Results for Qualifying Round 1
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 1 - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 50th annual Kragen O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals presented by Valvoline listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Right Lane: Mike Austin Runs 5.592/255.82, Now #1
Weather conditions: air temperature 68 degrees, relative humidity 43 percent, barometer 29.01 inches, adjusted altitude 2,092 feet, track temperature 86 degrees.

Some wild TAFC passes, so this should be fun.

Brown is a No Show, so Austin will make a single pass. He gets to the finish line without any problems. Not likely to stay #1 for long, but a great place to start the weekend.

Left Lane: Art Trautman Runs 5.725/231.12, Now #3
Right Lane: Larry Miersch Runs 5.379/255.43, Now #1
Two 'Fuelers to the line.

Miersch gets to the 1000ft lights with all of the holes firing, and then has a bunch go wet. He still has the power to run a great "thirty".

Trautman's car was a little lazy off the line and started to drop cylinders after mid-track.

Larry Miersch's incremental times: 60ft-0.930 sec., 330ft-2.419, 660ft-3.551/220.73 mph, 1,000ft-4.519.
Left Lane: Del Cox Jr. Runs 14.643/67.68, Now #5
Right Lane: Ashley Bart Runs 5.537/228.89, Now #2
Cox had a great year in IHRA TF in 2009 and moves to TAD this weekend. The slicks are up in smoke at the green.

Bart's blown car has a nice 0.904 sixty foot time, but bangs the blower before the lights and slows. His early incrementals were better than Miersch's 5.37 pass!
Left Lane: Mark Niver Runs 5.437/268.92, Now #2
Right Lane: Brittany Force Runs 11.025/80.51, Now #6
Niver has gone wild and actually has another color, besides black, on the Billet Bullet. A nice flame job was added over the winter. A strong pass and he takes the new #2 spot.

Brittany's car strikes the tires at the green and slows.

Mark Niver's incremental times: 60ft-0.947 sec., 330ft-2.472, 660ft-3.638/217.49 mph, 1,000ft-4.607.
Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 16.597/41.90, Now #9
Right Lane: Johnny Ahten Runs 5.679/222.99, Now #5
It's Courtney Force's turn this time and it's a repeat of Brittany's run.

Ahten gets a good pass to tune to and takes over the current #5 spot on the sixteen car ladder.
Left Lane: Dale Carlson Runs 5.708/242.50, Now #6
Right Lane: Brandon Johnson Runs 10.317/106.58, Now #8
Carlson blower car vs. Johnson's fueler. Two division six hitters.

Johnson goes three feet and smokes the tires.

Carlson gets down the track in style and moves into the current top half of the field in the #6 spot.
Left Lane: Joey Severance Runs 5.781/190.67, Now #8
Right Lane: Chris Demke Runs 6.578/140.77, Now #9
Two broken runs after strong leaves.

Demke's car has a 0.916 sixty foot time and then has the car pull steadily toward the center line. He finally has to give it up and dump.

Severance was right behind him and ran well until near the top end where the blower went BANG!
Left Lane: Shawn Cowie No Time, Now #16
Right Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 5.311/268.65, Now #1
Two of the best in the US are up next! #2 vs #4...

Cowie's new dragster has no reverse and the entire crew runs out to push him back behind the line. Whiteley waits patiently.

Looks like more problems getting it in to "GO" mode and he has to shut it off.

Whiteley patience pays off with a terrific looking pass right into the new top spot.

3:30 p.m. No bump stop yet...

Results for Qualifying Round 2
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 1 - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 50th annual Kragen O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals presented by Valvoline listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Right Lane: Brooks Brown Runs 9.042/119.13, Now #11
                                  No Prior Run
1:28 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 66 degrees, relative humidity 50 percent, barometer 28.97 inches, adjusted altitude 2,095 feet, track temperature 96 degrees.

This will Brown's first attempt, as yesterday he wasn't able to run.

The engine isn't happy and loses a bunch of holes at the hit. He'll get one more try later.

Left Lane: Brandon Johnson Runs 5.426/260.76, Now #4
Best prior run: 10.317/106.58, Was #12
Right Lane: Shawn Cowie Runs 5.401/263.46, Now #3
                                  No Prior Run
This pair will give us a bump spot.

Two great looking passes and they run into the top of the field. Johnson was dropping cylinders after the thousand and still picks up eight spots on the ladder.

