Results for Qualifying Round 1
CLERMONT, Ind. - INDY - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Ron August Runs 7.214/118.44, Now #2
Right Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 3.931/307.02, Now #1
8:43 p.m.

This is August's first hit in Top Fuel competition, though he has plenty of experience in various California rides.

Both racers post career best ETs. Litton raises the blood pressure a bit as he is very late with the chutes. He has no problem stopping and we move on to the next pair.

August's header flames went out just past half track.
Left Lane: T.J. Zizzo Runs 7.264/87.81, Now #3
Right Lane: Pat Dakin Runs 7.479/93.13, Now #4
Both cars left well, but Zizzo spit some sparks out the left bank just before the flames went out.

Dakin was doing pretty much the same thing in the right lane.

They were decent 330' squirts, but the fuses will have to be lengthened.
Left Lane: Luigi Novelli Runs 5.413/121.01, Now #2
Right Lane: David Grubnic Runs 6.590/96.60, Now #3
Both cars make it almost to half track before the tires let go. We see a brief flash of flame from under Novelli's car which goes out quickly.

We've got trucks working in the left lane. It's a big one, folks.
Left Lane: Rod Fuller Runs 3.888/310.63, Now #1
Right Lane: C. Karamesines Runs 4.169/234.94, Now #3
9:41 p.m.

To say the least, that was a major oildown. We've used a lot of time and most of the oildry in the free world. But, finally, we fire the next pair. It's good to see Fuller back in the Caterpillar car. The guy adds a bunch to the class. Fuller checks out the lane the Safety Safari just worked on and finds it just fine. That was a really nice pass with strong flames and no wasted motion.

The Greek has a good front half but the flames start mixing up and he's coasting well before the finish line.
Left Lane: Del Cox Jr Runs 4.123/248.48, Now #4
Right Lane: Troy Buff Runs 4.122/224.92, Now #3
Both cars leave way early but do get an elapsed time. Cox was -.360 and Buff was -.144.

I'm surprised that the runs were so close at the other end because Cox looked a lot better. Buff began smoking heavily about 900 feet and it looked like the flames went out before the finish line. Even so, he runs a thou quicker than Cox.
Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 4.799/150.93, Now #6
Right Lane: Joe Hartley No Time, Now #12
Hartley hammers the tires in the first 20 feet. Haddock got a couple hundred feet before it happened to him.
Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.308/201.46, Now #6
Right Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.872/150.75, Now #8
Kalitta and Millican leave together but Kalitta pedals first at about 400 feet. Millican got a few hundred feet further, pedalled once and then gave it up when the tires wouldn't recover. Kalitta tried a couple more slaps but they didn't settle the car down.
Left Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 17.097/68.55, Now #15
Right Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 5.024/137.13, Now #9
That was a strange one. One of the cars double-stepped just as the light turned green. I could have sworn it was Massey but his numbers sure don't look like it was him.

Langdon is very slow leaving the lane, looking much like a loose throttle cable or the like. I didn't think he ever really left, but in light of the numbers he must have double pumped. Langdon throws in the towel early while Massey managed to salvage the run somewhat as he goes into the 9th position.
Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 4.473/180.26, Now #8
Right Lane: B. Bernstein Runs 3.919/299.66, Now #2
Both cars had a bit of traction problems, but Lucas had the worst time of it. He got almost completely sideways but managed to gather the car up and keep it off the wall in a nice job of driving.

Bernstein slapped the throttle a couple of times and turned in a really nice shot.

Luigi Novelli is on the bump spot at 5.413.
Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 3.863/305.36, Now #1
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 5.477/124.29, Now #14

Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 3.850/302.89, Now #1
Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 3.912/306.74, Now #4
Here's the last pair for our first pro sessions at Indy.

Dixon puts on a classroom demonstration of how it's supposed to look. He shoots a few sparklers on the hit, but pulled hard all the way across the stripe.

Antron has a great pass for the session but will have to settle for the 4th spot tonight.

We end with Al-Anabi on top and Haddock on the bump in 12th.

Left Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 3.929/308.14, Now #6
Best prior run: 17.097/68.55, Was #21
Right Lane: Joe Hartley Runs 8.842/95.03, Now #22
                                  No Prior Run
2:00 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 79 degrees, relative humidity 44 percent, barometer 29.28 inches, adjusted altitude 2,705 feet, track temperature 104 degrees.

After a great ProStock Bike session, the Big Guns come to the line to qualify. Today they will be challenging a twelve car ladder. Tomorrow will begin the traditional sixteen car bump.

