Results for Qualifying Round 1
CLERMONT, Ind. - INDY - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Right Lane: Scott Ray Runs 10.055/79.16, Now #1
Left Lane: S. Christopher Runs 7.129/206.01, Now #2
Right Lane: Ike Maier Runs 6.079/230.49, Now #1
Left Lane: Adam Flamholc Runs 6.767/154.53, Now #3
Right Lane: Tommy D'aprile Runs 6.430/174.48, Now #2
We just did a quick clean and scrape which seemed to help this pair a bit. Tommy lays down a very good pass for a first hit while Flamholc noses over on the big end.

No good deed goes unpunished as the trucks roll for oil on the top end. It looks like both lanes were lubricated.

Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 45 percent, barometer 29.16 inches, adjusted altitude 2,931 feet, track temperature 99 degrees.

Left Lane: Dennis Radford Runs 6.116/229.35, Now #2
Right Lane: John Russo Runs 6.667/170.13, Now #4
5:34 p.m.

That was a long one, but we get the OK that the track is once again ready for racing.

Nice pass for Radford. Russo kicked way sideways on the 1-2 gear change and struggled to get the truck settled down. He lost a bunch of ET and speed doing so.
Left Lane: Jason Stock Runs 6.123/233.12, Now #3
Right Lane: Rick Distefano Runs 6.237/230.61, Now #4
Fairly straight shots on both sides, though Distefano lost ground quickly on the top end.
Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 6.107/238.26, Now #2
Right Lane: Kirk Wilmes Runs 6.120/231.95, Now #4
Melanie does a great job of handling the car as it tail wags pretty much the entire length of the quarter. That's a career best for her in this class and she also sets high speed so far. She goes into the second slot.

Wilmes is right there and is just a tick or two slower.
Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.053/233.24, Now #1
Right Lane: Rick Stivers Runs 6.647/162.10, Now #9
Rickie does the Sheik proud as he blasts to the top spot. Stivers' engine was not happy as it was surging and/or popping at different points down the track.
Left Lane: Mike Knowles Runs 6.013/240.98, Now #1
Right Lane: Brad Personett Runs 6.099/247.88, Now #4
This was a great pair! Knowles makes the straightest run so far. Personett leaves pretty soft to control all that turbo boost and is right there at the finish line.
Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.963/239.27, Now #1
Right Lane: Tim Tindle Runs 6.051/236.46, Now #3
Payne gets everybody's attention as he blasts into the fives and goes to the top spot. He was strong from the first foot to the last one.

Jay Payne's incremental times: 60ft-1.003 sec., 330ft-2.617, 660ft-3.913/191.00 mph, 1,000ft-5.023.
Tim Tindle's incremental times: 60ft-1.024 sec., 330ft-2.666, 660ft-3.978/189.42 mph, 1,000ft-5.101.
Left Lane: Joe Baker Runs 5.983/241.20, Now #3
Right Lane: Roger Burgess Runs 5.960/242.45, Now #1
We're having fun now! Side by side fives as Burgess takes over the king of the hill. His Camaro was moving around pretty hard when he hit second but it still laid down the best lap.

Joe Baker's incremental times: 60ft-0.994 sec., 330ft-2.627, 660ft-3.937/189.58 mph, 1,000ft-5.049.
Roger Burgess' incremental times: 60ft-0.989 sec., 330ft-2.622, 660ft-3.922/191.05 mph, 1,000ft-5.030.
Left Lane: Raymond Commisso Runs 6.158/240.98, Now #13
Right Lane: Danny Rowe Runs 22.106/33.04, Now #21
Rowe goes into immediate shake. Commisso's rpms didn't really rise as he left, but by 250 feet they shot to the moon as he struggled to keep the car straight.
Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 6.073/231.79, Now #7
Right Lane: Burton Auxier Runs 6.099/231.60, Now #10
It's an all Al-Anabi pair. Both cars make decent passes and get into the show.

After one round of qualifying, Burgess leads the field with Distefano on the bump.

