Results for Qualifying Round 1CLERMONT, Ind. - INDY - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Competition Eliminator at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, amount over/under index, and position in order following run, class and class index: Left Lane: Gary Merrick Runs 7.362/179.21/-0.508, Now #1 C/ED Index: 7.87 Right Lane: Don Winget Runs 8.466/159.82/-0.234, Now #2 B/SMA Index: 8.701:15 p.m.
Welcome to a beautiful day here in Clermont. It's pretty amazing for the Labor Day weekend, but we are enjoying Southern Californian weather instead of the usual midwest heat and humidity.
Weather conditions: air temperature 79 degrees, relative humidity 38 percent, barometer 29.20 inches, adjusted altitude 2,695 feet, track temperature 108 degrees.
A lot of people have been waiting for the mad scientists of drag racing to take the track. We've seen in previous sessions that Stock and Super Stock have been fast, so assuming the track is ready this first qualifying session should be memorable.
I don't see any glaring problems with the track, but I do have to admit it seems like there has been more than the usual touch up jobs on the starting line. I think it's more of a question of a track coming in than the Safety Safari trying to solve any problems. We'll know pretty soon, as one of the first pair is a Super Mod and they hit the starting line REAL hard.
A nice, steady, breeze of probably 10 miles per hour is moving from straight across from right to left or else blowing from 4 o'clock to 10 o'clock.
Both cars leave hard and go straight to the finish line.Left Lane: Darren Breaud Runs 8.531/156.46/-0.439, Now #2 D/SMA Index: 8.97 Right Lane: Larry Larson Runs 7.270/213.94/0.000, Now #4 AA/AT Index: 7.27Larson is filling in for the injured Steve Matusek. He runs big mph with the turbo, but the et won't be one he was hoping for.Left Lane: Brad Allen Runs 7.572/173.12/-0.298, Now #3 C/ED Index: 7.87 Right Lane: Jeff Wright Runs 15.941/51.47/8.381, Now #6 B/A Index: 7.56Left Lane: Jerry Arnold Runs 8.021/165.50/-0.539, Now #1 G/ED Index: 8.56 Right Lane: John Frech Runs 8.146/161.00/-0.494, Now #3 F/D Index: 8.64Arnold lays down a nice first shot and goes to the top.Left Lane: N. Panagiotaros Runs 7.235/194.63/-0.395, Now #5 B/AA Index: 7.63 Right Lane: Don Eberly Runs 7.629/159.08/-0.361, Now #6 C/AA Index: 7.99Left Lane: Terry Smith Runs 7.422/177.74/-0.518, Now #2 D/ED Index: 7.94 Right Lane: Travis Gusso Runs 8.892/151.75/-0.198, Now #10 E/SM Index: 9.09Left Lane: Jody Holland Runs 9.071/145.03/-0.479, Now #6 L/AA Index: 9.55 Right Lane: Robert Hass Runs 7.137/193.13/-0.493, Now #5 B/AA Index: 7.63Left Lane: Ernest Watson Runs 7.997/171.03/-0.563, Now #1 A/SMA Index: 8.56 Right Lane: Ray Vierheller No Time, Now #16 D/ED Index: 7.94Not good for Vierheller. As soon as he began to bring the rpms up to bump in, the car simply started moving with the instant redlight.
Watson puts down a very quick lap and shows the track is there for the taking.
Ernest Watson's incremental times: 60ft-1.158 sec., 330ft-3.313, 660ft-5.118/136.21 mph, 1,000ft-6.678.Left Lane: Mike Hazlett Runs 8.687/115.13/1.127, Now #16 B/A Index: 7.56 Right Lane: Todd Hoerner Runs 6.603/209.56/-0.547, Now #2 A/AA Index: 7.15This was a real show. After some early wiggles off the line, Hoerner storms to a time well below the national record. Very impressive, and there's obviously more left. Big speed!
