Results for Qualifying Round 3
|
KENT, Wash. - SEATTLE - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 22nd annual NHRA Northwest Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Dave Germain Runs 6.324/242.28, Now #17
Best prior run: 8.882/232.19, Was #19
2:06 p.m. We have nineteen cars in this class so three are not going to play in eliminations. Germain spun the tires hard at the hit and then drove through it. The engine went bang in the lights and sent the burst panel high into the afternoon skies. BTW, Roger Bateman is on the bump with a 5.984 time. Nothing on the track so the call is 'Fire the next pair!'
Left Lane: Jason Rupert Runs 6.036/242.98, Now #16
Best prior run: 5.859/246.75, Was #15
Right Lane: Tim Nemeth Runs 5.812/247.16, Now #15
Best prior run: 8.082/110.86, Was #19 Nemeth will try to bump in and Rupert will try to get away from it. Nemeth does his job and pedals his way into the show.
Rupert has to pedal and he winds up...on the bump with one car left that can put his out. Bateman is bumped but in line to requalify.
Left Lane: Jeff Ashwell Runs 5.859/226.32, Now #14
Best prior run: 5.783/243.99, Was #14
Right Lane: Jim Peters Runs 5.919/235.68, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.428/240.77, Was #19 Peters and Bateman both have shots to get back in so let's see how this goes. Peters just misses so he's eliminated from the qualifying program. Ashwell repeats and remains #14.
Left Lane: Ken Webster Runs 19.427/33.93, Now #14
Best prior run: 5.768/255.92, Was #13
Right Lane: Roger Bateman Runs 5.696/253.75, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.984/238.85, Was #18 It's put up time for Bateman, a top ten player from 2008. Bateman does it with ease and Rupert gets bumped out of the show for the final time this weekend. Webster had problems early in the run and the Safari has to go out and drag him off the top end.
Left Lane: Keeter Ray Runs 5.655/250.83, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.745/250.92, Was #13
Right Lane: Dennis Taylor Runs 5.904/193.96, Now #12

Left Lane: John Evanchuk Runs 5.700/250.09, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.744/249.81, Was #13
Right Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 8.440/104.93, Now #12
Best prior run: 5.741/250.41, Was #11 Evanchuk makes his best his of the weekend and he moves up to #10. Bellemeur has the tires turn square and he shakes pretty hard.
Left Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 7.253/134.24, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.705/253.90, Was #11
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.630/256.36, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.690/255.77, Was #8 Doug Gordon goes quick for the weekend and takes over the top spot here in the final stages of qualifying. Thompson rattles the tires hard and winds up coasting most of the length of the track.
Left Lane: S. Gasparrelli Runs 6.573/160.48, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.669/255.63, Was #7
Right Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.699/253.71, Now #5

Left Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 5.648/256.80, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.665/256.36, Was #6
Right Lane: J. Lombardo Jr. Runs 5.619/256.06, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.641/248.84, Was #3 Lombardo must have liked that top spot as he moves right back to to the top of the heap in Alcohol Funny Car. He moves Gordon down to #2 and will watch the final few cars. O'Bannon was close but no cigar.
Left Lane: Brian Thiel Runs 5.705/251.30, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.689/248.98, Was #8
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.610/258.67, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.638/256.36, Was #3 Payne saved the best for last as he takes his Fire and Ice/Valvoline car right back to the #1 spot in the field. This has been a fairly exciting final session with three different folks taking turns at the top of the ladder. Thiel had good numbers but just not enough for the top spot in the show.
