Results for Qualifying Round 1
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - GAINESVILLE - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 40th annual ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Darren Nicholson Runs 5.488/260.56, Now #1
Right Lane: Dan Kracht Runs 19.475/27.68, Now #2
Kracht went up in smoke right off the line. Nice lap for Nicholson.
Left Lane: Bob Weickgenannt Runs 5.810/221.49, Now #2
Right Lane: Cherissa Griffis Runs 13.386/91.07, Now #3
Griffis lit up the big Goodyears in a huge cloud of tire smoke as soon as he hammered the throttle. Weickgenannt had to grab some "go-left" after his dragster drifted toward the centerline at the top end of the track.
Left Lane: Tom Pickett No Time, Now #6
Right Lane: Paul Fishburn Runs 5.644/255.92, Now #2
Two blown dragsters face off here - Pickett had problems after the burnout, so Fishburn will have a single.

Paul Fishburn's incremental times: 60ft-1.009 sec., 330ft-2.526, 660ft-3.733/203.80 mph, 1,000ft-4.768.
Left Lane: Jeff Veale Runs 6.697/170.19, Now #5
Right Lane: Tim Bowgren Runs 5.626/251.67, Now #2
Two nice injected nitro burnouts start things off - Veale dropped a bunch of cylinders right off the starting line. He finally lifted at about the 800-foot mark.

Bowgren's run looked better than that - his crew will have good data to tune for the next round.
Left Lane: Darryl Hitchman Runs 5.643/256.06, Now #3
Right Lane: Darvin Martinets Runs 5.735/246.66, Now #5
Hitchman dropped a couple of cylinders, but left nice black tire tracks to the halfway point.

Darryl Hitchman's incremental times: 60ft-1.004 sec., 330ft-2.554, 660ft-3.753/207.88 mph, 1,000ft-4.771.
Darvin Martinets' incremental times: 60ft-0.986 sec., 330ft-2.532, 660ft-3.763/200.44 mph, 1,000ft-4.826.
Left Lane: Dave Hirata Runs 18.217/46.51, Now #10
Right Lane: Michael Manners Runs 5.321/269.51, Now #1
Hirata did a short burnout to stay in sync in Manners who had already backed up. Manners thundered - 269.51 for speed is just .70 off his career best.. Hirata smoked the tires right at the hit, then coasted the rest of the way.
Left Lane: Bill Evans Runs 5.553/265.85, Now #4
Right Lane: Robin Samsel Runs 5.382/265.95, Now #2
Evans was a little lazy off the line - Samsel just ran his career best speed, he missed his ET record by just .007.

Robin Samsel's incremental times: 60ft-0.983 sec., 330ft-2.466, 660ft-3.591/222.66 mph, 1,000ft-4.548.
Left Lane: Dan Mercier Runs 22.787/21.13, Now #15
Right Lane: Artie Allen Runs 10.146/105.02, Now #11
Both drivers smoked the tires on the line. Allen tried to pedal, but lit up the tires again, then coasted the rest of the way. Track temp is 85 degrees btw....
Left Lane: Brandon Lewis Runs 11.558/133.29, Now #13
Right Lane: John Finke Runs 5.407/269.94, Now #3
Tire smoke claims another victim, this time it's Lewis in the left lane.
Left Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.391/270.92, Now #3
Right Lane: Arthur Gallant Runs 5.539/253.04, Now #6
Nice pass for Shields - career best speed for the Nevada based driver. Duane Shields' incremental times: 60ft-0.984 sec., 330ft-2.504, 660ft-3.624/224.14 mph, 1,000ft-4.571.
Left Lane: Marty Thacker Runs 5.657/207.08, Now #12
Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.514/267.27, Now #6
Thacker had a big puff of fire out the back of his dragster, followed by the distinct sound of a blower pushing air out the burst panel, or perhaps a hole somewhere. The whistle sound stopped when Marty crossed the finish line and slowed, we're down for a quick check of the left lane. 11:40 a.m.

 (W) Darren Nicholson (JC Autoglass/Cantrell Rac -0.223 5.433 259.51
 (L) Arthur Gallant (Arthur Gallant Racing A/FD) -9.999(R) NT-Left Before Tree
Gallant left before the tree was activated, Nicholson and the JC Autoglass Cantrell Racing team moves on to the next round.
 (W) Marty Thacker (Rapid Transit B/AD) 0.028 5.416 265.01
 (L) Dave Hirata (Schepel Auto Group A/FD) 0.070 5.626 253.52
Last year at this race Marty had an unfortunate incident with the wall. The team is hoping for a much better result this weekend. The winner of this drag race will face Allen in round two.