Todd Hoerner's incremental times: 60ft-1.011 sec., 330ft-2.791, 660ft-4.260/167.47 mph, 1,000ft-5.529.Left Lane: Steve Ambrose Runs 7.856/165.42/-0.544, Now #3 J/AA Index: 8.40 Right Lane: Norman Saibene No Time, Now #19 K/A Index: 8.49Ambrose goes straight and strong. Saibene was timed out when his engine stalled while he was staging.Left Lane: Robbie Hudlow Runs 7.164/192.41/-0.466, Now #10 B/AA Index: 7.63 Right Lane: E. Shalkowski Runs 8.997/143.75/0.167, Now #18 F/ED Index: 8.83Shalkowski didn't seem to have any problems on the front half of the track, but it looked like the car slowed from that point on.Left Lane: Charles Watson Runs 8.778/154.30/-0.472, Now #10 F/SM Index: 9.25 Right Lane: Fred Gallo Runs 6.681/207.27/-0.469, Now #11 A/AA Index: 7.15Two nice passes, Gallo under the record. They slot into the order together.Left Lane: Clark Smiley Runs 15.947/50.01/7.267, Now #23 B/SM Index: 8.68 Right Lane: Russ Kelly Runs 6.889/196.85/-0.371, Now #15 A/AP Index: 7.26Smiley is out of power early and barely rolls to the first turnoff.Left Lane: D. Billingsley Runs 7.431/182.53/-0.429, Now #15 A/EA Index: 7.86 Right Lane: Matthew Harris Runs 7.779/174.53/-0.541, Now #4 E/A Index: 8.32Harris goes all the way to the fourth spot, while Billingsley's pass won't make anybody in that camp happy.Left Lane: Jim Greenheck Runs 8.677/123.18/0.687, Now #25 C/AA Index: 7.99 Right Lane: Mike Trumble Runs 8.410/135.46/-0.150, Now #22 A/SMA Index: 8.56This looks ugly. Trumble starts laying down a heavy smokescreen from about 300 foot on. They're checking the track.
Here come the trucks. We have a wet track.
1:44 p.m.Left Lane: Rick Brown Runs 8.290/162.33/-0.550, Now #3 B/TA Index: 8.84 Right Lane: Al Ackerman Runs 8.041/165.36/-0.599, Now #1 F/D Index: 8.64There's a section on the monitor that the announcers use that lists various notes and accomplishments for whatever racer is currently up. For this pair, both sections are pretty much full of wins, runners-up, and records held. Brown got a lot of his entries through Super Stock while Ackerman has been tough in Comp Eliminator ever since it existed.
1:56 p.m. The best track crew in racing has finished and both cars fire.
Stout runs for both racers, and Al goes to the top as expected. Brown is right behind him.Left Lane: Shaun Vincent Runs 8.580/153.33/-0.550, Now #4 C/TA Index: 9.13 Right Lane: Dennis Smiley Runs 6.638/202.39/-0.502, Now #11 A/DA Index: 7.14Smiley's car is totally stealth black with only the car number and class breaking the B-1 looks.
Things are starting to get more competitive as both cars go 5 under.Left Lane: Alan Ellis Runs 6.712/199.97/-0.548, Now #5 A/AP Index: 7.26 Right Lane: Tony Terry Runs 8.402/160.35/-0.508, Now #12 G/AA Index: 8.91Ellis' altered T has a big wing laid back over the turtledeck.
Alan is blistering the tired at the top of first but the car settles down on the shift and streaks to the finish line.Left Lane: John Edwards Runs 7.427/167.34/-0.563, Now #3 C/AA Index: 7.99 Right Lane: Richard Barga Runs 7.211/191.76/-0.559, Now #4 CC/AT Index: 7.77Barga is in an 09 Accord, which looks something like a Pontiac G6 in race car trim. The turbo pops once as he leaves but doesn't sound like World War III on the chip like a lot of turbo cars do. Or maybe I just can't hear the four banger.
Edwards' Neon is the slower of the pair but moves past the Accord in the order.
John Edwards' incremental times: 60ft-1.040 sec., 330ft-3.032, 660ft-4.705/147.10 mph, 1,000ft-6.148.
