Results for Qualifying Round 1
CLERMONT, Ind. - INDY - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Right Lane: Kate Harker Runs 16.761/57.08, Now #1
1:55 p.m.

Weather conditions: air temperature 83 degrees, relative humidity 42 percent, barometer 29.18 inches, adjusted altitude 3,111 feet, track temperature 104 degrees.

Kate Harker doesn't move 3 feet before the slicks explode into smoke. She responded immediately and stepped off the throttle.

Left Lane: Diana Harker Runs 5.626/240.34, Now #1
Right Lane: T. Johnson Jr. Runs 5.630/242.36, Now #2
It's really good to see this name appearing on my monitor. It's been way too long since TJ jr has raced.

Nice passes for both cars, as they run side by side the entire length.
Left Lane: Noah Condo Runs 5.501/268.33, Now #1
Right Lane: Dave Weber Runs 7.532/112.06, Now #4
Weber has a very unusual-looking bugcatcher perched atop the blower.

Condo's car tends to the left and moves toward the wall, but he manages to get to the finish line without incident.

Weber had a good leave but as the car moved through first gear the tire began to quiver and finally let go with full blown shake. He steps off before the shift.
Left Lane: Mike Lewis Runs 5.276/262.08, Now #1
Right Lane: Art Trautman Runs 6.157/182.23, Now #5
Trautman has problems with the burnout and doesn't really turn the tires at all.

That's a career best for Lewis. A lot of people throw rocks at drag racing executives for being isolated from racing, but Mike's proving the exception. Team manager for DSR during the week, #1 qualifier at Indy. Not too shabby.

Trautman's car never really builts the rpms as it goes downtrack. We see light smoke as the car moves from half track to the finish line. Nothing on the track, so we move to the next pair.
Left Lane: Tim Bowgren No Time, Now #9
Right Lane: Brian Mans Runs 6.712/146.59, Now #6
Mans' crew looks sharp in their black and yellow uniforms.

Bowgren stages but doesn't move when the tree comes down.

Mans gets almost to half track before we hear the rpms rise from wheel spin. He pedals once, then twice. After the second blip we hear a pop and the run is over at that point.
Left Lane: Brandon Booher Runs 5.543/253.95, Now #4
Right Lane: Darryl Hitchman Runs 5.498/266.85, Now #2
Good hits for both racers. Hitchman's car rolled and turned off the top bulb just before the green so he was staged very deep.
Left Lane: Jared Dreher Runs 5.520/256.89, Now #4
Right Lane: Doug Hegge Runs 5.616/252.66, Now #6
Hegge's car looked very lazy off the line, even for a fuel car. He still cards a very respectable time and slots into the 6th position.
Left Lane: Rich McPhillips Runs 5.673/249.44, Now #9
Right Lane: Brittany Force Runs 12.490/63.80, Now #13
McPhillips lays down a very good baseline pass.

Force jerks the front tires up and when they land the rear slicks go into total smoke. She didn't move 10 feet before the run was over.
Left Lane: Dave Hirata Runs 5.401/262.08, Now #2
Right Lane: Malcolm Wahle Runs 5.520/244.47, Now #6
There's a real contrast in styles as Wahle makes a long, loud, smoky burnout and Hirata simply makes sure his tires are clean with a small squirt.

Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 5.809/253.28, Now #13
Right Lane: Darren Nicholson Runs 5.424/260.76, Now #3
Nicholson looks pretty good in going into the third spot. Force drives through some shake but gets the job done.
Left Lane: Robin Samsel Runs 5.463/259.41, Now #4
Right Lane: Marty Thacker Runs 5.511/264.03, Now #7
Left Lane: Ken Perry Runs 5.369/263.05, Now #2
Right Lane: Michael Manners Runs 15.947/53.56, Now #21
Going in to this pairing, Art Trautman is on the bump spot at 6.157.

Manners goes up in smoke immediately. Perry goes next to the top.
Left Lane: Chris Demke Runs 5.384/263.20, Now #3
Right Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.411/264.60, Now #5
Left Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 5.336/267.75, Now #3
Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.325/264.23, Now #2
There's a scattered crowd here today. It's a shame the stands aren't full to watch a pair such as this one. #1 VS. #2 - that's as good as it gets.

It's a good race but neither car can catch Lewis.

After the first round of qualifying, Mike Lewis leads all competitors with Doug Hegge on the bump.

Results for Qualifying Round 3
CLERMONT, Ind. - INDY - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Right Lane: Malcolm Wahle Runs 6.408/234.33, Now #21
Best prior run: 5.520/244.47, Was #21
4:58 p.m.

As the third session opens, the sky once again is overcast which should allow the track to cool back down into optimum conditions. It's still remarkably mild for Indy on Labor Day and I don't think anyone is complaining at this point.

