Results for Qualifying Round 1
SONOMA, Calif. - SONOMA - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 22nd annual FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 4.437/269.67, Now #2
Right Lane: Brian Thiel Runs 4.248/290.76, Now #1
Weather conditions: air temperature 71 degrees, relative humidity 49 percent, barometer 29.88 inches, adjusted altitude 1,412 feet, track temperature 114 degrees.

Opening up is Jeff 'The Surfer' Diehl and Brian Thiel. Pretty good opener with both drivers making full passes and clean at that!

Left Lane: Grant Downing Runs 5.205/143.37, Now #4
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.903/159.78, Now #3
Both cars left like they were welded together and both gave up the ghost at about 800ft. Both coasted across the 1000ft and will return later this evening.
Left Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 5.091/136.70, Now #4
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 5.838/112.07, Now #6
Toliver might have lost a burst panel as the chutes were out early in the run. Arend appeared to have decent early numbers but he started hazing the tires pretty hard at about 330ft and wound up clicking it off early. Jeff Arend's incremental times: 60ft-0.925 sec., 330ft-2.434. Jerry Toliver's incremental times: 60ft-0.944 sec., 330ft-2.439.
Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.184/290.38, Now #1
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 7.251/89.82, Now #8
Hight takes the Auto Club Ford right to the top of the heap. Between 60ft and 330ft C.Pedregon has the tires turn square on his Advance Auto Solara and he had to shut off and coast on out. Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.894 sec., 330ft-2.336, 660ft-3.351/252.14 mph.
Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.213/287.78, Now #2
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 6.825/91.11, Now #9
Neff has the same problem as Cruz and at about the same spot. Pretty good leave but after 60ft the tires started shaking and he stepped off. Hagan gets a full pull but can't quite catch Hight for the top spot.
Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.303/265.17, Now #5
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.262/279.04, Now #4
Nice side by side qualifier. John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.911 sec., 330ft-2.373, 660ft-3.401/243.85 mph.
Bob Tasca III's incremental times: 60ft-0.910 sec., 330ft-2.375, 660ft-3.402/247.84 mph.
Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.248/287.53, Now #4
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.251/288.70, Now #5
Another pair that puts on a great show for the huge Friday crowd here at Infineon. Del Worsham's incremental times: 60ft-0.911 sec., 330ft-2.369, 660ft-3.400/247.02 mph.
Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.929 sec., 330ft-2.388, 660ft-3.407/251.86 mph.
Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.280/281.25, Now #8
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.201/281.95, Now #2
What a show the Funny Car guys are putting on. These two were flawless. Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.913 sec., 330ft-2.385, 660ft-3.418/244.65 mph.
Tony Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.882 sec., 330ft-2.317, 660ft-3.340/252.14 mph.
Left Lane: A. Force Hood Runs 4.206/289.38, Now #3
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.215/288.95, Now #5
It ends just the way it started with two nitro Funny Cars side by side and decent numbers being thrown up on the scoreboards. Ashley Force Hood's incremental times: 60ft-0.894 sec., 330ft-2.347, 660ft-3.367/250.64 mph.
Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.911 sec., 330ft-2.356, 660ft-3.374/250.51 mph.

Results for Qualifying Round 2
SONOMA, Calif. - SONOMA - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 22nd annual FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 16.523/76.61, Now #18
Best prior run: 7.251/89.82, Was #18
Right Lane: Grant Downing Runs 13.008/73.04, Now #15
Best prior run: 5.205/143.37, Was #15
7:46 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 60 degrees, relative humidity 68 percent, barometer 29.89 inches, adjusted altitude 709 feet.

We open with the cars that met with misfortune in the first round and they pay the penalty by being the first cars out in perhaps the best session of the weekend. The wind continues to blow right into the drivers faces and the temperature is falling like a rock. Instant tire smoke greets the pair and both go into Saturday not qualified.