Results for Qualifying Round 2
CLERMONT, Ind. - INDY - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Danny Rowe Runs 5.943/245.54, Now #1
                                  No Prior Run
3:47 p.m.

Rick Distefano is on the bump spot at 6.237.

No problem for Rowe as he moves into the show directly to the top spot. The run was really nice but it sounded as if there was more left since the car sounded as if it layed over just a touch in second gear.
Left Lane: Scott Ray Runs 9.166/87.79, Now #23
Best prior run: 10.055/79.16, Was #22
Right Lane: S. Christoffel Runs 6.365/215.13, Now #18
                                  No Prior Run
Ray is spinning the tires hard and skates left, then right, and then gives up. Christoffel goes down the track but only moves into the 18th spot.
Left Lane: John Russo Runs 6.112/238.13, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.667/170.13, Was #21
Right Lane: Adam Flamholc Runs 6.120/228.73, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.767/154.53, Was #22
The Swedish Flamholc bought Taylor Lastor's Camaro. He's been here in the states before racing Pro Stock but the blowers are new to him.

Both cars get in for now.
Left Lane: Rick Stivers Runs 7.031/155.29, Now #22
Best prior run: 6.647/162.10, Was #22
Right Lane: Raymond Commisso Runs 6.131/241.97, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.158/240.98, Was #18
Commisso is back out after his massive crash earlier this year. He gets through first gear without any major problems but the car starts getting loose after the gear change. The swings get wider and Raymond has to feather the throttle.

Stivers was on a good pass until the top end where the smoke he laid down are probably the sign of a number of ventilated pistons.
Left Lane: Tommy D'aprile Runs 6.301/187.47, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.430/174.48, Was #21
Right Lane: Jason Stock Runs 6.079/232.95, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.123/233.12, Was #17
Tommy gets some pistons, too, right about the 800 foot mark. Stock has his car under control all the way and just misses the top half.

They're taking a close look at the top end in D'aprile's lane.
Left Lane: Rick Distefano Runs 6.283/227.00, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.237/230.61, Was #19
Right Lane: Dennis Radford Runs 11.732/91.77, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.116/229.35, Was #15
Radford gets loose early and throws in the towel.

The Corvette loses a bit from the previous session. Nothing obviously wrong, just not quick enough.
Left Lane: Kirk Wilmes Runs 20.120/40.47, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.120/231.95, Was #16
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 6.015/241.02, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.107/238.26, Was #13
Melanie's in the sharp Voodoo Corvette this weekend.

She's a crowd favorite so the stand erupt as she goes way low into the sixes. Very nice job of joggling the car down the track.

Wilmes is coasting early.
Left Lane: Burton Auxier Runs 6.056/234.29, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.099/231.60, Was #13
Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 5.963/237.75, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.073/231.79, Was #9
It's unusual to see these cars this low in the order, but that changes real quick as they both step up. Castellana's Camaro was slowly wagging its tail from 300' on, but it sure didn't seem to hurt the ET.

Kirk Wilmes is on the bump spot at 6.120.
Left Lane: Brad Personett Runs 6.101/248.84, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.099/247.88, Was #13
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.030/234.37, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.053/233.24, Was #9
Left Lane: Ike Maier Runs 8.112/129.70, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.079/230.49, Was #12
Right Lane: Mike Knowles Runs 5.977/240.64, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.013/240.98, Was #6
Both cars were mirror images until half track when Maier's tires starting spinning up into the ozone while Knowles' slicks were still driving the car.
Left Lane: Tim Tindle Runs 6.059/236.55, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.051/236.46, Was #9
Right Lane: Joe Baker Runs 5.949/240.85, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.983/241.20, Was #6
That was a great pair, running pretty much side by side.

Kirk Wilmes remains on the bump spot at 6.120.
Left Lane: Roger Burgess No Time, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.960/242.45, Was #3
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 12.666/90.74, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.963/239.27, Was #4
Pretty much looney tunes on this one. Burgess left way before the tree was activated and Payne followed him but went into instant shake.

