Results for Qualifying Round 1
DINWIDDIE, Va. - RICHMOND - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, Fourth annual Virginia NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Adam Flamholc No Time, Now #2
Right Lane: Kirk Kuhns Runs 9.348/96.00, Now #1
1:35 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 82 degrees, relative humidity 55 percent, barometer 29.69 inches, adjusted altitude 2,571 feet, track temperature 104 degrees.

A pair of '67 Camaros open the Pro Mod action today, Kuhns making his first appearance of the year.

Not a pretty start, Kuhns with lots of tire shake and an early shutoff, Flamholc taking too long staging the car and getting no time for his efforts. He also shook, and the car wagged its tail a couple times.

Left Lane: Scott Ray Runs 6.070/234.09, Now #1
Right Lane: Rick Distefano Runs 6.240/232.91, Now #2
A pair of '53 Corvettes made up the second pair...and both made full passes, with "Ricky D" having to pedal his way through tire shake.
Left Lane: Chip King Runs 6.018/236.42, Now #1
Right Lane: Dennis Radford Runs 6.027/234.17, Now #2
How about a pair of Mopar nostalgiacs? A '69 Daytona and a '70 Duster.

How about two full passes?

Chip King's incremental times: 60ft-0.992 sec., 330ft-2.625, 660ft-3.940/187.81 mph, 1,000ft-5.066.
Dennis Radford's incremental times: 60ft-0.992 sec., 330ft-2.641, 660ft-3.952/188.73 mph, 1,000ft-5.071.

Left Lane: Tommy Gray Runs 5.961/239.36, Now #1
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 6.022/240.77, Now #3
Gray's new "Undertaker" Camaro made a nice pass to record the first five of the weekend and Troxel's first effort in the "Voodoo" Corvette also resulted in a full pass with no visible problems.

Tommy Gray's incremental times: 60ft-0.991 sec., 330ft-2.616, 660ft-3.913/190.46 mph, 1,000ft-5.022.
Melanie Troxel's incremental times: 60ft-1.013 sec., 330ft-2.667, 660ft-3.977/190.16 mph, 1,000ft-5.087.

Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.156/237.05, Now #7
Right Lane: Rick Stivers Runs 5.977/239.70, Now #2
Smith's car left harder, then shook, and Stivers pulled away for good on a very nice run.

Rickie Smith's incremental times: 60ft-0.982 sec., 330ft-2.731, 660ft-4.084/185.87 mph, 1,000ft-5.208.
Rick Stivers' incremental times: 60ft-1.017 sec., 330ft-2.633, 660ft-3.929/189.82 mph, 1,000ft-5.039.

Left Lane: Mike Knowles Runs 14.208/62.36, Now #11
Right Lane: Brad Personett Runs 6.715/193.99, Now #9
Oh-for-two. Both cars lost traction at the "hit." Knowles shut off and coasted through, Personett lifted, got the car straightened out, and ran it through.
Left Lane: Tim Tindle Runs 6.068/234.17, Now #7
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.949/240.21, Now #1
Tindle drove through some early shake, Payne made a flawless-looking run to move to the head of the list.

Jay Payne's incremental times: 60ft-1.001 sec., 330ft-2.617, 660ft-3.909/191.21 mph, 1,000ft-5.014.

Left Lane: Raymond Commisso Runs 10.666/80.94, Now #14
Right Lane: Joe Baker Runs 6.027/239.10, Now #6

Right Lane: Danny Rowe Runs 5.963/244.56, Now #3
Castellana's car sound weak when he started his burnout, but it sounded a lot better when the green came on and he was quicker than Rowe to half track, but Rowe's car made a hard charge on the "back half" and recorded the quicker ET of the two.

Mike Castellana's incremental times: 60ft-0.980 sec., 330ft-2.629, 660ft-3.936/189.66 mph, 1,000ft-5.047.
Danny Rowe's incremental times: 60ft-1.004 sec., 330ft-2.651, 660ft-3.947/192.17 mph, 1,000ft-5.042.

Left Lane: Roger Burgess Runs 5.936/241.20, Now #1
Right Lane: Burton Auxier Runs 6.002/233.72, Now #7
Burgess saved the best for last, moving right into the top spot on a flawless run. Auxier wasn't far behind all the way down the strip, but failed to get into the fives.

