Results for Qualifying Round 1
CLERMONT, Ind. - INDY - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Rick Cortino Runs 7.282/137.22, Now #2
Right Lane: John Hart Runs 5.783/246.39, Now #1
1:20 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 79 degrees, relative humidity 49 percent, barometer 29.20 inches, adjusted altitude 2,770 feet, track temperature 102 degrees.

The first pair of the Loud Cars comes to the line.

Cortin was off the line first and they ran mostly side by side to just past half track where he slowed.

Hart's Charger was hugging the wall for a while until he drove it back in to the center.

Left Lane: Kevin Newburgh Runs 6.601/119.20, Now #3
Right Lane: Jason McKnight Runs 6.108/239.02, Now #2
Two broken runs.

McKnight's car was pouring out clutch dust off the line and down the track.

Newburgh was running close to Hart's incrementals until half track where the chutes came out.
Left Lane: Jeff Burnett Runs 5.885/210.73, Now #2
Right Lane: Tim Stevens Runs 8.758/99.96, Now #6
Stevens FC left well, but started to tail wag just before the 330 cone and he had to lift.

Burnett made his pass without incident or drama.
Right Lane: John Bojec Runs 24.492/34.67, Now #7
Butler was supposed to be in the left lane, but couldn't make the call for Q1, as they towed the car out of staging and back to the pits.

Bojec was #5 in Div. 3 last year, but he'll have to join Butler in round two to get a full pull. He smokes the tires big time at the hit and coasts on down.
Left Lane: Brian Harvanek No Time, Now #10
Right Lane: Fred Hagen Jr. Runs 6.182/222.88, Now #4
Ouch! Harvanek joins the No Joy Club, as the engine goes quiet in the burnout.

Problems continue for the TAFC's, as Hagen's car doesn't shift and he over-revs the engine. Sounded terrible!
Left Lane: Steve Burck No Time, Now #12
Right Lane: Alexis De Joria Runs 5.716/252.57, Now #1
This may be the first qualifying pass on DeJoria's new TAFC after a bad crash earlier this year at Englishtown.

Burck is in front from start to finish until the car drifts over and punches the center line cone at the 1000' mark.

Clean pass for de Joria into the new #1 spot.

Steve Burck's incremental times: 60ft-0.976 sec., 330ft-2.530, 660ft-3.753/201.91 mph, 1,000ft-4.826.
Alexis De Joria's incremental times: 60ft-0.986 sec., 330ft-2.552, 660ft-3.782/201.61 mph, 1,000ft-4.827.
Left Lane: Bobby Martin Runs 5.747/253.37, Now #3
Right Lane: Vern Moats Runs 5.687/253.14, Now #1
Two great looking passes and they take over the new #1 and #3 positions for now.
Left Lane: Ken Webster Runs 5.737/253.61, Now #4
Right Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 5.689/253.33, Now #2
Ferro was number nine in the world last year.

The two Monte Carlos leave together and run side by side to the 330' mark Ferro starts to pull ahead at that point to capture the current #2 spot on the ladder.

Webster has been having a good year in Div. 6 this year and makes a clean and straight pass to the current #4 spot.
Left Lane: Steve Harker Runs 5.588/255.77, Now #2
Right Lane: Mick Snyder Runs 5.586/256.65, Now #1
OK! What a great side by side run from start to finish with almost no difference at each of the incrementals. This would have been a great final round race.

Steve Harker's incremental times: 60ft-0.947 sec., 330ft-2.479, 660ft-3.684/205.07 mph, 1,000ft-4.713.
Mick Snyder's incremental times: 60ft-0.948 sec., 330ft-2.480, 660ft-3.683/206.04 mph, 1,000ft-4.711.
Left Lane: Chris Foster Runs 5.661/252.71, Now #3
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.672/252.80, Now #4
Good looking passes to a point, but both cars move around their lanes getting to the finish line.

