Results for Qualifying Round 1
BAYTOWN, Texas - HOUSTON - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 22nd annual O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Right Lane: Todd Simpson Runs 4.532/246.75, Now #1
5:00 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 76 percent, barometer 29.44 inches, adjusted altitude 2,741 feet, track temperature 94 degrees.

As far as we can tell, this is Simpson's first pass in NHRA competition. The car labored a bit, but made it to the line under power.

Left Lane: Troy Buff Runs 4.057/271.57, Now #1
Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 4.062/291.57, Now #2
A body panel came loose on Buff's car on the burnout, but a crew member cooly put it back on and buttoned it up - it stayed put on the run.

Two good opening runs, clean and straight. No records, but also no problems.

Left Lane: Urs Erbacher Runs 4.109/287.05, Now #4
Right Lane: David Baca Runs 4.032/302.14, Now #1
Two more nice runs. Baca moves to the top of the list.
Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.034/301.60, Now #2
Right Lane: Del Cox Jr Runs 4.474/214.62, Now #6
Another nice opening run, this one by Millican. Cox shook and pedaled about 200 feet out.
Left Lane: Joe Hartley Runs 4.397/250.64, Now #7
Right Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 3.920/303.43, Now #1
Hartley dropped a cylinder on the left side at the hit, then the engine erupted in a big fireball before half track. Meanwhile, Massey made our first three-second run of the day on a nice run.

The equipment rolls to clean up our first major oildown of the weekend, so we'll be down for a few minutes.

Left Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 3.920/310.98, Now #1
Right Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 8.336/74.72, Now #11
5:19 p.m. Let's try this again.

Teammates! Lucas rattled the tires and shut off quickly. Langdon made a nice run, matching Massey's time, beating his speed, moving everyone down a spot.

Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 3.905/313.00, Now #1
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 6.254/97.20, Now #12

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 7.767/80.02, Now #14
Right Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 5.060/138.56, Now #12
Dixon had the car to beat at Vegas - until a broken throttle cable ended his weekend early - then won at Gainesville.

Both cars shook and lost traction, Kalitta first, then Dixon.

Left Lane: B. Bernstein Runs 4.079/286.98, Now #9
Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 3.912/305.63, Now #2
Something was getting very hot at the front of Bernstein's engine as he got close to the finish line, but it never turned into a flamer. Nice run by Brown, but he could not match Cory Mac's pace and slid into the second spot.

After one session, it's Cory Mac #1 at 3.905 seconds and Del Cox Jr is on the bump spot at 4.474.

Results for Qualifying Round 2
BAYTOWN, Texas - HOUSTON - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 22nd annual O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 4.052/289.26, Now #7
                                  No Prior Run

                                  No Prior Run
12:34 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 54 degrees, relative humidity 39 percent, barometer 29.79 inches, adjusted altitude 184 feet, track temperature 89 degrees.

Since the provisional field was only 12 cars, there won't be a 16-car bump until a couple pairs have run.

Kalitta started hazing the tires at half track, Lucas started mixing the cylinders up at about the same point.

Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 4.058/274.16, Now #10
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Joe Hartley Runs 3.972/305.56, Now #5
Best prior run: 4.397/250.64, Was #11
With only seventeen cars here, somebody is going home tonight.

Schumacher pedaled it a couple times, once early and once in the middle of the run - good job of driving to save the run. Hartley was a little slower early in the run, but had no visible problems.

Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 3.882/310.41, Now #1
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Urs Erbacher Runs 11.874/59.31, Now #14
Best prior run: 4.109/287.05, Was #10
Dixon made the best run of the weekend (so far). Erbacher was up in smoke immediately.
Left Lane: Todd Simpson Runs 4.311/266.11, Now #15
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: B. Bernstein Runs 3.841/316.23, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.079/286.98, Was #13
Simpson left a lot at the starting line with a 0.914 60-foot time, but made another full pass. Bernstein also made a full pass, but was quick at all the timers. Brandon Bernstein's incremental times: 60ft-0.852 sec., 330ft-2.159, 660ft-3.074/279.04 mph.
Left Lane: Del Cox Jr Runs 4.166/285.95, Now #15
Best prior run: 4.474/214.62, Was #16
Right Lane: Troy Buff Runs 4.229/200.95, Now #11
Best prior run: 4.057/271.57, Was #11
Both runs looked okay, but Cox also left a lot of time back in the early part of the run. Buff was on a good pass early, the car falling off the pace on the top end.
Left Lane: David Baca Runs 4.063/299.86, Now #9
Best prior run: 4.032/302.14, Was #8
Right Lane: Clay Millican Runs 3.937/301.20, Now #7
Best prior run: 4.034/301.60, Was #9
Two more runs that looked better than the numbers, both cars moving around on the top end, where a strong crosswind is blowing from left to right. Millican was going 270 mph at 660 feet, should have been faster than 301 at the finish.
Left Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 4.633/136.86, Now #6
Best prior run: 3.920/303.43, Was #6
Right Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 3.898/308.07, Now #3
Best prior run: 3.920/310.98, Was #5
Massey's car struck the tires before half track and may have popped the supercharger, the chutes out way before the line. Very nice run by Langdon, just a couple hundredths slower than his career-best.
Left Lane: Antron Brown Runs 3.819/316.75, Now #1
Best prior run: 3.912/305.63, Was #5
Right Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 3.889/311.05, Now #4
Best prior run: 3.905/313.00, Was #4
Cory Mac unveiled his new Fram Tough Guard colors for this run, the car now sporting flames over the front of the car.

Nice side-by-side show for the capacity Saturday afternoon crowd and the 2008 Houston winner moved to the front of the class, posting top speed of the weekend as well.

Antron Brown's incremental times: 60ft-0.842 sec., 330ft-2.146, 660ft-3.052/280.08 mph.
Cory McClenathan's incremental times: 60ft-0.855 sec., 330ft-2.181, 660ft-3.107/273.66 mph.

With one session left, Brown is #1 and Todd Simpson is on the bump spot at 4.311.

Results for Qualifying Round 3
BAYTOWN, Texas - HOUSTON - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 22nd annual O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Right Lane: Todd Simpson No Time, Now #16
Best prior run: 4.311/266.11, Was #16
4:20 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 68 degrees, relative humidity 36 percent, barometer 29.75 inches, adjusted altitude 1,217 feet, track temperature 101 degrees.

Somebody won't get to play tomorrow and right now Doug Kalitta is the odd man out. Simpson's bump time, however, is very vulnerable and he had to make this last run without knowing whether he needed to improve or could stand pat since the lane rotation put him in the nine-car list for this session.

Simpson had problems getting into reverse and had to be pushed back - but had plenty of time since the other lane was empty. However, apparently the engine was too warm to chance a run and they shut it off. Now he has to sit and watch to see what Kalitta can do.

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.425/215.86, Now #17
Best prior run: 4.619/166.81, Was #17
Right Lane: Del Cox Jr Runs 4.022/300.06, Now #9
Best prior run: 4.166/285.95, Was #15
Kalitta did all he could do, pedaling to try to get the tires hooked back up when they started smoking in the middle of the run, but he came up short and he will not be in the show tomorrow. Meanwhile, Cox trimmed a tenth off his prior best and moved up six rungs on the ladder.
Left Lane: Urs Erbacher Runs 3.922/307.16, Now #8
Best prior run: 4.109/287.05, Was #15
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 3.868/313.00, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.058/274.16, Was #13
Two solid runs, putting both in the top half of the field, though Erbacher will have to sit through the next few pairs to see if he stays there.
Left Lane: Troy Buff Runs 3.997/288.52, Now #12
Best prior run: 4.057/271.57, Was #14
Right Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 3.881/305.77, Now #4
Best prior run: 4.052/289.26, Was #13
Two more improvements, but Buff's car was spinning the tires on the top end and he got very sideways when the chutes came out.
Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 3.871/313.80, Now #4
Best prior run: 3.937/301.20, Was #10
Right Lane: David Baca Runs 3.935/310.55, Now #11
Best prior run: 4.032/302.14, Was #14
Two nice-looking runs, Millican moving all the way up to the fourth spot in the order. Baca losy most of the difference in the first 300 feet, then paced Millican the rest of the way.
Left Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 3.886/295.72, Now #8
Best prior run: 3.898/308.07, Was #8
Right Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 3.877/310.13, Now #5
Best prior run: 3.920/303.43, Was #9
Two of the promising Top Fuel rookies were paired up here and they were locked together all the way down the track.
Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 3.904/307.86, Now #9
Best prior run: 3.889/311.05, Was #9
Right Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 5.390/120.87, Now #7
Best prior run: 3.882/310.41, Was #7
This was disappointing - Dixon was up in smoke in the first 300 feet and Cory Mac failing to improve, staying in the bottom half of the field after holding down the #1 spot Friday.
Left Lane: B. Bernstein Runs 3.874/314.90, Now #2
Best prior run: 3.841/316.23, Was #2
Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 3.875/311.92, Now #1
Best prior run: 3.819/316.75, Was #1
Last pair and they will be the #1 and #2 qualifiers (though they could swap positions).

