Results for Qualifying Round 1
CLERMONT, Ind. - INDY - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil listing lane, rider name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Right Lane: GT Tonglet Runs 7.809/133.39, Now #1
5:56 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 47 percent, barometer 29.16 inches, adjusted altitude 2,928 feet, track temperature 101 degrees.

First bike down is Tonlet on a single.

No joy as he shuts down early.

Left Lane: Chip Ellis Runs 7.056/186.38, Now #1
Right Lane: Geoff Godfrey Runs 7.752/164.25, Now #2
Godfrey tests the lights and scores a 0.002 RT. That ET isn't likely to last long.

Nice pass for Ellis in his first appearence of the year.
Left Lane: LE Tonglet Runs 11.515/69.02, Now #5
Right Lane: Redell Harris Runs 7.424/147.47, Now #2
LE had a strong sixty foot and three-thirty times, but gave up the run.

Harris' time is iffy for the bump.
Left Lane: Katie Sullivan Runs 7.594/174.66, Now #4
Right Lane: Joe DeSantis Runs 7.249/184.37, Now #2
DeSantis gets a good run to tune to for later sessions.

Sullivan leaves hard, but can't find the necessary HP.
Left Lane: Jim Underdahl Runs 7.140/185.74, Now #2
Right Lane: David Hope Runs 7.405/179.02, Now #4
That's better! Underdahl makes a nice pass to take over the new #2 spot.

Hope will need better numbers later.

Jim Underdahl's incremental times: 60ft-1.087 sec., 330ft-2.951, 660ft-4.541/153.98 mph, 1,000ft-5.937.
Left Lane: Angie McBride Runs 7.157/184.22, Now #3
Right Lane: Wesley Wells No Time, Now #11
Alright! We finally get a representative pair down the track and McBride goes well into the field for now.

Not! Wells was right behind her, but the bike drifted over and nailed the top end reflectors.
Left Lane: Mike Berry Runs 7.495/176.81, Now #8
Right Lane: Bailey Whitaker Runs 7.167/181.69, Now #4

Left Lane: Junior Pippin Runs 7.240/183.87, Now #6
Right Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 7.150/185.33, Now #3
Johnson needs some points to get in the hunt for the Top Ten. He gets a good start with a strong pass into the current #3 spot.

Pippin has been strong lately and makes another strong pass.
Left Lane: Karen Stoffer No Time, Now #17
Right Lane: Shawn Gann No Time, Now #16
DQ for both as Gann drifts over and nails both reflectors just before Stoffer got there.

Too bad as both bikes were on Killer passes. The best of the session, so far.

Karen Stoffer's incremental times: 60ft-1.056 sec., 330ft-2.885, 660ft-4.459/155.06 mph, 1,000ft-5.841.
Shawn Gann's incremental times: 60ft-1.075 sec., 330ft-2.911, 660ft-4.478/156.50 mph, 1,000ft-5.851.
Left Lane: Michael Phillips Runs 7.023/191.46, Now #1
Right Lane: Matt Guidera Runs 7.069/185.66, Now #3
...and the hits keep coming.

Both bikes make straight and clean passes into the top of field for now.

Michael Phillips' incremental times: 60ft-1.079 sec., 330ft-2.919, 660ft-4.484/156.41 mph, 1,000ft-5.852.
Matt Guidera's incremental times: 60ft-1.054 sec., 330ft-2.884, 660ft-4.465/154.37 mph, 1,000ft-5.865.
Left Lane: Craig Treble Runs 7.111/186.69, Now #5
Right Lane: Douglas Horne Runs 7.087/186.92, Now #4
More top quarter of the field performance and the bump moves again.
Left Lane: Matt Smith Runs 7.018/190.65, Now #2
Right Lane: Hector Arana Runs 6.985/190.30, Now #1
Looks like the Larry Morgan influence continues to stay in the Arana camp.

Big numbers for both bikes and the new top spots.

Matt Smith's incremental times: 60ft-1.078 sec., 330ft-2.906, 660ft-4.472/156.37 mph, 1,000ft-5.843.
Hector Arana's incremental times: 60ft-1.063 sec., 330ft-2.884, 660ft-4.442/156.88 mph, 1,000ft-5.810.
Left Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 6.989/190.75, Now #2
Right Lane: Eddie Krawiec Runs 7.054/185.84, Now #5
Great pass for Hines, but not quite enough to bump Arana off the top spot.

The other HD, Krawiec, was quicker to half track and then had to watch the top spot elude him.

6:23 p.m. Hector Arana is #1 at 6.985 and Angie McBride is on the bump spot at 7.157.

Results for Qualifying Round 2
CLERMONT, Ind. - INDY - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Matt Smith Runs 6.968/190.57, Now #1
Best prior run: 7.018/190.65, Was #3
Right Lane: Karen Stoffer Runs 7.023/186.30, Now #5
                                  No Prior Run
1:44 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 79 degrees, relative humidity 44 percent, barometer 29.28 inches, adjusted altitude 2,705 feet, track temperature 104 degrees.