They slip into the field right behind the last pair of FC's.
Right Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.581/259.96, Now #1
The Big Dog in TAFC, Manzo, will get the single to wrap up the round.

He makes a near perfect pass to push the whole field down a spot and will be the round one leader.

No drama, no moving around, just big power to the track!

Frank Manzo's incremental times: 60ft-0.962 sec., 330ft-2.496, 660ft-3.694/207.78 mph, 1,000ft-4.715.

1:54 p.m. Rick Cortino is on the bump spot at 7.282.

Stevens team starts the engine and then they shut it off. Butler will get the single.

No joy, as the big slicks are up in smoke instantly.

Looks like more sprinkles, as Rick Stewart is kneeling in the left lane by the starting lights checking out the track.
Left Lane: Jason McKnight Runs 5.810/252.28, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.108/239.02, Was #16

4:43 p.m. Just a brief delay for the moisture to percolate off.

Left Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 5.608/255.00, Now #4

A bunch of shake for Newburgh. He picks up a bunch, but not enough to get into the field.

Left Lane: Vern Moats Runs 28.008/21.82, Now #9

Burck is knocking on the door for the top sixteen spots. He did well on the tune up and jumped well into the field with a nice looking pass.

DeJoria pass didn't look as good, but she ran clean into the top half of the field.

Steve Burck's incremental times: 60ft-0.959 sec., 330ft-2.501, 660ft-3.720/202.97 mph, 1,000ft-4.766.
Alexis De Joria's incremental times: 60ft-0.975 sec., 330ft-2.517, 660ft-3.728/204.39 mph, 1,000ft-4.761.
Left Lane: Jeff Burnett Runs 5.715/243.06, Now #15
Best prior run: 5.862/212.06, Was #19
Right Lane: Jason McKnight Runs 5.707/256.11, Now #14
Best prior run: 5.810/252.28, Was #18
Tim Stevens is on the bump spot at 5.783, but not for long.

McKeight was away first and stayed there right down the track.

Both cars slide into the bottom of the field.
Left Lane: Brian Harvanek Runs 5.784/247.93, Now #17
Best prior run: 5.720/250.18, Was #17
Right Lane: John Hart No Time, Now #19
Best prior run: 5.783/246.39, Was #19
Ken Webster is on the bump spot at 5.716.

Hart's car shakes, shimmies, and goes silent.

Harvanek has a clean pass, but slowed a little from his prior best.
Left Lane: Ken Webster Runs 6.886/143.89, Now #16
Best prior run: 5.716/251.20, Was #16
Right Lane: Mick Snyder Runs 5.586/259.21, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.586/256.65, Was #3
12:26 p.m. We have a brief delay to get Hart's car off of the track. Ken Webster is on the bump spot at 5.716 and will stay there as the rest of the cars yet to qualify are already in the field.

It's a good thing too, as Webster's blower decided to go BANG and launch the burst panel in to the air. He had better incremental than Snyder until then.

Snyder repeats on his ET with a clean pass to stay #3.

Ken Webster's incremental times: 60ft-0.955 sec., 330ft-2.497, 660ft-3.908/157.03 mph, 1,000ft-5.407.
Mick Snyder's incremental times: 60ft-0.975 sec., 330ft-2.498, 660ft-3.696/206.76 mph, 1,000ft-4.718.
Left Lane: Chris Foster No Time, Now #12
Best prior run: 5.661/252.71, Was #12
Right Lane: John Bojec Runs 18.008/42.99, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.658/247.75, Was #11
Foster's crew is franticly trying to get the Monte Carlo started, but run out of time. They pull the car off the grid and back to the pits.

Bojec has his own problems, as the car is slow off the line and then zings the tires. He lifts and coasts on down.
Left Lane: Bobby Martin Runs 5.570/259.16, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.635/257.28, Was #8
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.608/257.04, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.650/251.58, Was #9
The two middle of the field qualifiers meet and if nothing changes would be a matchup for round one.