Tim Bowgren is on the bump spot at 5.466.

Wahle goes into instant smoke. He pedals once and after a bit of coasting the car hooks up but still doesn't recover quickly enough to get into the program. There was a flash from the right bank when he got back on the throttle.
Left Lane: Diana Harker Runs 6.147/249.86, Now #25
Best prior run: 5.626/240.34, Was #25
Right Lane: Brian Mans Runs 5.939/247.16, Now #26
Best prior run: 6.712/146.59, Was #27
Harker was first to start her car but before any tuning could be done we get the signal for her to shut off. There are people over the wall all down the track though at this point no one has called out that there's oil on the track.

We're thinking that the previous run put some fuel on the track as we simply wait a bit with no equipment moving onto the track.

After a few minutes, we get the signal to re-fire the cars.

Harker would very much like to lay down a good pass and join her sister in the order.

It's not going to happen as both drivers are pedalling all the way to 330. Both get their cars settled down and drive to the finish line but any chance of qualifying is lost.
Right Lane: Art Trautman Runs 5.988/209.23, Now #27
Best prior run: 6.061/211.43, Was #27
Booher doesn't make the call after doing his motorcycle impression in the previous round.

Trautman drops a cylinder or two on the way down and just before the finish line there's a big cloud of raw fuel. He gets into the fives but doesn't move up in the order.
Right Lane: Darren Nicholson Runs 6.012/170.77, Now #15
Best prior run: 5.424/260.76, Was #15
That was a pretty decent looking run with just a bit of shake at the top of first. It's still going straight but we hear the engine shut off right where high gear would have been.
Left Lane: Jared Dreher Runs 5.601/254.86, Now #21
Best prior run: 5.520/256.89, Was #20
Right Lane: Dave Weber Runs 5.501/260.26, Now #20
Best prior run: 5.615/257.97, Was #24
Tim Bowgren still holds the bump spot at 5.466. If Dreher wants to get in, he's going to have to run quicker than any other of his runs this year. Same thing applies to Weber, but it would have to be a career best.

Weber gets really close to that career best but doesn't get in the show.
Left Lane: Tim Bowgren Runs 5.545/254.52, Now #16
Best prior run: 5.466/254.66, Was #16
Right Lane: Darryl Hitchman Runs 5.710/258.12, Now #19
Best prior run: 5.498/266.85, Was #19
Hitchman is spitting fuel out the right bank the entire trip down. Bowgren can't manage to get off the bump.
Left Lane: Dave Hirata Runs 5.413/260.91, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.401/262.08, Was #10
Right Lane: Doug Hegge Runs 10.193/99.76, Now #24
Best prior run: 5.545/258.67, Was #24
No help for Hirata, and Hegge is up in smoke before 30 feet.
Left Lane: Rich McPhillips Runs 5.535/250.51, Now #14
Best prior run: 5.413/256.60, Was #14
Right Lane: T. Johnson Jr. Runs 5.472/235.02, Now #17
Best prior run: 5.494/249.58, Was #18
McPhillips drops a part at half track while TJ goes to the stripe with no visible problems. Johnson gets really close but still sits on the outside looking in.
Left Lane: Robin Samsel Runs 5.379/254.42, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.411/257.63, Was #13
Right Lane: Michael Manners Runs 5.310/260.66, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.489/265.06, Was #18
Manners is the first car to bump into the field and does it in style as he goes all the way to the 4th spot. Samsel improves by .04 and gets into the top half.
Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 5.708/255.92, Now #14
Best prior run: 5.402/265.06, Was #13
Right Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.334/269.73, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.411/264.60, Was #14
Force puts a cylinder out early in the run. Shields looks great as he moves all the way to 6th.
Left Lane: Noah Condo Runs 5.426/271.13, Now #12
Best prior run: 5.394/264.91, Was #12
Right Lane: Brittany Force Runs 5.685/255.29, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.382/263.87, Was #10
Darren Nicholson is on the bump spot at 5.424 and all the cars that could bump him have already run.
Left Lane: Mike Lewis Runs 5.416/260.16, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.276/262.08, Was #2
Right Lane: Marty Thacker Runs 8.358/120.91, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.362/268.22, Was #8
Thacker overpowers the tires and clicks it off when the car moves toward the wall.
Left Lane: Ken Perry Runs 5.355/263.62, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.357/264.70, Was #7
Right Lane: Kate Harker Runs 5.902/244.21, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.318/270.70, Was #5
No help for either car. Harker had some random squirts out the left bank until the top end when most of the spark plugs gave up.
Left Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 5.328/269.03, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.268/271.08, Was #1
Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.276/267.69, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.300/267.37, Was #3
It's the last pair for a session that didn't help too many racers improve their lot. Reichert show he has some more tricks before you count him out.