In the luck of the points gained throughout the year, we have a pair of the four cylinder bikes against each other. One of the bikes was spinning hard as I heard it land on the limiter in first gear. Smith unloads the pass he's been looking for.

Left Lane: Eddie Krawiec Runs 7.056/184.42, Now #6
Best prior run: 7.054/185.84, Was #6
Right Lane: Craig Treble Runs 7.104/188.49, Now #10
Best prior run: 7.111/186.69, Was #10
Krawiec simply dominates this pair. In rounded numbers, Treble trailed by .03, .07, .08, and .05 at each timing interval.
Left Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 6.973/192.38, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.989/190.75, Was #3
Right Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 7.016/187.91, Now #4
Best prior run: 7.150/185.33, Was #12
Left Lane: Hector Arana Runs 6.936/191.89, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.985/190.30, Was #3
Right Lane: Matt Guidera Runs 7.037/184.85, Now #7
Best prior run: 7.069/185.66, Was #9
Arana shows the big power he has, and he's been telling everybody who will listen how much Larry Morgan helped step him up. It's great to see such a great guy who's worked very hard over the years finally get to the top.
Right Lane: Wesley Wells Runs 7.118/183.00, Now #12
                                  No Prior Run
Left Lane: LE Tonglet Runs 7.118/183.64, Now #13
Best prior run: 11.515/69.02, Was #24
Right Lane: Shawn Gann Runs 6.979/189.66, Now #4
                                  No Prior Run
The twins are liking the weather here.
Left Lane: Katie Sullivan Runs 7.255/180.36, Now #21
Best prior run: 7.594/174.66, Was #23
Right Lane: GT Tonglet Runs 7.196/183.69, Now #18
Best prior run: 7.809/133.39, Was #25
Once again, we hear a rider struggling to get into second quickly enough. It seems to be a very fine line here for the motorcycles, either spinning hard or getting good traction and driving hard to 330.
Left Lane: Mike Berry Runs 7.265/177.74, Now #22
Best prior run: 7.495/176.81, Was #24
Right Lane: Geoff Godfrey Runs 7.795/162.49, Now #25
Best prior run: 7.752/164.25, Was #25
Craig Treble is on the bump spot at 7.104.

Godfrey rode first gear for a long time and won't make the show.
Left Lane: Junior Pippin Runs 7.252/178.40, Now #19
Best prior run: 7.240/183.87, Was #19
Right Lane: Redell Harris Runs 13.937/54.51, Now #24
Best prior run: 7.424/147.47, Was #24
Harris has problems before 330 and sits up to coast through. Pippin is looking to repeat his breakthrough performance in the last race.
Left Lane: Angie McBride Runs 7.131/183.27, Now #15
Best prior run: 7.157/184.22, Was #16
Right Lane: David Hope Runs 7.140/182.23, Now #17
Best prior run: 7.405/179.02, Was #23
Angie gets really close, with Hope right behind her. The track looks like it's plenty good for the bikes as I haven't noticed any weird gymnastics or riders hanging off trying to go straight. This is pretty much a point and shoot deal.
Left Lane: Jim Underdahl Runs 7.140/183.07, Now #16
Best prior run: 7.140/185.74, Was #16
Right Lane: Joe DeSantis Runs 7.176/185.69, Now #19
Best prior run: 7.249/184.37, Was #21
DeSantis spins hard.

Craig Treble is still on the bump spot at 7.104.
Left Lane: Chip Ellis Runs 7.028/187.47, Now #8
Best prior run: 7.056/186.38, Was #10
Right Lane: Bailey Whitaker Runs 7.066/186.54, Now #11
Best prior run: 7.167/181.69, Was #18
Chip Ellis is using Vance & Hines power this weekend. He steps up nicely in a session where most aren't gaining. Whitaker does an even better job.
Left Lane: Michael Phillips Runs 7.088/189.66, Now #6
Best prior run: 7.023/191.46, Was #6
Right Lane: Douglas Horne Runs 7.114/187.13, Now #12
Best prior run: 7.087/186.92, Was #12
Phillips did a really nice job of getting his bike straight in the groove as it took off on him in first & second and moved to the left.

Right Lane: Matt Smith Runs 7.015/189.18, Now #3

Left Lane: Redell Harris Runs 7.167/183.02, Now #18
Best prior run: 7.424/147.47, Was #23
Redell didn't seem to get entirely on the chip before he left but still picks up a bunch. He'll still have to try to bump into the field.
Left Lane: Geoff Godfrey Runs 7.911/163.28, Now #24
Best prior run: 7.752/164.25, Was #24
The Kaw sounded good in the first two gears but it headly strongly left. From third gear on, Godfrey was hanging off and feathering the throttle just to get bike off the wall.
Left Lane: GT Tonglet Runs 7.866/129.38, Now #20
Best prior run: 7.196/183.69, Was #20
GT also sounded good on the bottom with a very quick first and second. I didn't hear the shift to fourth and Tonglet is off the power before the finish line.

Best prior run: 6.979/189.66, Was #4

4:08 p.m.