Terry Haddock is on the bump spot at 4.799.

No joy for Hartley again as the slicks are up in smoke well before the three-thirty mark.

Langdon gets his full pull and it a great one as the car moves into the top half of the field. There was a little smoke off the engine at the 1000 foot lights.

Shawn Langdon's incremental times: 60ft-0.858 sec., 330ft-2.201, 660ft-3.146/270.32 mph.

Left Lane: T.J. Zizzo Runs 6.648/91.01, Now #19
Best prior run: 7.264/87.81, Was #20
Right Lane: Pat Dakin Runs 15.211/33.98, Now #21
Best prior run: 7.479/93.13, Was #21
Morgan Lucas is on the bump spot at 4.473.

Dakin blows the engine at the green with a big BANG and a flash of fire. He coasts on down and stops on the track right after the lights.

Zizzo has a good sixty-foot number and then is up in smoke before the 330. He coasts on out.

2:07 p.m. The race track Zambonis are out dusting and cleaning the right lane.
Left Lane: Ron August Runs 4.764/165.23, Now #13
Best prior run: 7.214/118.44, Was #20
Right Lane: David Grubnic Runs 7.177/82.85, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.590/96.60, Was #18
2:40 p.m. ...and we are back after a long clean up and starting line scrape in both lanes.

August continues his TF rookie adventure and will be looking to improve on his half pass effort from last night. Grubnic needs to stay aggressive, but as much as last night.

The Paul Smith tuneup isn't quite right yet and August clicks it early after the 660 lights.

Grubnic continues to struggle and kicks the tires near the 330 mark.
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 10.380/69.36, Now #18
Best prior run: 5.477/124.29, Was #18
Schumacher will get a single pass.

Another up in smoke in the right lane. The Army car barely gets to the sixty-foot light.
Right Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 3.942/306.81, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.024/137.13, Was #16
One more single and it's a good one.

Massey was 16 and is now 8. That should keep him safely in the field. Right down Broadway!.

NOTE: There will be a major Team Snake announcement at the end of this session.

Spencer Massey's incremental times: 60ft-0.858 sec., 330ft-2.198, 660ft-3.149/267.53 mph.
Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 3.904/303.37, Now #4
Best prior run: 4.473/180.26, Was #13
Right Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 5.695/123.98, Now #16
Best prior run: 4.872/150.75, Was #16
Wheels up leave for Lucas and the tires unload as it settles back down. The Geico/Lucas dragster thunders on down the track into the top quarter of the field.

Kalitta's Red Line Oil dragster strikes the tires right after the tree.

Morgan Lucas' incremental times: 60ft-0.862 sec., 330ft-2.180, 660ft-3.113/272.12 mph.
Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 5.070/141.97, Now #13
Best prior run: 4.308/201.46, Was #13
Right Lane: C. Karamesines Runs 5.147/139.36, Now #12
Best prior run: 4.169/234.94, Was #12
Chris Karamesines is on the bump spot at 4.169 and comes to the line.

Looks like similar tuneups and similar results. Neither car had big numbers down load and then shook and smoked the tires almost together.
Right Lane: Troy Buff Runs 4.967/142.07, Now #10
Best prior run: 4.122/224.92, Was #10
Buff will take a single from the current #19 spot.

The BME dragster leaves hard and runs well until near the 330 lights, where the engine goes silent.
Left Lane: Rod Fuller Runs 4.997/141.62, Now #3
Best prior run: 3.888/310.63, Was #3
Right Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 4.046/281.71, Now #8
Best prior run: 3.931/307.02, Was #8
Both cars can't finish under power.

Fuller's engine looked like it expired before mid-track and Litton got a little further before giving it up.
Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 3.908/308.00, Now #2
Best prior run: 3.863/305.36, Was #2
Right Lane: B. Bernstein Runs 3.970/308.78, Now #6
Best prior run: 3.919/299.66, Was #6
Two great back-to-back runs for both drivers and they keep their current positions.

Cory McClenathan's incremental times: 60ft-0.844 sec., 330ft-2.181, 660ft-3.120/269.13 mph.
Brandon Bernstein's incremental times: 60ft-0.865 sec., 330ft-2.220, 660ft-3.181/266.37 mph.

NOTE: Team Bernstein has announced that they will have a major announcement on their 2010 program tomorrow afternoon.
Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 3.887/306.81, Now #1
Best prior run: 3.850/302.89, Was #1
Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 4.889/147.92, Now #5
Best prior run: 3.912/306.74, Was #5
Last pair to wrap up the session.