That's it for the session and Danny Rowe holds on to the top spot.

Results for Elimination Round 1
CLERMONT, Ind. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Pro Modified at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Rickie Smith (Al-Anabi '68 Camaro) 0.076 5.997 234.94
 (L) Tim Tindle (*'67 Mustang) 0.066 7.525 147.97
9:00 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 68 degrees, relative humidity 76 percent, barometer 29.16 inches, adjusted altitude 2,182 feet, track temperature 76 degrees.

The good news for Pro Modified was that they get to run all four rounds on the final day of the U.S. Nationals. The bad news is, the first round is being run before driver introductions.

Tindle blew the tires loose, got sideways, made a hard move toward the centerline, pedaled, and 'Tricky Rickie' was long gone by then. Nice run by Smith, straight and very quick. Rickie Smith's incremental times: 60ft-0.986 sec., 330ft-2.630, 660ft-3.930/191.05 mph, 1,000ft-5.043.

 (W) Burton Auxier (Al-Anabi '68 Firebird) 0.012 5.985 234.45
 (L) Melanie Troxel (*'63 Corvette) 0.090 6.014 238.81
This should have been a very close drag race, but Auxier treed Troxel and then ran away from her for the win. Burton Auxier's incremental times: 60ft-0.972 sec., 330ft-2.612, 660ft-3.917/190.30 mph, 1,000ft-5.032.
 (W) Mike Knowles (*'63 Corvette) 0.035 6.208 213.47
 (L) Jason Stock (*'63 Corvette) 0.061 10.447 113.00
Both cars shook hard on the launch, Stock almost into the wall. Knowles pedaled a couple times and recovered, but his car was very loose on the top end. The starting line crew mopped up a lot of fluid in Stock's lane, explaining why his car made such a violent move to the right.
 (W) Ike Maier ('63 Corvette) 0.080 6.038 230.29
 (L) Mike Castellana (Al-Anabi '70 Camaro) 0.033 6.087 235.19
After seeing Stock's problems, Castellana elected to move over to the left lane.

Maier won't set many records, but he will consistently go down the track with a low six-second run just about every time. This time he was uncharacteristically late and Castellana had a big head start, but early shake gave Maier the early elad and he never gave it up after that. Ike Maier's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.035), 330 ft(0.036), 660ft(0.041), 1,000ft(0.021). MOV: 0.0025 seconds (approximately 10 inches).

 (W) Jay Payne (Valvoline/BAE *'68 Camaro) 0.106 6.007 238.89
 (L) Brad Personett (Big Stuff *'68 Camaro) 0.100 6.090 240.72
Both cars took the "scenic route" to the stripe in another close race. Jay Payne's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.018), 330 ft(0.047), 660ft(0.068), 1,000ft(0.078). MOV: 0.0775 seconds (approximately 27 feet). Payne will have lane choice against Maier in the quarterfinals.
 (W) Roger Burgess (ProCare RX *'67 Camaro) 0.122 5.979 241.45
 (L) John Russo (*'00 S-10) 0.130 6.723 164.79
Burgess made a last-minute change, taking the right lane - and the following paiur changed places at the head of staging.

Russo's car was off-pace early and he shut it off before 1,000 feet. Nice pass by Burgess and he will have lane choice against Knowles in round two. Roger Burgess' incremental times: 60ft-0.996 sec., 330ft-2.649, 660ft-3.949/192.00 mph, 1,000ft-5.049.

 (W) Dennis Radford ('70 Duster) 0.047 6.048 231.08
 (L) Joe Baker (Mike Ashley *'68 Camaro) 0.014 6.200 236.38
Radford picked a good time to make his best run of the weekend, while Baker made his worst, having to do a full pedal job about 100 feet out. Radford races Auxier next round, Auxier will pick the lanes.
 (W) Danny Rowe (*'67 Camaro) 0.061 5.949 243.68
 (L) Kirk Wilmes (*'68 Firebird) 0.037 8.683 116.19
Wilmes shook, pedaled, got sideways, and gave it up. Rowe made a very nice run, with low ET and top speed of the round. He has lane choice against Smith in the quarterfinals. Danny Rowe's incremental times: 60ft-0.994 sec., 330ft-2.638, 660ft-3.932/192.58 mph, 1,000ft-5.027.