Richard Barga's incremental times: 60ft-1.131 sec., 330ft-3.074, 660ft-4.667/154.67 mph, 1,000ft-6.042.Left Lane: Brian Browell Runs 7.244/182.28/-0.566, Now #2 D/D Index: 7.81 Right Lane: Greg Kamplain Runs 7.109/185.08/-0.461, Now #23 C/DA Index: 7.57Local racer Browell uses his Jenkins Competition power to go very near the top spot. Very nice pass and the six cylinder was really singing on the top of the gears.
Kamplain bumps in a bit lower down the order.Left Lane: Doug Warren Runs 6.609/205.16/-0.531, Now #14 A/DA Index: 7.14 Right Lane: Pat Nahan Runs 7.513/176.79/-0.607, Now #1 E/D Index: 8.12503 inch Olds versus 302 inch Ford straight six. If you don't love Comp, I don't think there's any hope for you.
Nahan wings the Blue Oval dragster all the way to the top as he smashes past the 6 under barrier.Left Lane: Larry Pritchett Runs 8.151/166.68/-0.529, Now #15 B/SM Index: 8.68 Right Lane: Joey Tanksley Runs 12.336/63.50/4.886, Now #40 C/D Index: 7.45Tanksley left really hard, but the tires started giving up at about 75 feet out. They struggled for grip but went into big spin by 200 feet.Left Lane: Scott Chamness Runs 6.536/206.92/-0.504, Now #20 A/D Index: 7.04 Right Lane: Clint Neff Runs 7.942/153.72/-0.548, Now #10 K/A Index: 8.49Neff spins a bit off the line and is shaking hard by 40 feet. The little T Bucket starts bouncing hard but settles down on the gear change. That's a good indication of how strong the team is - a pretty much busted run and it's still good for the 10th spot.Left Lane: B. Stufflebeam Runs 7.406/177.28/-0.454, Now #30 A/EA Index: 7.86 Right Lane: Michael Hardee Runs 8.607/156.25/-0.483, Now #24 E/SM Index: 9.09Two door cars, two automatics.
It sounded like one of the cars was letting off at the other end, but I'm not sure who or why.
Brian Stufflebeam's incremental times: 60ft-1.028 sec., 330ft-2.980, 660ft-4.668/145.02 mph, 1,000ft-6.142.
Michael Hardee's incremental times: 60ft-1.227 sec., 330ft-3.523, 660ft-5.472/125.61 mph, 1,000ft-7.168.Left Lane: Adam Hickey Runs 8.234/163.83/-0.556, Now #8 C/SMA Index: 8.79 Right Lane: Charlie Greco Runs 7.646/177.56/-0.604, Now #2 D/AA Index: 8.25Both of these are bad hot rods and a lot of people are especially taking note of how hard Greco has been running.
Adam Hickey's incremental times: 60ft-1.166 sec., 330ft-3.358, 660ft-5.232/130.96 mph, 1,000ft-6.858.
Charlie Greco's incremental times: 60ft-1.064 sec., 330ft-3.127, 660ft-4.874/141.05 mph, 1,000ft-6.378.Left Lane: David Rampy Runs 7.303/181.15/-0.557, Now #8 A/EA Index: 7.86 Right Lane: Steve Holloway Runs 7.213/192.49/-0.417, Now #36 B/AA Index: 7.63Left Lane: Dave Yediny Runs 8.872/149.73/-0.618, Now #1 L/A Index: 9.49 Right Lane: Kyle Koretsky Runs 9.079/147.60/-0.251, Now #42 G/SM Index: 9.33Yediny in in the ex-Alan Armstrong Opel GT and is capable of making all the rest of his competitors wish they were in another division.
Yep, that little thing is stout. Yediny goes to the top.Left Lane: Fred Allen Runs 8.603/152.42/-0.517, Now #23 C/SR Index: 9.12 Right Lane: Todd Patterson Runs 7.776/176.35/-0.544, Now #17 E/A Index: 8.32Patterson is in one of the Sharp Contracting fleet. Allen always brings one of the finest-looking cars to be found.