Roger Burgess' incremental times: 60ft-0.979 sec., 330ft-2.606, 660ft-3.902/190.43 mph, 1,000ft-5.004.

After a few minutes waiting for sprinkled to stop, these two got their chance. Kuhns started the round on the bump spot, was bumped out a couple pairs ago.

Kuhns had a good start, but the car started dancing around before half track and he did not get back in. Castellana made his best run of the weekend to move into the top half of the field.

Left Lane: Tim Tindle Runs 5.938/240.04, Now #7

With the improved conditions (about 1,000 feet better than yesterday), personett should make lots of power.

Brad Personett's incremental times: 60ft-0.986 sec., 330ft-2.642, 660ft-3.896/198.52 mph, 1,000ft-4.954.

Last pair. Burgess shook hard and lifted. Stivers went right down the lane and moved ahead of Personett to take over the top spot.

Rick Stivers' incremental times: 60ft-0.978 sec., 330ft-2.564, 660ft-3.836/194.41 mph, 1,000ft-4.921.

6:01 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 69 degrees, relative humidity 54 percent, barometer 29.80 inches, adjusted altitude 1,397 feet, track temperature 84 degrees.

Wow! Ray made his best run of the weekend and was more than a tenth behind at the stripe. That's the quickest run in NHRA Pro Mod competition history.

Rick Stivers' incremental times: 60ft-1.001 sec., 330ft-2.577, 660ft-3.840/195.34 mph, 1,000ft-4.921.

 (L) Rickie Smith ('68 Camaro) 0.046 5.949 237.63
"Tricky Rickie" versus a Pro Mod "rookie," but Troxel is an experienced racer and she was able to run him down past the 1,000-foot marker to take the win. Melanie Troxel's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.037), 330 ft(-0.024), 660ft(-0.017), 1,000ft(-0.001). MOV: 0.0237 seconds (approximately 8 feet).

 (L) Chip King ('69 Daytona) 0.283 6.007 240.25
Horrible lights for what should have been a very close drag race. Payne wins on a holeshot.
 (W) Tim Tindle (*'67 Mustang) 0.052 5.905 240.42
 (L) Mike Castellana (Al-Anabi '70 Camaro) 0.041 5.919 240.17
THis was a close drag race, Tindle with the lead most of the way, but not by much. Tim Tindle's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.001), 330 ft(0.025), 660ft(0.017), 1,000ft(0.006). (W) Roger Burgess (ProCare RX *'67 Camaro) 0.028 5.929 246.12
 (L) Tommy Gray (Undertaker *'68 Camaro) 0.049 9.056 90.87
Gray got the wheels up, then shook hard when they came down and the rear tires unloaded. Burgess will have lane choice against Payne in round two.
 (W) Danny Rowe (*'67 Camaro) 0.116 5.872 246.89
 (L) Dennis Radford ('70 Duster) 0.066 11.733 87.28
Radford shook hard and lifted. Rowe made his best run of the event to advance to the quarterfinals.
 (W) Raymond Commisso (*'68 Corvette) 0.069 5.843 245.54
 (L) Burton Auxier (Al-Anabi '68 Firebird) -0.013(R) 5.933 237.25
Auxier was a few ticks too early and Commisso will face Troxel in the quarterfinals. He will have lane choice.
 (W) Joe Baker (Mike Ashley *'68 Camaro) 0.038 5.873 244.34
 (L) Brad Personett (Big Stuff *'68 Camaro) 0.140 5.866 249.49
Personett left a tenth on the tree and Baker won on a holeshot. He also ran his best time of the event to go with that excellent light, but he lost lane choice to Rowe by a thousandth of a second.

Results for Elimination Round 2
DINWIDDIE, Va. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Pro Modified at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, Fourth annual Virginia NHRA Nationals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Raymond Commisso (*'68 Corvette) 0.071 5.817 246.03
 (L) Melanie Troxel (*'63 Corvette) 0.069 5.829 247.79
2:36 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 72 degrees, relative humidity 40 percent, barometer 29.97 inches, adjusted altitude 1,315 feet, track temperature 99 degrees.