Results for Elimination Round 2
CLERMONT, Ind. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Pro Modified at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Ike Maier ('63 Corvette) 0.094 6.116 214.86
 (L) Jay Payne (FireIce *'68 Camaro) 0.081 DQ-Centerline
1:53 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 82 degrees, relative humidity 54 percent, barometer 29.15 inches, adjusted altitude 3,182 feet, track temperature 101 degrees.

Both drivers are from Ontario - Maier from Tottenham, Ontario and Payne from Ontario, California.

Payne got off the line first, but his car shook on the launch, giving Maier the early lead, then was loose, moving to the left, taking out the 660-foot timing reflector. The DQ probably didn't matter, Maier was leading at the time and was never headed after taking the early lead.

 (W) Danny Rowe (*'67 Camaro) 0.093 5.986 241.67
 (L) Rickie Smith (Al-Anabi '68 Camaro) 0.044 7.845 123.27
Smith was first off the starting line, by a bunch, but his car shook and skated around about 100 feet out, letting Rowe take the lead and pull away for the win. Rowe's car is a very quick bracket-racer, running another high five-ninety to get lane choice against Maier in the semifinals.
 (W) Burton Auxier (Al-Anabi '68 Firebird) 0.026 6.025 234.21
 (L) Dennis Radford ('70 Duster) 0.029 6.075 230.96
Weather conditions: air temperature 76 degrees, relative humidity 62 percent, barometer 29.13 inches, adjusted altitude 2,820 feet, track temperature 101 degrees.

Auxier leads the points and just keeps on adding to his totals, winning this one by almost a car length after a dead-even start. Radford was right there, but Auxier's car was on rails.

 (W) Roger Burgess (ProCare RX *'67 Camaro) 0.082 6.062 241.07
 (L) Mike Knowles (*'63 Corvette) 0.017 8.408 110.60
Knowles' '63 Corvette shook and made a hard move toward the wall on the launch, while Burgess went "right down Broadway." However, he was not quick enough and Auxier will have lane choice in the semifinals.

Results for Elimination Round 3
CLERMONT, Ind. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 3 eliminations in Pro Modified at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Roger Burgess (ProCare RX *'67 Camaro) 0.036 5.996 239.74
 (L) Burton Auxier (Al-Anabi '68 Firebird) 0.003 6.068 232.99
3:22 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 59 percent, barometer 29.13 inches, adjusted altitude 2,973 feet, track temperature 102 degrees.

Auxier tattoeed the tree, but Burgess wasn't too shabby either and he had the power to take the lead just before half track and pull ahead to stay. Roger Burgess' incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.018), 330 ft(-0.010), 660ft(0.004), 1,000ft(0.017). MOV: 0.0397 seconds (approximately 14 feet).

 (W) Danny Rowe (*'67 Camaro) 0.087 5.973 241.97
 (L) Ike Maier ('63 Corvette) 0.127 6.121 228.38
Both drivers have been consistent, but Rowe has been consistently quicker and faster all weekend. Both drivers did what they have been doing all weekend, and that was bad news for Maier. Rowe will have lane choice against Burgess in the final round.

 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Roger Burgess (ProCare RX *'67 Camaro) 0.027 5.956 241.80

4:30 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 59 percent, barometer 29.11 inches, adjusted altitude 2,993 feet, track temperature 101 degrees.

The #1 and #3 qualifiers end up facing each other in the final round and neither has ever won at this event. They are tuned by two of the best, Jimmy Rector turning the wrenches for Rowe, Al Billes the tuner for Burgess.

Rowe's bracket-racer finally let him down, falling off the pace on the top end after a close race to half track. Burgess made his best run of the event to turn on the win light.