Both cars go comfortably into the order but neither set the world on fire.
Fred Allen's incremental times: 60ft-1.207 sec., 330ft-3.476, 660ft-5.426/125.52 mph, 1,000ft-7.135.
Todd Patterson's incremental times: 60ft-1.136 sec., 330ft-3.230, 660ft-4.986/140.49 mph, 1,000ft-6.500.Left Lane: Paul Pittman Runs 10.055/92.67/2.425, Now #53 B/AA Index: 7.63 Right Lane: Jenny Treadwell Runs 8.461/156.34/-0.389, Now #41 E/ED Index: 8.85Note to self: The track is longer than 60 feet. Pitman leaves hard but the tires can't maintain and they go into shake. He fights to regain traction and finally gives up. PS - he had a pretty good 60 foot, but...
Treadwell is in for now - remember this is a 64 car field. We're still a few cars away from having a bump.Left Lane: Mauri Rose Runs 7.476/170.97/0.026, Now #51 C/D Index: 7.45 Right Lane: Robert Bailey Runs 6.626/205.26/-0.574, Now #5 A/ED Index: 7.20Bailey cards a good pass and is deep into the field. That's some great data for future tuning this weekend.Left Lane: Shane Gray Runs 7.093/195.28/-0.467, Now #35 B/A Index: 7.56 Right Lane: Gerry Russo Runs 8.515/162.51/-0.275, Now #47 C/SMA Index: 8.79Gray spun hard in first but the wheelspeed recovered and the car settled down right after the gear change.Left Lane: Mike Farrell Runs 7.420/177.72/-0.440, Now #40 A/EA Index: 7.86 Right Lane: F. Aragona Jr. Runs 8.343/155.61/-0.537, Now #21 G/EA Index: 8.88Two Bantams on the line, and two very tough teams.
Aragona does a much larger wheelstand than I'm used to seeing from him. Farrell smoothly goes to the end.Left Lane: Jason Coan Runs 8.327/154.78/-0.553, Now #13 G/EA Index: 8.88 Right Lane: Glen Treadwell Runs 7.993/157.45/-0.567, Now #6 G/ED Index: 8.56A pair of squeak motors giving their all. This is not usually a good time of year for them but with the unseasonable weather we may be surprised.
Treadwell gets there first and qualifies higher, at least for this session.Left Lane: Bo Butner Runs 8.446/158.32/-0.524, Now #27 C/SM Index: 8.97 Right Lane: Arnie Martel Runs 7.657/176.44/-0.593, Now #5 D/AA Index: 8.25Slick pass for Martel.
Bo Butner's incremental times: 60ft-1.182 sec., 330ft-3.450, 660ft-5.367/128.68 mph, 1,000ft-7.036.
Arnie Martel's incremental times: 60ft-1.062 sec., 330ft-3.122, 660ft-4.872/140.63 mph, 1,000ft-6.382.Left Lane: David Eaton Runs 6.762/202.61/-0.498, Now #34 A/AP Index: 7.26We're getting to the end of the assigned qualifying order and Eaton is assigned a single in the left lane.Left Lane: J. Gebhardt-StillNo Time, Now #68 A/ED Index: 7.20 Right Lane: Lee Sharp No Time, Now #70 D/AA Index: 8.25Sharp hasn't pulled out of staging as the car doesn't start. Gephardt-Still has already done her burnout.
After waiting a generous amount of time, she's waved to the starting line and will get a single.
That was different. She stages, goes on the chip, and leaves. The car grunts and only moves the first few feet. I'm thinking a trans or brake problem because the engine shut off immediately.
That's the end of Q1 and to be honest wasn't what I was expecting. Stay tuned because it's going to get better and better as we go into the Days of Indy.