Dixon had the best time yesterday and gets the best time today. Nice clean pass to almost repeat his prior numbers.

Brown was on a good pass too, until after the 330 feet lights, as the tires go up in smoke.

Larry Dixon's incremental times: 60ft-0.846 sec., 330ft-2.170, 660ft-3.102/272.34 mph.
Antron Brown's incremental times: 60ft-0.857 sec., 330ft-2.201, 660ft-3.426/175.91 mph.

3:06 p.m. Chris Karamesines is on the bump spot at 4.169.

Results for Qualifying Round 3
CLERMONT, Ind. - INDY - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Pat Dakin Runs 3.880/312.21, Now #3
Best prior run: 7.479/93.13, Was #21
7:14 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 79 degrees, relative humidity 46 percent, barometer 29.23 inches, adjusted altitude 2,805 feet, track temperature 101 degrees. It's starting to cool off and the sun is behind the high clouds, so the track is moving into "Prime Time for the third round of qualifying. This will set the twelve car bump spot for tomorrow's two final rounds of qualifying for the Sweet Sixteen.

Chris Karamesines is on the bump spot at 4.169.

Oh, WOW! A super pass for Dakin for a career best ET and MPH! A great looking pass to move him into the current #3 spot.

Pat Dakin's incremental times: 60ft-0.854 sec., 330ft-2.181, 660ft-3.105/273.83 mph.

Looks like some "Stuff" in the left lane, so the clean up starts after the 1000 foot lights.

Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 3.855/313.51, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.477/124.29, Was #19
Right Lane: Del Cox Jr Runs 3.978/300.80, Now #12
Best prior run: 4.123/248.48, Was #12
7:24 p.m. ...and we are back to qualifying. Del Cox Jr is on the bump spot at 4.123.

Schumacher gets his full pull and marches down the track into the current #2 position. Big time header flames from start to finish and a thing of beauty.

No problems for the Mitch King Team this time and Cox "un-bumps" himself back into the field.

Tony Schumacher's incremental times: 60ft-0.840 sec., 330ft-2.152, 660ft-3.079/272.83 mph.
Del Cox Jr's incremental times: 60ft-0.879 sec., 330ft-2.220, 660ft-3.172/264.39 mph.
Left Lane: Joe Hartley Runs 3.919/289.76, Now #10
Best prior run: 8.842/95.03, Was #22
Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 3.914/300.60, Now #8
Best prior run: 4.799/150.93, Was #17
Two "almost" great pass to move both cars into the field, with Haddock making the current top half of the field.

Things went well for Haddock through the lights and then it got ugly after the quarter mile lights, where the engine lights up and burns well down the track towards the top end.

Hartley has a good pass to the 1000 foot lights and has the blower go bang and get loose on the top of the engine.

Joe Hartley's incremental times: 60ft-0.861 sec., 330ft-2.181, 660ft-3.118/268.87 mph.
Terry Haddock's incremental times: 60ft-0.844 sec., 330ft-2.174, 660ft-3.114/268.01 mph.

7:31 p.m. The trucks roll again with a lot of work to do in the right lane.
Left Lane: David Grubnic Runs 3.902/313.07, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.590/96.60, Was #21
Right Lane: T.J. Zizzo Runs 3.945/301.74, Now #15

7:44 p.m. Bruce Litton is on the bump spot at 3.931. The track has cooled off to 92 degrees already.

Two more clean passes and full pulls for both cars.

Grubnic gets the bold yellow DHL dragster from start to finish and into the current top half of the field on a clean and straight run.

Zizzo's time would put him in a sixteen car field. He had better incremental until near half track.

David Grubnic's incremental times: 60ft-0.866 sec., 330ft-2.208, 660ft-3.126/273.94 mph.
T.J. Zizzo's incremental times: 60ft-0.862 sec., 330ft-2.192, 660ft-3.145/265.90 mph.

Best prior run: 4.308/201.46, Was #19
Shawn Langdon is on the bump spot at 3.929, but not for long.

Big time MPH and a great looking pass into the top quarter of the field.

Really good pass for Millican too, but the middle of the field id so tight that he doesn't get into the twelve car field.

Doug Kalitta's incremental times: 60ft-0.853 sec., 330ft-2.180, 660ft-3.104/273.94 mph.

Best prior run: 3.888/310.63, Was #6
Joe Hartley is on the bump spot at 3.919 and Fuller is already in.

Fuller has the slicks start to spin and smoke at the hit and he slows.