Nice runs, the two cars side-by-side all the way, but Tony Schumacher was quickest of the final qualifying session.

Cory Mac win here in '98 in Top Fuel and has been runner-up three times, twice in Top Fuel, once in Top Alcohol Dragster (1990). McClenathan is 1 - 0 against Langdon in prior events. Langdon is the 2008 Super Comp champion, making his fourth start in Top Fuel.

Langdon was up in smoke immediately and McClenathan was unchallenged, making his best run of the weekend.

 (W) Larry Dixon (Al-Anabi Racing Dragster) 0.093 3.856 313.44
 (L) Urs Erbacher (Century Asphalt Materials Dra 0.064 4.072 224.85
This is the first time Dixon and European champion Erbacher have faced each other in eliminations. Dixon won this event in '00, was runner-up in '01 and last year.

This one will make the highlight reel - with several replays from different angles. Dixon trailed to 660 feet, pulling even with Erbacher at that point. Then Erbacher's engine exploded in a huge ball of flame and shrapnel. The engine explosion took out the left rear tire, which took the left end off the wing. The car bounced hard several times, but Erbacher did a very good job of keeping the car in his lane and bringing it to a stop. The engine explosion rivaled Doug Herbert's massive explosion at the starting line at Pomona several years ago.

On the replay, there were a couple puffs from the headers just before the top of the engine disappeared, the supercharger completely missing after the fireball died down.

Larry Dixon's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.032), 330 ft(-0.022), 660ft(0.000). MOV: 0.1875 seconds (approximately 62 feet). Dixon also improved over his qualifying effort

 (W) Clay Millican (MPE Motorsportd Dragster) 0.068 3.893 307.23
 (L) Troy Buff (Bill Miller Racing/Okuma Dragste 0.098 5.893 103.52
11:54 a.m. There was huge oil slick to deal with once Erbacher's car was removed and the debris field was cleaned up, so there was a lengthy delay.

This is the first time Millican and Buff have faced each other in eliminations.

Millican was away first, then Buff's car started hazing the tires and the race was over.

 (W) Antron Brown (Matco Tools Dragster) 0.097 3.840 313.88
 (L) Todd Simpson (Dragster) -9.999(R) NT-Broke Before Staging
Brown was runner-up here in '04 and won here last year.

Simpson made the burnout, then shut it off. Probably didn't matter, Brown ran almost as well as he did in qualifying and would have been tough to beat. He has lane choice over Cory Mac in the quarterfinals.

 (W) Brandon Bernstein (Budweiser/Lucas Oil Drag 0.081 3.887 315.49
 (L) Terry Haddock (Dragster) 0.111 3.958 304.05
This is the first time Bernstein and Haddock have faced each other in eliminations. Bernstein has two wins here, in '04 and '06.

Haddock made a Top Fuel career-best run, but Bernstein was "running on mean" and won by over a car length. However, he lost lane choice to Dixon for their second-round matchup.

 (W) Tony Schumacher (U.S. Army Dragster) 0.124 3.897 308.78
 (L) Del Cox Jr (LA King's/RG Industries DRA Dra 0.090 3.974 300.80
Schumacher comes in riding a 29-race first-round win streak. He won this event in '05 and has been runner-up three times. Cox is in his fourth career event and has faced Schumacher three times in the first round, so two of the wins in Schumacher's streak came at his expense.

Make it 30, tying Larry Dixon's record for consecutive Top Fuel first-round wins, but Schumacher had to come from behind to get this one. Cox grabbed the early lead and ran better than he qualified, but Schumacher ran him down in the first 330 feet, then pulled away.

 (W) Morgan Lucas (Geico Powersport/ Lucas Oil D 0.068 4.636 220.69
 (L) David Baca (Mach 1/Global Services Dragster 0.105 6.799 88.03
Baca and Lucas have each won 2 times against the other in prior events. Lucas is 2-1 in first-rounds.