Hirata dropped a cylinder on each side, Thacker's run was right down broadway, and he'll have lane choice in the nex round.

 (W) Dan Kracht (Randy Meyer Racing TA/D) 0.027 5.482 254.04
 (L) Robin Samsel (Samsels/Goodson A/FD) 0.126 5.428 263.26
Kracht's first round of eliminations EVER is a notch in the win column, he did it on a holeshot, and his ET and speed are yet another career best.
 (W) Michael Manners (A/FD) 0.142 5.327 265.85
 (L) Paul Fishburn (Nightmare B/AD) 0.048 5.483 257.33
The winner will take on Kracht next round, they will need to better his 5.482 for lane choice...

Manners drove past Fishburn on the top end with the best ET of the round. Michael Manners' MOV: 0.0622 seconds (approximately 23 feet). He'll have lane choice in the next round.

 (W) Darryl Hitchman (Hitchman Racing A/FD) 0.078 5.439 267.96
 (L) John Finke (Bobcat Express TA/D) 0.070 5.468 258.67
Hitchman was unable to get his digger into reverse, the team started to slowly push Darryl back, then track officials went back and helped get him back to the starting line. The car is still running, so Darryl wnet up and staged with Finke, dropped the hammer down and WON THE ROUND! Darryl Hitchman's MOV: 0.0218 seconds (approximately 8 feet).

Hitchman will face Duane Shields in round two, Shields will have lane choice.

 (W) Bill Reichert (Bars Leak/Rislone A/FD) 0.100 5.509 265.74
 (L) Tim Bowgren (Five Star Hydraulics A/FD) 0.066 6.183 242.10
This is the 26th time Bill Reichert has qualified number one... (Thanks Bob Frey!)

Reichert run was way off his qualifying effort, but Bowgren's was even slower. Reichert will Darren Nicholson in round two and Nicholson will have lane choice. 5:47 p.m.

Results for Elimination Round 2
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 40th annual ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Duane Shields (Shortline Express A/FD) 0.081 5.361 268.38
 (L) Darryl Hitchman (Hitchman Racing A/FD) 0.147 5.853 191.24
12:35 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 79 degrees, relative humidity 49 percent, barometer 29.90 inches, adjusted altitude 1,970 feet, track temperature 108 degrees.

Once again Hitchman can't get his dragster in reverse after the burnout and had to be pushed back to the starting line. Shields waited for him, then drove away to the semi final round. Hitchman dropped a cylinder right off the line and was never a factor.

Hitchman also left some stuff on the track, so we're down for our first cleanup of he day. It's not very large, so it should only take a couple of minutes.

 (W) Michael Manners (A/FD) 0.126 5.273 269.73
 (L) Dan Kracht (Randy Meyer Racing TA/D) 0.043 5.405 262.49
Kracht will likely need a career best pass to get past Manners...

Kracht give it his best shot - another career best (3rd or 4th time this weekend he's done that) and a huge starting line advantage, but Manners hooked up the big Goodyears and was able to drive by at the halfway point. Michael Manners' MOV: 0.0494 seconds (approximately 19 feet).

 (W) Artie Allen (Allen Racing A/FD) 0.043 5.333 257.04
 (L) Marty Thacker (Rapid Transit B/AD) 0.038 5.424 263.05
Allen ends Thacker's day with a clean pass right down the groove. Artie Allen's MOV: 0.0867 seconds (approximately 33 feet). Allen will race Shields in the next round, and Allen will have lane choice.
 (W) Bill Reichert (Bars Leak/Rislone A/FD) 0.084 5.311 271.84
 (L) Darren Nicholson (JC Autoglass/Cantrell Rac 0.119 13.931 40.72
Bill Reichert qualified #1 for the 27th time this weekend, putting him in a tie with the late Blaine Johnson for the all time lead. Nicholson is driving for Cliff Bozzelli this weekend, evidently Bozzelli was injured at home recently.

This was all Reichert, Nicholson had problems early and came to a stop just past the finish line. Nicholson was the last blown dragster in the field, so it will be all nitro in the semi final round. Reichert will race Manners in the Semis and Manners (who ran low ET of the round) will have lane choice. 12:49 p.m.

This is Shields first Gainesville appearance. Duane made the long drive from Nevada worth the trip. Reichert lit up the tires right off the lane, and could only watch Shields take the win, the trophy and the prize money in the left lane.