We've had a rain delay lasting a bit over four hours, and the schedule has been shuffled, reshuffled, sliced, and diced. In order to get things somewhat back on track we're going to lead off with the 4th Pro session which will be the final one.

It's do or die for anyone not in the program and those racers below the 12th spot are starting fresh with no previous times to fall back on. When the rain stopped, it apppeared that things were going to get hot and steamy, but the air is drying and the air is cooler.

Weather conditions: air temperature 77 degrees, relative humidity 57 percent, barometer 29.21 inches, adjusted altitude 2,748 feet, track temperature 97 degrees. Good, straight runs for both drivers with decent short times so the green track appears ready to go.
Left Lane: Geoff Godfrey Runs 7.549/166.99, Now #14
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Katie Sullivan Runs 7.324/169.51, Now #13
                                  No Prior Run
Lots of spin off the line for both bikes as both riders struggled to keep up with the soaring rpms.
Right Lane: Mike Berry Runs 7.192/181.30, Now #13
                                  No Prior Run

                                  No Prior Run
Nice passes on both sides. They're in the order for now.
Left Lane: Joe DeSantis Runs 7.123/185.64, Now #16
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Craig Treble Runs 7.059/187.99, Now #11
                                  No Prior Run
Treble gets off the line pretty well but DeSantis doesn't.

Joe DeSantis' incremental times: 60ft-1.110 sec., 330ft-2.971, 660ft-4.541/155.78 mph, 1,000ft-5.924.
Craig Treble's incremental times: 60ft-1.082 sec., 330ft-2.919, 660ft-4.493/155.65 mph, 1,000ft-5.872.

Left Lane: Redell Harris Runs 7.211/183.12, Now #19

                                  No Prior Run
That's a really good looking pass for Underdahl. He goes into the 11th spot.

David Hope is on the bump spot at 7.087.
Left Lane: Douglas Horne Runs 7.020/188.94, Now #8
Best prior run: 7.087/186.92, Was #15
Right Lane: Angie McBride Runs 7.063/186.54, Now #14
                                  No Prior Run
Angie had a very good front half but Horne goes roaring by on the other end. She's looking much more relaxed on the bike as she isn't having to fight it to stay in the groove.

Douglas Horne's incremental times: 60ft-1.091 sec., 330ft-2.915, 660ft-4.471/157.03 mph, 1,000ft-5.839.
Angie McBride's incremental times: 60ft-1.065 sec., 330ft-2.886, 660ft-4.480/154.26 mph, 1,000ft-5.867.
Left Lane: Wesley Wells Runs 7.045/187.73, Now #12
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Michael Phillips Runs 6.971/191.57, Now #4
Best prior run: 7.023/191.46, Was #9
Bailey Whitaker is on the bump spot at 7.066.

That's a prime time pass for Phillips as he goes deep into the top half. Wells gets in with room to spare.
Left Lane: Hector Arana Runs 7.010/190.67, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.936/191.89, Was #1
Right Lane: LE Tonglet Runs 7.028/186.64, Now #6
Best prior run: 7.015/186.77, Was #6
Two great passes that looked quicker than they were.
Left Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 7.014/188.54, Now #6
Best prior run: 7.016/187.91, Was #7
Right Lane: Matt Smith Runs 6.918/192.38, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.968/190.57, Was #3
Johnson does a nice job of being consistently quick, but Smith wows the crowd with a great run in the DSR Suzuki and takes over the top spot.

Steve Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.072 sec., 330ft-2.902, 660ft-4.464/156.86 mph, 1,000ft-5.832.
Matt Smith's incremental times: 60ft-1.061 sec., 330ft-2.863, 660ft-4.406/158.78 mph, 1,000ft-5.757.

Left Lane: Eddie Krawiec Runs 7.051/190.43, Now #8
Best prior run: 7.018/188.57, Was #8
Right Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 7.066/190.73, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.957/192.66, Was #3
Team mates on the line, and they both have problems getting off the starting line compared with the quicker bikes this session.

Two good passes, but neither move in the order and Matt Smith holds on to the top spot.

Stay with me on this: In the 2009 Countdown to 1, it's a complex number of possibilities for the final position in the top ten:

Steve Johnson enters Monday with the 10th playoff spot based on the fact that he owns the tie-breaker based on the first tie-breaker, round wins.

Phillips clinches if he wins his R1 race OR if any one of Gann, Stoffer or Steve Johnson loses R1;

Gann clinches if two of the three riders behind him (SJ, Stoffer, Pippin) lose in R1 OR if he wins and either Steve Johnson or Karen Stoffer loses;

Steve Johnson clinches if Karen Stoffer and Junior Pippin lose OR if he wins and any two of these three riders (Gann, Stoffer, Pippin) lose in R1.

Karen Stoffer clinches in R1 if she wins and two of these three (Pippin, Steve Johnson, Shawn Gann) lose.

Krawiec is 4 - 0 against Horne in prior events.

Horne is away first and steals the win with a better RT.

It's a close race at the finish line. Douglas Horne's incremental margins: 60ft(0.027), 330 ft(0.030), 660ft(0.026), 1,000ft(0.017). MOV: 0.0095 seconds (approximately 3 feet).
