Lemon & Konno Racing Trans Am) 0.082 6.231 239.19
12:29 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 62 degrees, relative humidity 23 percent, barometer 29.04 inches, adjusted altitude 1,538 feet, track temperature 72 degrees.

Seems to me we were here sometime Saturday afternoon and this pair was in the water. Literally! Konno's ride spun the tires really hard at the hit and it sounded like he short shifted to get the car to hook. Webster was stuck to the lane and takes the easy win. Webster also earned lane choice over Thiel.

 (W) Dennis Taylor (Taylor Motorsports Products 0.157 5.649 242.71
 (L) Sean O'Bannon (Patron Tequila Monte Carlo) 0.043 5.768 256.26
Two Div-7 hitters square off here. Taylor gets the win but it comes with a cloud of smoke in the lights. O'Bannon got close to the wall after drilling Taylor on the starting line and appeared to lift. Taylor with choice over Williamson. Dennis Taylor's MOV: 0.0051 seconds (approximately 23 inches).

Sean O'Bannon's incremental times: 60ft-0.953 sec., 330ft-2.621, 660ft-3.855/203.16 mph, 1,000ft-4.891.
Dennis Taylor's incremental times: 60ft-0.951 sec., 330ft-2.517, 660ft-3.730/204.51 mph, 1,000ft-4.759.

 (W) Clint Thompson (Cascade Chevrolet Monte Car 0.087 13.797 74.81
 (L) Daniel Oliver (Randy Goodwin Racing Monte C -9.999(R) NT-No Show
Oliver is a no-show in Randy Goodwin's racer and Thompson simply blew the tires off on the starting. It's been tough on some of the sportsman teams to stick around this long. Gordon has choice over Thompson in round 2. I sort of wondered about Taylor's run one pair back as it appeared he hurt something as he neared the stripe. After this single by Thompson the Safari was out and cleaning the lane near the finish.
 (W) Frank Manzo (Lucas Motor Oil Monte Carlo) 0.027 5.484 263.36
 (L) Mark Woznichak (Rancho Framing/White Cap Ca 0.164 9.705 89.45
Manzo is facing the 192nd driver of his long career. Manzo wins and he will face Bartone for the first time since the final round at Maple Grove in the year 2000. Been a long time. Over all Bartone is 9-8 against Manzo. Manzo didn't just win, he destroyed the field with that 5.484. After 72 hours that wraps round 1 of Alky Funny Car.

Results for Elimination Round 2
POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 49th annual Kragen O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Tony Bartone (Centre Pointe Collision Ford 0.043 5.684 254.47
 (L) Frank Manzo (Lucas Motor Oil Monte Carlo) -0.011(R) 5.478 263.98
2:59 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 64 degrees, relative humidity 25 percent, barometer 29.02 inches, adjusted altitude 1,712 feet, track temperature 81 degrees.

Here we are five days late and going into the second round of Alcohol. Bartone is 9-8 against Manzo for his career and very few could claim to have a winning record against The Champ. Well, make that 10-8. Manzo goes red after showing a huge performance advantage. Manzo's time and speed were the 10th quickest and fastest in the history of the sport.

 (W) Doug Gordon (Morro Bay Cabinets Monte Carlo 0.057 5.511 261.88
 (L) Clint Thompson (Cascade Chevrolet Monte Car 0.085 5.615 254.18
Doug Gordon resets both ends of his personal bests as he takes out a game Thompson. Gordon was in the lead at the green and never trailed.
 (W) Ken Webster (Synoil Fluids Racing Monte Car 0.056 5.631 258.37
 (L) Brian Thiel (BT Racing Camaro) 0.049 5.798 249.35
Webster and Thiel left pretty much together but Webster pulls out his second 5.63 in a row. That gives him choice over Bartone in one semi final.
 (W) Bret Williamson (Team Eagle/Beams Automotiv 0.085 5.662 250.69
 (L) Dennis Taylor (Taylor Motorsports Products 0.137 5.675 252.71
Taylor is late and just about hands the round win to Williamson. Gordon has choice over Williamson in the semis.

Results for Elimination Round 3
POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 3 eliminations in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 49th annual Kragen O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals:

 (L) Bret Williamson (Team Eagle/Beams Automotiv 0.091 9.111 87.15
4:46 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 64 degrees, relative humidity 26 percent, barometer 29.02 inches, adjusted altitude 1,666 feet, track temperature 77 degrees.

Gordon drove through some nasty shake and actually improved over his prior round win over Thompson.

 (W) Tony Bartone (Centre Pointe Collision Ford 0.055 5.609 256.02
 (L) Ken Webster (Synoil Fluids Racing Monte Car 0.112 5.635 257.92
Bartone staged the car very carefully and it paid off when the tree came down. Webster stayed right there but Bartone just had that little bit extra to pull away for the win. Gordon will have choice over Bartone in the final by about a tenth.

Results for Final Round
POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4 eliminations in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 49th annual Kragen O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Tony Bartone (Centre Pointe Collision Ford 0.053 5.530 259.81
 (L) Doug Gordon (Morro Bay Cabinets Monte Carlo 0.036 5.618 261.83
6:12 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 58 degrees, relative humidity 36 percent, barometer 29.02 inches, adjusted altitude 1,351 feet, track temperature 59 degrees.

Getting down to the final and it feels like it's getting colder by the minute. Is this an event of destiny for Bartone after coming back from the nitro ranks? Gordon has put up some stellar, in fact Manzo like numbers. Gordon spun the tires hard at the hit and that was all it took for Bartone to take home his first Alcohol Funny Car Wally in several years. Nice runs for both racers as both reset their career best numbers for both ET and speed this week.