Results for Qualifying Round 2CLERMONT, Ind. - INDY - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Competition Eliminator at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed this round, amount over/under index this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time, speed & over/under Index, and position in order prior to run: Left Lane: Jeff Wright Runs 7.246/191.54/-0.314, Now #53 B/A Index: 7.56 Prior Best: 15.941/51.48/8.381, Was #64 Right Lane: Fred Allen Runs 8.546/152.97/-0.574, Now #7 C/SR Index: 9.12 Prior Best: 8.603/152.42/-0.517, Was #29Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 41 percent, barometer 29.16 inches, adjusted altitude 2,848 feet, track temperature 111 degrees.4:18 p.m.
The starting line crew is finishing up their touch up with a light sweep and drag.
Allen in the Speedco roadster pulls up against the solid bright yellow of the Cavalier. Both cars looked good at the hit but it's Allen who makes the big move.Left Lane: Travis Gusso Runs 8.878/152.52/-0.212, Now #57 E/SM Index: 9.09 Prior Best: 8.892/151.75/-0.198, Was #57 Right Lane: Robbie Hudlow No Time, Now #42 B/AA Index: 7.63 Prior Best: 7.164/192.41/-0.466, Was #42Pucker time behind the line as Hudlow's Cobalt began smoking heavily from under the front end as he began to pull into the water. It was nasty looking smoke, greyish-brownish-green and greasy looking.
The starting line crew was on top of the problem immediately with veteran Gus Smith leading the charge. You could tell there was a bunch of heat by the way the crew removed the front end, as they'd jerk their hands back only to try again.
The fire goes out with a quick squirt of an extinguisher and there doesn't look to be severe damage from what I can see other than a lot of black soot covering most of the parts.
Remember what I said last session about this crew being the best in the business? I truly meant it then, and their instant professional response here saved a lot of money to Hudlow and even more importantly we don't have the ambulance moving one inch out of its parking spot.
We're down as the scrubber starts circling the area to clean the extinguisher output.
After patiently waiting, Gusso pulls into the water and does his burnout. I honestly don't know if it's his first or second as I lost track with all the activity over on the right side.Left Lane: Kyle Koretsky Runs 10.953/89.32/1.623, Now #62 G/SM Index: 9.33 No Prior Run Right Lane: Larry Pritchett Runs 8.125/167.55/-0.555, Now #15 B/SM Index: 8.68 Prior Best: 8.151/166.68/-0.529, Was #27Pritchett gets into the top quarter. Korestsky slowed at half track though from my angle I couldn't see why.Left Lane: Matthew Harris Runs 7.714/175.46/-0.606, Now #3 E/A Index: 8.32 Prior Best: 7.779/174.53/-0.541, Was #24 Right Lane: Ernest Watson Runs 8.006/170.58/-0.554, Now #11 A/SMA Index: 8.56 Prior Best: 7.997/171.03/-0.563, Was #10Harris steps up a bunch with a great run. Watson repeats and only loses a spot.
Matthew Harris' incremental times: 60ft-1.088 sec., 330ft-3.159, 660ft-4.914/140.14 mph, 1,000ft-6.432.Left Lane: Don Winget Runs 8.314/163.79/-0.386, Now #51 B/SMA Index: 8.70 Prior Best: 8.466/159.82/-0.234, Was #56 Right Lane: Charles Watson Runs 8.774/152.50/-0.476, Now #39 F/SM Index: 9.25 Prior Best: 8.778/154.30/-0.472, Was #39Not much help in either lane with this pair.Left Lane: Gary Agan Runs 7.413/185.00/0.023, Now #59 B/DA Index: 7.39 No Prior Run Right Lane: Jody Holland Runs 9.071/145.55/-0.479, Now #38 L/AA Index: 9.55 Prior Best: 9.071/145.03/-0.479, Was #38Agan has some surging problems from what I heard during the run and doesn't go under his index.