Karamesines was on a clean pass until a little after mid-track, where the blower belt came off the car.
Left Lane: Troy Buff Runs 3.950/291.32, Now #18
Best prior run: 4.122/224.92, Was #19
Right Lane: Ron August Runs 4.037/288.21, Now #20
Best prior run: 4.764/165.23, Was #21
Buff gets a full pull and runs into the threes, but can't break into the field for now.

Another career best for the rookie, August, and he improves by one position.
Left Lane: Antron Brown Runs 3.852/314.39, Now #2
Best prior run: 3.912/306.74, Was #9

Langdon is knocking on the door to get into the field from the current #13 spot.

Beautiful runs for both cars and Brown storms into the top half of the field with a great 0.843 sixty foot time.

Langdon is right behind him and just misses the top half of the field by 0.002 seconds.

Antron Brown's incremental times: 60ft-0.843 sec., 330ft-2.158, 660ft-3.078/273.61 mph.
Shawn Langdon's incremental times: 60ft-0.861 sec., 330ft-2.195, 660ft-3.123/273.44 mph.

Brandon Bernstein is on the bump spot at 3.919.

I'm told that Cory Mac is running the new "in house" built Schumacher TF1 chassis this weekend. Looks like it works !

...and the hits keep coming! Three great passes in a row for Cory makes it look like the ultimate bracket racer. The Fram car goes to #2.

Litton has a clean pass and slows just a little from his prior best.

Bruce Litton's incremental times: 60ft-0.872 sec., 330ft-2.225, 660ft-3.157/270.92 mph.
Cory McClenathan's incremental times: 60ft-0.840 sec., 330ft-2.154, 660ft-3.074/273.66 mph.

Best prior run: 3.850/302.89, Was #1
I was shocked to find out that the major announcement from Don Prudhomme, after the second TF session this afternoon, was that the Top Fuel Snake Racing Team assets are available for sale unless an investor can be found! They will continue to fulfill all of their 2009 sponsorship commitments.

Looks like something fails on the US Smokeless dragster as the car goes silent right off the line.

The Al-Anabi diaster repeats another three eighty pass to wrap up the session.

Spencer Massey's incremental times: 60ft-1.625 sec., 330ft-99.999, 660ft-99.999/000.00 mph.

Results for Qualifying Round 4
CLERMONT, Ind. - INDY - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 3.972/301.87, Now #13
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Luigi Novelli Runs 4.634/204.82, Now #14
                                  No Prior Run
6:30 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 65 percent, barometer 29.20 inches, adjusted altitude 2,581 feet, track temperature 97 degrees.

The current thirteen through twenty-two TF racers are all holding their breath, as the expected fifth qualifying session will not happen. It's all or nothing for these racers to fill out the top sixteen spots, with only new four slots available.

Starting the final session, both Clay Millican and Joe Hartley have to make their way into the field to have any change at the Count Down To One top ten if the other qualifies. Nail biting time and we already have the current top half of the field in the three eighties.

Novelli destroys another engine with fire off the engine after the 660' lights.

Massey's car OK off the line, but may not have the numbers to stay in the field, as there are still several cars that can spoil the Snakes weekend.

Spencer Massey's incremental times: 60ft-0.861 sec., 330ft-2.217, 660ft-3.170/265.64 mph.
Luigi Novelli's incremental times: 60ft-0.907 sec., 330ft-2.284, 660ft-3.489/195.65 mph.

Left Lane: C. Karamesines Runs 4.956/148.90, Now #15
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Rod Fuller Runs 3.904/308.99, Now #8
Best prior run: 3.888/310.63, Was #8
6:44 p.m. Lots of work in the right lane and the Safety Safari does there great work again.

For the third time this weekend, the blower belt departs the engine near the 660' mark and the car slows.

Fuller makes another strong and clean pass almost as good as he has run all weekend.

Chris Karamesines' incremental times: 60ft-0.895 sec., 330ft-2.254, 660ft-3.250/901.40 mph.
Rod Fuller's incremental times: 60ft-0.855 sec., 330ft-2.187, 660ft-3.119/271.62 mph.
Left Lane: Troy Buff Runs 5.625/118.62, Now #17
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Ron August Runs 4.013/298.93, Now #14
                                  No Prior Run
This pair will likely set the initial sixteen car bump.

Another career best for the rookie, August. He gets a full pull into the current #14 position.

Buff had a great looking wheel up leave and then kicked the tires right after the 330 lights.