Nice pass for Cowie after yesterday's starting line problems.
Left Lane: Chris Demke Runs 7.906/105.12, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.578/140.77, Was #12
Right Lane: Courtney Force Runs 5.306/251.39, Now #1
Best prior run: 16.597/41.90, Was #16
Courtney Force is on the bump spot at 16.597. Brittany will not be running today, as she is attending college classes.

Demke's car leaves hard, shakes the slicks, and then moves abruptly towards the wall. He pumps it and then lifts.

Force gets the launch right today and powers down the track to the new #1 spot. Nice looking run.

Courtney Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.927 sec., 330ft-2.394, 660ft-3.503/224.32 mph, 1,000ft-4.458.
Left Lane: Johnny Ahten Runs 5.310/253.99, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.679/222.99, Was #9
Right Lane: Del Cox Jr. Runs 5.570/256.21, Now #9
Best prior run: 14.643/67.68, Was #16
Del Cox Jr. is now on the bump spot at 14.643.

Both cars are capable of top half of the field performance and Ahten shows it! Strong pass, with dropped cylinders at the top end, move him into the new #2 position.

Cox has cylinders out at the hit, but is able to move seven spots up the ladder, just missing the top half of the field.
Left Lane: Mike Austin Runs 9.623/85.59, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.592/255.82, Was #10
Right Lane: Joey Severance No Time, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.781/190.67, Was #13
Brittany Force is on the bump spot at 11.025.

Severance has problems getting the engine started and the crew pushes it away.

Austin has a lot of shake off the line and then zings the tires at the shift. He clicks it and coasts on down.
Left Lane: Ashley Bart Runs 5.542/259.01, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.537/228.89, Was #8
Right Lane: Art Trautman Runs 5.806/237.80, Now #12
Best prior run: 5.725/231.12, Was #12
The Lucas Oil/Omega 2000 Team worked hard to get Bart back out here today, after yesterday's blower bang.

Good numbers down low with a 0.916 sixty foot time, but Bart's car gets lazy down track and slows a little from yesterday.

Troutman's fueler is lazy off the line and can't improve.
Right Lane: Dale Carlson Runs 5.391/265.12, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.708/242.50, Was #11
Carlson gets a single.

WOW! A wheels up launch, with some shake, and the Ridley Racing dragster is long gone! Neat to hear each shift on the pass, as he runs into the top half of the field.

Dale Carlson's incremental times: 60ft-0.924 sec., 330ft-2.393, 660ft-3.548/213.84 mph, 1,000ft-4.543.
Left Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 5.335/268.54, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.311/268.65, Was #3
Right Lane: Mark Niver Runs 5.750/257.28, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.437/268.92, Was #8
Terrific looking pass for Whiteley, but no improvements. He drove through some shake off the line and pulled steadily ahead from start to finish.

Niver's fueler was dropping cylinders and will stay #8 for now.

1:56 p.m. Courtney force is number one at 5.306 and Brittany Force is on the bump spot at 11.025. One more chance this afternoon after the second Pro sessions.

Left Lane: Brooks Brown Runs 11.667/94.01, Now #16
Best prior run: 9.042/119.13, Was #15

5:20 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 68 degrees, relative humidity 48 percent, barometer 28.94 inches, adjusted altitude 2,304 feet, track temperature 76 degrees.

Looks like Brittany learned a lot in school today! The fueler jumps off the line this time and thunders down the track to flies into the new #1 spot. After what we saw at the end of FC qualifying, this is terrific!

Brown's engine wasn't happy at the hit and drops cylinders before he clicks it off.

Left Lane: Joey Severance Runs 5.347/265.06, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.781/190.67, Was #14
Right Lane: Chris Demke Runs 5.327/267.00, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.578/140.77, Was #15
The two blown cars have the power this time and make a terrific side by side pass into the new #5 and #6 positions. Demke is away first and stays there from start to finish.

Joey Severance's incremental times: 60ft-0.906 sec., 330ft-2.355, 660ft-3.508/214.08 mph, 1,000ft-4.501.
Chris Demke's incremental times: 60ft-0.890 sec., 330ft-2.340, 660ft-3.495/212.86 mph, 1,000ft-4.485.
Left Lane: Art Trautman Runs 5.757/232.99, Now #15
Best prior run: 5.725/231.12, Was #15
Right Lane: Mike Austin Runs 5.580/254.57, Now #14
Best prior run: 5.592/255.82, Was #14
Trautman's fueler drops cylinder down track and slows from his prior best.

