JOLIET, Ill. - CHICAGO - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 12th annual United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Rick Cortino Runs 8.212/114.96, Now #1
12:43 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 38 percent, barometer 29.23 inches, adjusted altitude 2,353 feet, track temperature 109 degrees.Cortino shook, then slowed around half track.
Left Lane: Wayne Butler No Time, Now #3
Right Lane: John Bojec Runs 17.686/41.97, Now #2
Butler made a monster burnout, then apparently didn't have any brakes, coasting past the finish line, then taking the first turnoff as the smoke cleared. Bojec backed up and staged okay, then smoked the tires and shut off at the green.
Left Lane: Jeff Burnett Runs 5.721/241.50, Now #1
Right Lane: Kevin Newburgh Runs 6.077/237.46, Now #2
Good nopening pass for Burnett, no obvious problems. newburgh shook and pedaled early then finished the run with no other obvious problems.
Left Lane: Fred Hagen Jr. Runs 5.952/226.96, Now #2
Right Lane: Marc White Runs 6.513/140.08, Now #4
hagen shook and pedaled early. White was well ahead, then there was a loud POP and the chutes came out, sounded like a burst panel letting go.
Left Lane: Bobby Martin Runs 5.826/253.09, Now #3
Right Lane: Andy Bohl Runs 5.660/255.73, Now #1
Bohl made a nice-looking run to move to the top of the list. Martin's run looked okay, but his early numbers were well behind Bohl's, losing a tenth by the 330-foot marker.
Left Lane: Chris Foster Runs 5.884/249.16, Now #5
Right Lane: Vern Moats Runs 5.637/258.12, Now #1
Nice pass by Moats to replace Bohl atop the list (but there are several more "heavy hitters" still left in line). Vern Moats'
incremental times: 60ft-0.981 sec., 330ft-2.519, 660ft-3.733/204.17 mph, 1,000ft-4.765.
Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.936/202.00, Now #7
Right Lane: Mark Billington Runs 5.851/247.38, Now #5 Billington's car was reluctant to fire, but his crew finally coaxed it to life without delaying Gordon.Gordon was pulling away, on a good pace, but there was a loud BANG and pieces of bodywork went flying through the air past half track and he slowed.
Doug Gordon's incremental times: 60ft-0.949 sec., 330ft-2.543, 660ft-3.782/201.88 mph, 1,000ft-4.874.
Left Lane: Mick Snyder Runs 5.643/255.39, Now #3
Right Lane: Roger Bateman Runs 5.566/256.31, Now #1
These two are capable of running in the five-fifties...and Bateman did just that to take over the top spot. Snyder made a nice pass, but steadily lost ground to bateman at every timing increment. Mick Snyder's incremental times: 60ft-0.948 sec., 330ft-2.508,
660ft-3.726/203.19 mph, 1,000ft-4.764. Roger Bateman's incremental times: 60ft-0.937 sec., 330ft-2.460, 660ft-3.660/205.29 mph, 1,000ft-4.689.
Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.580/258.37, Now #2
Right Lane: Steve Harker Runs 5.610/250.64, Now #3
Two more five-fifty hitters...and a great side-by-side race, locked together until there was a POP from Harker's car as he neared the lights. Jay Payne's incremental times: 60ft-0.946 sec., 330ft-2.484, 660ft-3.685/206.10 mph, 1,000ft-4.709. Steve Harker's incremental times: 60ft-0.954 sec., 330ft-2.485, 660ft-3.684/205.79 mph, 1,000ft-4.718.
Left Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.587/261.07, Now #3
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.644/246.53, Now #7
These two have been the class of the TAFC ranks so far this year - but not unbeatable. Bartone returned this season and picked up his classic battle with Manzo right where he left off when he went fuel racing.Bartone's car was trailing light smoke on the top end and Manzo could not quite match either Bateman or Payne, falling into third spot in the order. Frank Manzo's incremental
times: 60ft-0.959 sec., 330ft-2.504, 660ft-3.703/207.30 mph, 1,000ft-4.724. Tony Bartone's incremental times: 60ft-0.971 sec., 330ft-2.490, 660ft-3.692/204.48 mph, 1,000ft-4.736. After one of three qualifying sessions, Bateman leads the field at 5.566 and Marc White is on the bump spot at 6.513.

4:57 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 77 degrees, relative humidity 36 percent, barometer 29.17 inches, adjusted altitude 2,544 feet, track temperature 98 degrees. Marc White is on the bump spot at 6.513. Bojec launched, started rattling the tires, and had the chutes out early. He still made into the field, for now, anyway. Now Kevin Newburgh is on the bump spot at 6.077.
Left Lane: Rick Cortino Runs 6.360/222.69, Now #17
Best prior run: 8.212/114.96, Was #18

Best prior run: 5.936/202.00, Was #16 Newburgh shook and missed the cut. Gordon once again popped the burst panel, this time before half track - and it looks like his car has the burst panel chute trigger required on the fuel cars. From the gaggle of people and equipment on the track, near the finish line, it looks like Gordon popped more than just a burst panel this time.
Left Lane: Mark Billington Runs 5.740/252.38, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.851/247.38, Was #13
Right Lane: Chris Foster Runs 5.692/254.90, Now #11