Holland repeats and at this point that's not what these racers are looking for.Left Lane: Ray Vierheller Runs 7.445/176.47/-0.495, Now #36 D/ED Index: 7.94 No Prior Run Right Lane: N. Panagiotaros Runs 7.113/194.18/-0.517, Now #30 B/AA Index: 7.63 Prior Best: 7.235/194.63/-0.395, Was #49Vierheller gets an ET this time and Panagiotaros steps way up.Left Lane: Clint Neff Runs 7.836/155.15/-0.654, Now #1 K/A Index: 8.49 Prior Best: 7.942/153.72/-0.548, Was #21 Right Lane: Terry Smith Runs 7.511/177.37/-0.429, Now #29 D/ED Index: 7.94 Prior Best: 7.422/177.74/-0.518, Was #29Neff's car gets the job done this time with no bouncing or odd movements. He goes straight to the top of the list.
I still have a hard time thinking of Smith in a dragster as I always associated him with the open Altereds he ran.Left Lane: Al Ackerman Runs 19.280/105.36/10.640, Now #6 F/D Index: 8.64 Prior Best: 8.041/165.36/-0.599, Was #6 Right Lane: Shane Gray Runs 7.043/195.79/-0.517, Now #31 B/A Index: 7.56 Prior Best: 7.093/195.28/-0.467, Was #43Ackerman's dragster nosed over almost immediately. I didn't hear anything unusual; t sounded as if the engine just quit.
Gray's in the other lane and gets another .05 out of his Hemi. He's just barely in the top half of the field.Left Lane: Robert Hass Runs 9.141/109.23/1.511, Now #39 B/AA Index: 7.63 Prior Best: 7.137/193.13/-0.493, Was #39 Right Lane: Paul Pittman Runs 7.152/194.10/-0.478, Now #42 B/AA Index: 7.63 Prior Best: 10.055/92.67/2.425, Was #65I meant to mention that I saw Jerry Haas and Erica Enders checking out the track before the session. No doubt that the Mustang Pro Stock program will be handing down a lot of technology into Comp.
Pitman's pass looked a lot quicker than it turned out to be. Hass begins smoking at half track and the cloud intensifies out of the left side the further he gets down the track. He gets out of the throttle and coasts across the line after moving to the wall, out of the groove.
We've got stuff on the track and the trucks roll. Crew with lacquer thinner jugs start working at about 250 feet and the scrubber waits for its turn.
Hey, it's Indy. Everybody is leaning on their stuff a lot harder.Left Lane: Norman Saibene Runs 9.705/106.16/1.215, Now #66 K/A Index: 8.49 No Prior Run Right Lane: Jim Greenheck Runs 7.526/180.24/-0.464, Now #46 C/AA Index: 7.99 No Prior RunSaibene came to the line last session but wasn't able to stage so this pass is shown as his first.
Greenheck's Camaro kicks a touch to the side on the hit but immediately straightens up for a straight pass. He gets in, Saibene doesn't.Left Lane: Russ Kelly Runs 6.853/198.06/-0.407, Now #53 A/AP Index: 7.26 Prior Best: 6.889/196.85/-0.371, Was #55 Right Lane: Scott Chamness Runs 10.156/83.37/3.116, Now #34 A/D Index: 7.04 Prior Best: 6.536/206.92/-0.504, Was #34Kelly picks up a tad and moves just a couple of spots. Chamness slows by half track and coasts to the turn off.Left Lane: E. Shalkowski Runs 9.013/143.40/0.183, Now #65 F/ED Index: 8.83 Prior Best: 8.997/143.75/0.167, Was #64 Right Lane: Clark Smiley Runs 8.157/166.56/-0.523, Now #29 B/SM Index: 8.68 Prior Best: 15.947/50.02/7.267, Was #69Smiley gets a decent run this time and goes from the bottom to deep into the top half.Left Lane: Fred Gallo Runs 7.938/116.83/0.788, Now #45 A/AA Index: 7.15 Prior Best: 6.681/207.27/-0.469, Was #45 Right Lane: Steve Ambrose Runs 7.875/164.91/-0.525, Now #23 J/AA Index: 8.40 Prior Best: 7.856/165.42/-0.544, Was #23Ambrose hiked the wheels on the launch and the car tried to turn left. The tires landed and he brought it back into the groove. That costs him.