Left Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.069/305.42, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.825/91.11, Was #17
Right Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 4.248/296.37, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.091/136.70, Was #14
Both Neff and Toliver lost traction in the first session and this could be tricky with the temperature falling the way it is. WOW! Neff lays down the best run we've seen in awhile and that was with the engine eating it's self just a bit from about 900ft to the stripe. Toliver looked slow because of Neff but he goes into the show at #7 for the moment. That first pair might just have been a fluke.
Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.202/294.37, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.838/112.07, Was #17
Right Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 4.748/191.57, Now #15
Best prior run: 4.437/269.67, Was #14
Pretty good looking pass for Arend that will put him well into the show at #4. Diehl was with Arend until about half track at which point the engine flames looked weird and then went out.
Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.164/293.41, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.903/159.78, Was #16
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.138/298.40, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.303/265.17, Was #14
Two old friends meet here in the second round of qualifying. That was an absolute barn burner as the two were just welded right from the hit. Force goes into the #2 spot and Densham is #3 with a bunch of good cars to come.
Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.133/300.13, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.262/279.04, Was #14
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.133/292.33, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.280/281.25, Was #15
You can't get much closer than this pair. Identical ETs mean that mph becomes the deciding factor between the #2 and #3 spots in the show. Beckman might have shutoff just a taste early as the flames went down just before the stripe.
Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.129/300.00, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.251/288.70, Was #15
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.136/302.48, Now #5
Best prior run: 4.248/287.53, Was #14
This just keeps getting better and better. Wilkerson moves everyone except Neff down a spot in the show and just misses Neff's 4.06. Worsham takes the Al-Anabi Racing Funny Car to the top half at #5.
Left Lane: Brian Thiel Runs 8.562/72.46, Now #15
Best prior run: 4.248/290.76, Was #15
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.068/307.51, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.213/287.78, Was #12
Hagan just goes out and runs low ET and Top Speed of the event, as well as setting his new career best at 1000ft. Thiel was right there but at around 330ft he hazed the tires and clicked it off right then and there. Nice pass for Hagan.
Left Lane: Ron Capps No Time, Now #13
Best prior run: 4.215/288.95, Was #13
Right Lane: A. Force Hood Runs 4.099/304.67, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.206/289.38, Was #12
Capps clinched a spot in the Countdown on his last pass and that's good because he's pushed away from the line as the car won't start. Force-Hood singles to the #3 spot in the show. Bad luck luck for Capps as he's not in the qualified field going into Saturday.
Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 6.537/94.43, Now #11
Best prior run: 4.201/281.95, Was #11
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.191/275.28, Now #10
Best prior run: 4.184/290.38, Was #10
Hight was on a good one but the fuse was cut a bit short and the engine came apart at about 900ft. There was a pretty good fire that the bottles took care of right away but the Safari is about to come out and earn their keep. Pedregon was never really in this one as his Goodyears came loose around 300ft into his run. Both are in the field but neither move up in the magic session.

Left Lane: Grant Downing Runs 4.794/175.02, Now #14
                                  No Prior Run

                                  No Prior Run
1:28 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 71 degrees, relative humidity 53 percent, barometer 29.93 inches, adjusted altitude 1,416 feet.

Both drivers are on and off the pedal from start to finish as we begin filling in the field from the provisionals on back.

Left Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 4.379/285.95, Now #13
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.709/187.39, Now #14
                                  No Prior Run
Diehl moves Capps down another spot as he comes into the show at #13. Cruz appeared to be on a nice pass until the car fell silent at about 800ft.
Left Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 6.883/104.03, Now #18
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Brian Thiel Runs 4.186/293.98, Now #11
                                  No Prior Run
Thiel gets into the field on his third hit and just might be solid enough to stick. Toliver was loose and we forced to shut down early. Eighteen cars this weekend so two will watch.
Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 5.813/118.41, Now #11
Best prior run: 4.184/290.38, Was #10
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.176/288.21, Now #10
Best prior run: 4.201/281.95, Was #12
Hight had good early numbers but rattled the tires loose at the 330ft marker.
Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.196/292.65, Now #8
Best prior run: 4.138/298.40, Was #8
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 5.401/132.95, Now #13
Best prior run: 4.202/294.37, Was #13
Force doesn't improve but Coil seems to have a handle on the Mustang this weekend. Arend joined the spin the tires club and clicked it early.
Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.254/276.41, Now #7
Best prior run: 4.136/302.48, Was #7
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.231/292.27, Now #9
Best prior run: 4.164/293.41, Was #9
Two good side by side runs from this pair. Densham got really close to the wall after the finish and he actually kicked up some dust. According to Gary the car started vibrating and he 'lost all vision' down there. Both drivers stay in the same qualifying positions.
Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.192/290.51, Now #6
Best prior run: 4.133/292.33, Was #6
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.169/298.07, Now #5
Best prior run: 4.133/300.13, Was #5
Tasca cards the quickest run of the session but remains #5. Beckman was right there with Tasca and he remains the #6 qualifier.
Left Lane: A. Force Hood Runs 4.791/168.18, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.099/304.67, Was #3
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 5.636/124.06, Now #4
Best prior run: 4.129/300.00, Was #4
Both crew chiefs get just a little over center in this pair. Both began hazing the tires at or around 330ft. They remain #3 and #4 on the qualifying list. Not certain we'll see 4.0s with the current weather conditions.
Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.236/293.47, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.068/307.51, Was #1
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.172/295.14, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.069/305.42, Was #2
These teams are getting this down to a science. Another side by side pair brings the huge Infineon crowd to its feet and closes out a pretty good nitro session.