Troy Buff's incremental times: 60ft-0.861 sec., 330ft-2.280, 660ft-3.505/000.00 mph.
Ron August's incremental times: 60ft-0.888 sec., 330ft-2.251, 660ft-3.208/264.03 mph.
Left Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 3.955/307.58, Now #13
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Del Cox Jr Runs 4.848/165.01, Now #17
                                  No Prior Run
Chris Karamesines is on the bump spot at 4.956 with both of these cars capable of running well into the threes.

Cox's run goes bad quickly with "Stuff" coming out of the engine shortly after dropping a cylinder right off the line.

Litton has a clean pass without drama and moves into the thirteenth position with three great unqualified cars still yet to run.
Left Lane: Joe Hartley Runs 4.025/297.75, Now #17
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: T.J. Zizzo Runs 3.972/308.14, Now #14
                                  No Prior Run
The drama is over, as Hartley's engine drops a cylinder off the line and can't make the pace to bump into the field. Millican is finally able to start breathing again.

Zizzo runs close to his career best to move into the new #14 position with a strong pass.

Joe Hartley's incremental times: 60ft-0.882 sec., 330ft-2.242, 660ft-3.210/260.41 mph.
T.J. Zizzo's incremental times: 60ft-0.880 sec., 330ft-2.225, 660ft-3.180/266.64 mph.
Left Lane: B. Bernstein Runs 3.846/316.30, Now #1
Best prior run: 3.908/298.34, Was #11
Right Lane: Clay Millican Runs 3.941/307.58, Now #13
                                  No Prior Run
Check DragRace Central for the exciting announcement from Team Bernstein. Good new for these guys.

Looks like the car likes it too, as the Red Car powers on down the track with a great looking pass into the new number one position with top speed of the meet to boot. Cool!

Millican made sure that he took care of business and runs a strong pass into the #13 position.

Brandon Bernstein's incremental times: 60ft-0.838 sec., 330ft-2.160, 660ft-3.078/276.63 mph.
Clay Millican's incremental times: 60ft-0.871 sec., 330ft-2.207, 660ft-3.150/268.22 mph.
Left Lane: David Grubnic Runs 6.554/90.59, Now #10
Best prior run: 3.902/313.07, Was #10
Grubnic will make a single run.

No joy, as Grubnic's Yellow Car strikes the tires near the 330' lights.

Spencer Massey will stay on the bump spot at 3.972.
Left Lane: Pat Dakin Runs 3.875/313.95, Now #7
Best prior run: 3.880/312.21, Was #8
Right Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 3.888/312.71, Now #9
Best prior run: 3.904/310.27, Was #11
Dakin surprised everyone last night with a huge run to reset his personal best ET and speed. He proves that it was no fluke as he makes another clean and straight run to improve his qualifying position and his career bests again.

Langdon was uncharacteristically second off the line but has better performance down the track and just misses the top half of the field by 0.001.

Pat Dakin's incremental times: 60ft-0.863 sec., 330ft-2.178, 660ft-3.104/274.44 mph.
Shawn Langdon's incremental times: 60ft-0.856 sec., 330ft-2.193, 660ft-3.115/275.22 mph.
Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 3.862/314.83, Now #7

Right Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 3.857/312.86, Now #2
Best prior run: 3.850/302.89, Was #2
Kalitta continues to improve and moves away from the bottom of the top eight. Nice pass.

Dixon is doing three eighties like they are easy and add some big speed to boot.

Doug Kalitta's incremental times: 60ft-0.855 sec., 330ft-2.171, 660ft-3.089/274.05 mph.
Larry Dixon's incremental times: 60ft-0.852 sec., 330ft-2.171, 660ft-3.085/276.41 mph.

Best prior run: 3.855/313.51, Was #5
Right Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 3.851/313.15, Now #4
Best prior run: 3.859/314.61, Was #6
"They're Back!"

Team Army lays down a pass right down Broadway and takes over the new top spot by 0.01! Great looking pass.

Lucas has the power too and pushes the Geico/Lucas dragster down the track and up the ladder into the top half of the field.

Tony Schumacher's incremental times: 60ft-0.846 sec., 330ft-2.155, 660ft-3.071/277.03 mph.
Morgan Lucas' incremental times: 60ft-0.853 sec., 330ft-2.164, 660ft-3.079/276.13 mph.
Left Lane: Antron Brown Runs 3.835/319.22, Now #1
Best prior run: 3.852/314.39, Was #6

Best prior run: 3.851/311.63, Was #5
McClenathan finally finds the limits on the new chassis and smokes the tires before mid-track.

Brown answers the Army's throw down and runs the second faster 1000 foot time in the process.