Gallo was coasting on the top end but I didn't see anything obvious.Left Lane: Dennis Smiley Runs 6.639/202.15/-0.501, Now #36 A/DA Index: 7.14 Prior Best: 6.638/202.39/-0.502, Was #36 Right Lane: Gary Merrick Runs 7.345/179.80/-0.525, Now #28 C/ED Index: 7.87 Prior Best: 7.362/179.21/-0.508, Was #33Left Lane: Michael Lyons Runs 7.137/185.21/-0.343, Now #58 B/ED Index: 7.48 No Prior Run Right Lane: Brian Browell Runs 9.841/88.69/2.031, Now #11 D/D Index: 7.81 Prior Best: 7.244/182.28/-0.566, Was #11Lyons gets on the roster. I saw a hint of smoke from Browell's left bank and he steps off the throttle.Left Lane: Greg Kamplain Runs 7.081/184.98/-0.489, Now #41 C/DA Index: 7.57 Prior Best: 7.109/185.08/-0.461, Was #48 Right Lane: Jason Coan Runs 8.285/155.31/-0.595, Now #7 G/EA Index: 8.88 Prior Best: 8.327/154.78/-0.553, Was #18Coan's tiny altered steps up, and when you're way up there to start with that puts you in the top ten.
Kamplain steps up also but it doesn't do nearly as much good.Left Lane: Don Eberly Runs 7.634/164.57/-0.356, Now #57 C/AA Index: 7.99 Prior Best: 7.629/159.08/-0.361, Was #57 Right Lane: Dave Yediny Runs 8.745/150.92/-0.745, Now #1 L/A Index: 9.49 Prior Best: 8.872/149.73/-0.618, Was #2Eberly's Cavalier makes a couple of moves off the line but he gets it back into the groove.
Yediny flexes his muscles. So, you're in the #2 position and want to take over the top spot? I don't often see a car pick up a tenth and a half to make that happen.
I doubt we've seen all of it yet.Left Lane: Charlie Greco Runs 7.680/177.44/-0.570, Now #5 D/AA Index: 8.25 Prior Best: 7.646/177.56/-0.604, Was #5 Right Lane: Rick Brown Runs 8.283/162.78/-0.557, Now #17 B/TA Index: 8.84 Prior Best: 8.290/162.33/-0.550, Was #19Charlie Greco's incremental times: 60ft-1.061 sec., 330ft-3.149, 660ft-4.904/140.49 mph, 1,000ft-6.411.

We've got a raging, snorting 200 mph Mustang against a very serious small inch Chevy dragster.
Larson really steps up in the Aeromotive car but doesn't gain a whole lot other than moving off the bump. The car squatted on the leave, wiggled a couple of times, and then took off big time. Arnold has a good pass with the engine singing soprano the entire length of the track.Left Lane: Lee Sharp Runs 7.585/177.51/-0.665, Now #2 D/AA Index: 8.25 No Prior Run Right Lane: Mike Farrell Runs 7.516/177.02/-0.344, Now #53 A/EA Index: 7.86 Prior Best: 7.420/177.72/-0.440, Was #52The very strong and professional Sharp team had a very rare misfire and didn't get a time in the first session. Lee makes up for all that and slots in behind the Evil Opel.Left Lane: Michael Hardee Runs 8.528/162.53/-0.562, Now #18 E/SM Index: 9.09 Prior Best: 8.607/156.25/-0.483, Was #44 Right Lane: Brad Allen Runs 7.605/171.84/-0.265, Now #63 C/ED Index: 7.87 Prior Best: 7.572/173.12/-0.298, Was #63Left Lane: Todd Patterson Runs 7.737/176.44/-0.583, Now #11 E/A Index: 8.32 Prior Best: 7.776/176.35/-0.544, Was #27 Right Lane: David Eaton Runs 6.747/203.25/-0.513, Now #38 A/AP Index: 7.26 Prior Best: 6.762/202.61/-0.498, Was #41Patterson takes a big swing and gets a bit more of the ball this time around. I don't think he'd consider it a home run, maybe more of a double or triple. And I promise that's the last baseball analogy I'll use.