But things do change, a bunch!

Stellar 0.951 sixtyfoot time is parlayed into a stout 5.570 ET. Great looking pass.

Barton was right behind him with a clean pass too and moves into the top half of the field.

Bobby Martin's incremental times: 60ft-0.951 sec., 330ft-2.479, 660ft-3.677/207.34 mph, 1,000ft-4.702.

Left Lane: Roger Bateman Runs 5.667/256.99, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.620/254.86, Was #7
Right Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 5.651/249.49, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.608/255.00, Was #6
Both cars get down the track without any drama, but can't improve to end the session.

12:36 p.m. Bobby Martin is number one at 5.570 and Ken Webster is on the bump spot at 5.716.

Results for Elimination Round 1
CLERMONT, Ind. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Frank Manzo (Lucas Motor Oil Monte Carlo) 0.080 5.580 258.37
 (L) Jason McKnight (Impala) 0.114 5.794 251.25
7:59 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 65 percent, barometer 29.20 inches, adjusted altitude 2,687 feet, track temperature 84 degrees.

Number one in the world faces his 198th driver in the other lane.

Manzo is away first by a bunch and pull steadily ahead to improve on his qualifying times with a huge finish line advantage.

McKeinght can't match his qualifying times.

Frank Manzo's incremental times: 60ft-0.953 sec., 330ft-2.485, 660ft-3.685/207.24 mph, 1,000ft-4.711.

 (W) Mickey Ferro (Ryco Hydraulics Monte Carlo) 0.046 5.650 247.93
 (L) John Bojec (PAC Racing Springs Monte Carlo) 0.054 6.270 190.16
Bojec's car shakes and rattles and then moves towards the center line. He horses it a little too hard back to the right and nearly clouts the wall before lifting.

Ferro was away first and runs close to his best times with no drama.

 (W) Bobby Martin (Lane Automotive Charger) 0.050 5.634 257.73
 (L) Ken Webster (Synoil Fluids Racing Monte Car 0.040 5.702 251.63
Great side by side race and both cars were almost even at the 330' lights. Martin gets on by and pulls steadily ahead to take a little over a car length victory.

Bobby Martin's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.027), 330 ft(-0.003), 660ft(0.018), 1,000ft(0.039). MOV: 0.0583 seconds (approximately 22 feet).

 (W) Steve Harker (Monte Carlo) 0.076 5.613 249.39
 (L) Jeff Burnett (Mustang) 0.084 5.883 199.79
...and the hits keep coming with two more side by side FC's until near the lights, where they both slow. Harker was well out in front and had the momentum to take the win.
 (W) Chris Foster (Foster Racing Monte Carlo) 0.131 5.702 238.98
 (L) Tony Bartone (Centre Pointe Collision Ford 0.074 5.800 233.52
Foster was way late and looked to be a sitting duck. He hung with it and finally drove on by at the lights, when Barton slowed.

Chris Foster's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.077), 330 ft(-0.094), 660ft(-0.069), 1,000ft(-0.012). MOV: 0.0415 seconds (approximately 14 feet).

Tony Bartone's incremental times: 60ft-0.965 sec., 330ft-2.495, 660ft-3.741/195.11 mph, 1,000ft-4.844.
Chris Foster's incremental times: 60ft-0.985 sec., 330ft-2.532, 660ft-3.753/202.58 mph, 1,000ft-4.799.

 (W) Roger Bateman (DocsHoliday.com Mustang) 0.068 5.603 253.42
 (L) Brian Harvanek (All Time Trucking Camaro) 0.062 5.762 247.11
Harvanek come in as an alternate and gives Bateman a run for his money for a while. He gets a small advantage off the line and is just bearily ahead at the sixtyfoot mark.