This one was a pedal-fest in both lanes, Lucas starting to pedal first, but getting it hooked up better. He led all the way and Baca wasn't in the picture at the finish. Lucas advances, but loses lane choice to Schumacher in round two.

 (W) Joe Hartley (Hartley Racing Dragster) 0.101 4.004 303.43
 (L) Spencer Massey (US Smokeless Dragster) 0.061 5.274 138.37
This is the first time Massey and Hartley have faced each other in eliminations. Hartley was runner-up here in '07 and his father was a runner-up here in Top Alcohol Dragster.

Massey got a holeshot (of course) but started smoking the tires about 300 feet out and Hartley advanced to face Millican in the quarterfinals. Millican will have lane choice.

BAYTOWN, Texas - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Top Fuel at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 22nd annual O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Tony Schumacher (U.S. Army Dragster) 0.078 4.434 230.37
 (L) Morgan Lucas (Geico Powersport/ Lucas Oil D 0.106 4.434 230.37
2:11 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 68 degrees, relative humidity 31 percent, barometer 29.97 inches, adjusted altitude 897 feet, track temperature 112 degrees.

Conditions are still excellent, except for the track temperature, which is getting a bit out of the "comfort zone."

Schumacher is 17 - 4 against Lucas in prior events, 7-2 in round 2 matchups.

These two runs were as close to identical as possible - Identical Ets and speeds in both lanes. The difference was all in the reaction times and Schumacher won in that category. Both cars started hazing the tries at almost the same instant, and they pedaled in synchronization. Tony Schumacher's incremental margins: 60ft(0.034), 330 ft(0.036), 660ft(0.035). MOV: 0.0284 seconds (approximately 10 feet).

 (W) Joe Hartley (Hartley Racing Dragster) 0.101 4.083 294.31
 (L) Clay Millican (MPE Motorsportd Dragster) 0.087 5.142 152.07
This is the first time Millican and Hartley have faced each other in eliminations.

"Slow and steady does it every time..." Millican had the early lead and Hartley lost a cylinder early in the run. Then Millican started smoking the tires and pedaled, unsuccessfully, while Hartley chugged on through for the win.

 (W) Larry Dixon (Al-Anabi Racing Dragster) 0.076 4.400 248.43
 (L) Brandon Bernstein (Budweiser/Lucas Oil Drag 0.053 5.072 165.17
Bernstein is 16 - 9 against Dixon in prior events, 8-5 in round two.

Another pedaling contest, Bernstein losing traction first. Dixon had the momentum advantage and got the win, Bernstein's car getting very sideways a couple times. Dixon will have lane choice against Schumacher in the semifinals.

 (W) Cory McClenathan (Fram Dragster) 0.022 3.909 303.23
 (L) Antron Brown (Matco Tools Dragster) 0.077 3.883 310.63
Brown is 5 - 2 against McClenathan in prior events, 2-1 in the second round.

Both teams had the tricky track sorted out and Cory Mac took this one on a holeshot. McClenathan had an awesome light and held on for the win by less than a car length. Cory McClenathan's incremental margins: 60ft(0.054), 330 ft(0.050), 660ft(0.040). MOV: 0.0291 seconds (approximately 13 feet). He will have lane choice against Hartley in the semifinals.

Cinderella's slipper just shattered, Hartley was up in smoke in the first 100 feet. Cory Mac made a clean run, but lost lane choice to Schumacher for their final round match.

Results for Final Round
BAYTOWN, Texas - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4 eliminations in Top Fuel at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 22nd annual O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Tony Schumacher (U.S. Army Dragster) 0.059 3.881 314.75
 (L) Cory McClenathan (Fram Dragster) 0.098 3.880 313.66
5:36 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 71 degrees, relative humidity 31 percent, barometer 29.91 inches, adjusted altitude 1,185 feet, track temperature 103 degrees.

This is the sixth time these two have faced off in a final round. Schumacher holds a 3-2 edge, with two of those wins coming as teamates, last year. Schumacher also won their only prior Houston final round, in '05. Cory Mac has been in three prior finals here, winning in '98. Schumacher has been in four prior finals here, his only win being in the '05 faceoff with McClenathan.

On a holeshot, Schumacher makes it three-for-three against his teammate in final rounds and two-for-two against his teammate here. That's also the 125th win for Team Schumacher and a wrapup for this event.