The first round yesterday was spectacular and conditions are even better today, so hang on to your hats.

THis was an extremely close race, almost dead even at the green and the two quickest runs ever, making this the quickest side-by-side race ever. Commisso's 5.843 yesterday is quick enough to back his 5.817 up as a record.

Raymond Commisso's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.002), 330 ft(0.013), 660ft(0.018), 1,000ft(0.015). MOV: 0.0101 seconds (approximately 4 feet).

Melanie Troxel's incremental times: 60ft-0.966 sec., 330ft-2.568, 660ft-3.840/195.19 mph, 1,000ft-4.920.
Raymond Commisso's incremental times: 60ft-0.966 sec., 330ft-2.553, 660ft-3.820/195.42 mph, 1,000ft-4.903.

 (W) Jay Payne (FireIce *'68 Camaro) 0.105 5.836 244.43
 (L) Roger Burgess (ProCare RX *'67 Camaro) 0.044 5.911 246.30
Payne was late, but had the muscle to run Burgess down by half track and take the win anyway. Jay Payne's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.057), 330 ft(-0.004), 660ft(0.013), 1,000ft(0.017). MOV: 0.0142 seconds (approximately 5 feet).

Jay Payne's MOV: 0.0142 seconds (approximately 5 feet).

Jay Payne's incremental times: 60ft-0.978 sec., 330ft-2.560, 660ft-3.830/194.46 mph, 1,000ft-4.917.

 (W) Joe Baker (Mike Ashley *'68 Camaro) 0.063 5.865 244.92
 (L) Danny Rowe (*'67 Camaro) 0.124 5.854 248.43
Two great runs, but almost ho-hum after the first two pairs...Joe Baker's incremental margins: 60ft(0.078), 330 ft(0.093), 660ft(0.080), 1,000ft(0.064). MOV: 0.0506 seconds (approximately 18 feet). He races Payne in the semifinals, Payne has pane choice.
 (W) Rick Stivers (Trane *'06 Stratus) 0.001 5.836 247.11
 (L) Tim Tindle (*'67 Mustang) 0.039 5.914 240.81
Stivers held the ET record from last night until Commisso toook it away a few minutes ago. He ran within four thousandths of his record pace here, but that's not good enough any more.He nailed the tree and won by almost two car lengths, but he won't even have lane choice against Commisso in the semifinals.

Results for Elimination Round 3
DINWIDDIE, Va. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 3 eliminations in Pro Modified at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, Fourth annual Virginia NHRA Nationals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Jay Payne (FireIce *'68 Camaro) 0.038 5.944 244.43
 (L) Joe Baker (Mike Ashley *'68 Camaro) 0.039 8.411 116.51
3:57 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 73 degrees, relative humidity 39 percent, barometer 29.97 inches, adjusted altitude 1,341 feet, track temperature 101 degrees.

The list of quickest and fastest runs ever took a beating last round and conditions aren't much worse, so they could take another beating here.

Baker's car shook and skated around, heading for the centerline and that was a break for Payne because his car also went through tire shake early in the run. But Payne was able to drive through it and complete the run for the win.

 (W) Rick Stivers (Trane *'06 Stratus) 0.072 5.823 246.93
 (L) Raymond Commisso (*'68 Corvette) 0.055 5.998 235.35
This started out with the potential to be the quickest side-by-side ever, but Commisso had some tire shake early in the run and he lost a lot of ground. Stivers, however, took a shot at Commisso's ET record, but only managed the second-quickest run ever and his speed is only the 11th fastest. Stivers will have lane choice against payne in the final and will have another shot at the record.

 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Jay Payne (FireIce *'68 Camaro) 0.183 6.259 165.27
 (L) Rick Stivers (Trane *'06 Stratus) 0.090 DQ-Centerline
5:02 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees, relative humidity 42 percent, barometer 29.97 inches, adjusted altitude 1,178 feet, track temperature 94 degrees.

Payne was late, but Stivers' car headed straight foe the half-track timing markers and he took them out, taking a bite out of the front of his Stratus, giving the win to Payne. On a day when the record book was completely rewritten, a 6.25 was good enough to win the big prize.