Eaton's a bit loose and only gains a bit.Left Lane: Robert Bailey Runs 6.625/204.05/-0.575, Now #12 A/ED Index: 7.20 Prior Best: 6.626/205.26/-0.574, Was #12 Right Lane: Duane Robison No Time, Now #73 C/A Index: 7.98 No Prior RunRobinson's car wasn't even completely loaded before the nose dropped. It was still squatting and lifting the nose; then everything went silent and the Corvette waits for a tow at half track.
Bailey runs within a thousandth of his first pass.
Gerry Russo is currently on the bump spot at -0.275.Left Lane: Pat Nahan Runs 7.467/177.14/-0.653, Now #4 E/D Index: 8.12 Prior Best: 7.513/176.79/-0.607, Was #5 Right Lane: David Rampy Runs 7.390/159.64/-0.470, Now #21 A/EA Index: 7.86 Prior Best: 7.303/181.15/-0.557, Was #21Nahan's very close to the top with a stout pass in the first session. Rampy is very deep in the field and may be looking at different qualifying strategies as he's a master of working the ladder to best advantage.
In fact, he's almost a tenth slower.Left Lane: Steve Holloway Runs 7.214/192.80/-0.416, Now #55 B/AA Index: 7.63 Prior Best: 7.213/192.49/-0.417, Was #55 Right Lane: Bo Butner Runs 8.488/156.77/-0.482, Now #33 D/SMA Index: 8.97 Prior Best: 8.446/158.32/-0.524, Was #33Left Lane: Gerry Russo Runs 8.323/150.08/-0.467, Now #50 C/SMA Index: 8.79 Prior Best: 8.515/162.51/-0.275, Was #64 Right Lane: Darren Breaud Runs 8.546/156.64/-0.424, Now #55 D/SMA Index: 8.97 Prior Best: 8.531/156.46/-0.439, Was #54Left Lane: F. Brad Allen is now on the bump spot at -0.298.Left Lane: Jenny Treadwell Runs 8.506/155.11/-0.344, Now #58 E/ED Index: 8.85 Prior Best: 8.461/156.34/-0.389, Was #58 Right Lane: Alan Ellis Runs 9.843/111.85/2.583, Now #26 A/AP Index: 7.26 Prior Best: 6.712/199.97/-0.548, Was #26Ellis hammers the starting line and shakes hard. The car's moving around and real unhappy. He pedals and moves back to the groove but the car doesn't settle down and he lifts.Left Lane: Arnie Martel Runs 7.657/175.89/-0.593, Now #10 D/AA Index: 8.25 Prior Best: 7.657/176.44/-0.593, Was #10 Right Lane: Shaun Vincent Runs 8.577/153.72/-0.553, Now #25 C/TA Index: 9.13 Prior Best: 8.580/153.33/-0.550, Was #25Both of these cars repeat almost exactly. Bunch of cars? It's Indy and always tough? Yawn... Ain't no thing for the K&N guy as he slots into the good half of the order. Mission accomplished.
That's it for Comp. We're getting going pretty good here in Indy so be sure and stop back by as the action continues to heat up.

The main question going in to this session revolves around the #1 qualifying spot. We have a bunch of very fast cars here, and there's been some discussion as to which car will wind up in that spot.
We start the round with a pair of clutch cars, so hopefully we can get a quick gauge of the starting line.

I'm betting that there's a venting problem with a new engine. I've had friends go through the same problem and it's one of the most difficult, frustrating situations a racer ever sees. I remember countless dyno pulls without a single problem but the oil wanted to leave the engine every time a pass was made.
10:34 a.m. and we're back to racing with both scrubbers back in standby. We'll test the track with two of the highest horsepower cars in the class.

The crew is looking under the car in the bellhousing area. The starter gives Ambrose the "single" sign.
After the little T clears the traps, Bailey fires and idles to the other end.
The crew is checking the right lane and we see the spray tractor come out. I'm not sure what's up as I don't think Bailey ever got that far. They are mopping the area just behind the line, though.