Wilkerson is 4 - 1 against Arend in prior events and they meet here as the #4 and #13 qualifiers. Top Fuel featured several upsets so let's see what happens in this class. This was close most of the way down but it was Wilkerson that picks up the 20 points for the round win.

 (W) Bob Tasca III (Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustan 0.089 4.224 297.16
 (L) Brian Thiel (Case Agricultural Monte Carlo) 0.081 4.317 286.56
This is the first time Thiel and Tasca III have faced each other in eliminations. Paul Smith tunes Thiel to a nice run but just not enough to take out Tasca III. Bob Tasca III's MOV: 0.0857 seconds (approximately 36 feet). Tasca meets Wilkerson in the second round with Wilk getting choice.
 (W) Mike Neff (JFR/Ford Mustang) 0.122 4.127 302.35
 (L) Jerry Toliver (Canidae Pet Food Monte Carlo 0.185 7.945 78.66
Toliver and Neff have each won 1 time against the other in prior events. Toliver was just a bit tardy at the hit but it didn't matter as Neff unloads on the Jim Dunn tuned Canidae Pet Food car. Toliver smoked the tires before 300ft.
 (W) Cruz Pedregon (Advance Auto Parts Solara) 0.142 4.164 295.53
 (L) Matt Hagan (Shelor Motor Mile Charger) 0.101 4.234 295.59
Hagan is 2 - 0 against Pedregon in prior events. Out of the 16 spot C.Pedregon provides the upset of the day to this point as he takes out the #1 qualifier Hagan. C.Ped was second at the hit and didn't take the lead until about the 660ft clocks.
 (W) Ron Capps (NAPA Auto Parts Charger) 0.107 4.277 287.35
 (L) Ashley Force Hood (Castrol GTX Mustang) 0.070 4.713 192.80
Force Hood is 6 - 5 against Capps in prior events. Force-Hood ties Capps to the tree but loses traction around 330ft. Capps drove around Hood before half track and takes the pretty easy win.
 (W) Robert Hight (AAA of So. Cal Mustang) 0.096 4.159 299.06
 (L) Jack Beckman (Valvoline/MTS Charger) 0.131 4.153 299.80

Pedregon is 31 - 18 against Worsham in prior events. Pedregon goes in deep when he stages and still gets left on by Worsham. T.Ped trailed to 60ft but before 330 Worsham was up in smoke and that marked the end of his weekend. Neff has choice over T.Pedregon in round two.
 (W) Gary Densham (Larson Rock and Oil Impala) 0.138 4.214 290.82
 (L) John Force (Castrol GTX Mustang) 0.094 5.290 139.23
Force is 33 - 8 against Densham in prior events. Guess there's a trend there? Force took a big lead at the light and held it to about 300ft. Results for Final Round
SONOMA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4 eliminations in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 22nd annual FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Tim Wilkerson (Levi, Ray & Shoup Mustang) 0.096 4.249 284.45

4:00 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 84 degrees, relative humidity 40 percent, barometer 29.89 inches, adjusted altitude 2,363 feet, track temperature 121 degrees.

Pedregon is 20 - 10 against Wilkerson in prior events and Wilkerson is 2 - 1 against Pedregon in prior final rounds. Of course this is a re-run of the final at Seattle last weekend and you can bet that Pedregon is hoping to reverse that result as Wilkerson was the winner in that match. This was closer than it appears on paper as Wilkerson was still behind at 660ft. In that last 340ft Wilkerson pulled out his 13th National Event win.