Bateman shows some more power and improves on his qualifying times in taking the easy win. Roger Bateman's incremental margins: 60ft(0.001), 330 ft(0.048), 660ft(0.091), 1,000ft(0.128). MOV: 0.1536 seconds (approximately 56 feet).

 (W) Alexis De Joria (Tequila Patron Mustang) 0.106 5.668 252.00
 (L) Fred Hagen Jr. (Dark Horse Mustang) 0.134 5.713 255.82
These two qualified within a hundredth of each other. Two bad RT's and DeJoria had the better performance this time to stay ahead all the way down the track for the win.
 (W) Vern Moats (Kendall Motor Oil Mustang) 0.098 5.640 256.84
 (L) Mick Snyder (Powersource Transportation Mus -0.008(R) 5.578 255.48
Last pair of the round come to the line. Snyder was #6 last year and Moats is the senior spokesman for TAFC at 67.

It's all over immediately, as Snyder throws away quickest pass of the round with a -0.008 red light.

8:21 p.m. In round two: Martin will have lane choice over DeJoria;Moats over Foster; Bateman over Harker; and Manzo over Ferro.

Results for Elimination Round 2
CLERMONT, Ind. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Vern Moats (Kendall Motor Oil Mustang) 0.066 5.694 252.66
 (L) Chris Foster (Foster Racing Monte Carlo) 0.106 5.783 251.53
12:32 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 67 percent, barometer 29.16 inches, adjusted altitude 2,621 feet, track temperature 94 degrees.

Moats led this one wire-to-wire, pulling away on the top end.

 (W) Bobby Martin (Lane Automotive Charger) 0.060 5.639 256.65
 (L) Alexis De Joria (Tequila Patron Mustang) 0.028 5.694 254.52
De Joria had a great light, but Martin managed to edge ahead before half track and extend the lead on the top end. It was close...Bobby Martin's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.003), 330 ft(-0.005), 660ft(0.009), 1,000ft(0.016). MOV: 0.0231 seconds (approximately 9 feet). Martin will have lane choice against Moats in the semifinals.
 (W) Steve Harker (Monte Carlo) 0.072 5.602 255.97
 (L) Roger Bateman (DocsHoliday.com Mustang) 0.058 5.622 249.35
This is a great matchup, two of the top four in 2008 facing off at Indy - but first, a little "cleanup in aisle 13," one of the previous pair leaving a little stuff at the turnoff.

This was just plain good drag racing, Bateman with a small edge at the green and Harker with the muscle to run him down in the lights. Harker trailed all the way - except where it counts, at the stripe. Steve Harker's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.008), 330 ft(-0.016), 660ft(-0.020), 1,000ft(-0.013). MOV: 0.0063 seconds (approximately 2 feet).

 (W) Frank Manzo (Lucas Motor Oil Monte Carlo) 0.067 5.593 259.11
 (L) Mickey Ferro (Ryco Hydraulics Monte Carlo) 0.057 5.608 254.62
A couple of the best from Division 1 faced off in this final pair...and it was another great drag race. Again, Ferro had a small advantage at the green and made an excellent run, but Manzo had the muscle to run him down, again in the lights. Frank Manzo's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.020), 330 ft(-0.028), 660ft(-0.021), 1,000ft(-0.008). MOV: 0.0057 seconds (approximately 2 feet). Manzo will have lane choice against Harker in the semifinals.

Looks like Moats can't make the call. Martin gets the single into the finals.

 (W) Steve Harker (Monte Carlo) 0.018 5.613 256.21
 (L) Frank Manzo (Lucas Motor Oil Monte Carlo) 0.087 5.571 259.76
Manzo is 11 - 0 against Harker in prior events.

Upset Alert!

Harker takes it to him big time with a big hole shot off the line to take a decisive half of a car length win. He will have lane choice over Martin.

Steve Harker's incremental margins: 60ft(0.052), 330 ft(0.049), 660ft(0.044), 1,000ft(0.037). MOV: 0.0271 seconds (approximately 10 feet).