Austin picks up a little ET and stays #14.
Left Lane: Del Cox Jr. Runs 7.801/113.71, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.570/256.21, Was #13
Right Lane: Ashley Bart No Time, Now #12
Best prior run: 5.537/228.89, Was #12
Bart's team tells her to get out of the car, when the engine won't start.

Cox's fueler makes a terrible burnout and then gets the wheels up at the green. It starts to spin the tires and move around on the track, so he clicks it off early.
Left Lane: Shawn Cowie Runs 5.393/262.08, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.401/263.46, Was #9
Right Lane: Brandon Johnson Runs 5.440/264.55, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.426/260.76, Was #10
Cowie gets the wheels up at the green and makes another great looking pass. It's a little quicker, but he will miss the top half of the field by 0.002 seconds.

Johnson,s fueler picks up some good MPH, but will stay #10 for now.

Shawn Cowie's incremental times: 60ft-0.936 sec., 330ft-2.367, 660ft-3.534/210.18 mph, 1,000ft-4.538.
Brandon Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.994 sec., 330ft-2.524, 660ft-3.654/223.50 mph, 1,000ft-4.605.

5:33 p.m. Looks like some "Stuff" in Cowie's lane.
Left Lane: Dale Carlson Runs 8.658/97.62, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.391/265.12, Was #8
Right Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 5.383/268.12, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.311/268.65, Was #4
5:42 p.m. ...and we are back. It's dark now and the lighting makes it hard to see way down track.

Carlson car make a good move off the line and then rattled the tires near the 330 lights. There was a bunch of sparks from underneath the ccar and he slowed.

Whiteley made a strong bid for the top spot, but falls a little short of his weekend best. He'll stay #4.

Jim Whiteley's incremental times: 60ft-0.916 sec., 330ft-2.397, 660ft-3.552/213.98 mph, 1,000ft-4.543.
Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 9.108/90.93, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.306/251.39, Was #2
Last top alcohol dragster to try to improve their qualifying position. Courtney is looking to upset her sister from the #1 spot.

Not tonight! A 0.924 sixty foot tire and then shake and spin. That keeps Brittney in the top spot and Courtney in #2.

5:47 p.m. Brooks Brown is on the bump spot at 9.042.

Results for Elimination Round 1
POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 50th annual Kragen O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals presented by Valvoline:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Joey Severance (Severance Racing B/AD) 0.151 5.371 267.59
 (L) Mark Niver (Billet Machine A/FD) -9.999(R) NT-Left Before Tree
3:34 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 26 percent, barometer 28.88 inches, adjusted altitude 2,833 feet, track temperature 94 degrees.

Lots of good passes in the right lane for the TAFC's. The left lane? Not so much!

Fueler vs. Blower!

It's over before the green, as Niver bumps the throttle twice and pulls the dragster through the staging lights. No time for him.

Severance kept his cool and laid down a clean and straight pass for the easy win.

Joey Severance's incremental times: 60ft-0.935 sec., 330ft-2.392, 660ft-3.541/215.10 mph, 1,000ft-4.530.

 (W) Shawn Cowie (Mundies Towing B/AD) 0.072 5.358 266.48
 (L) Dale Carlson (Hugh Ridley Racing TA/D) 0.060 5.384 262.69
Two blown cars this time and Cowie comes from behind to take the very close win. Great race for both cars!

Shawn Cowie's MOV: 0.0148 seconds (approximately 6 feet).

Shawn Cowie's incremental times: 60ft-0.943 sec., 330ft-2.375, 660ft-3.527/213.87 mph, 1,000ft-4.516.
Dale Carlson's incremental times: 60ft-0.924 sec., 330ft-2.383, 660ft-3.535/213.47 mph, 1,000ft-4.530.

 (W) Brittany Force (Brand Source A/FD) 0.154 5.547 258.37
 (L) Brooks Brown (Mesa Hose A/FD) 0.110 9.623 90.95
This is the third time that two women have qualified one and two in Top Alcohol Dragster history and the Team Force ladies have owned the top of the ladder all three times. The team's tuning wizard, Jerry Darien, was the first winner in TAD in 1981, here at Pomona.

Two fueler and #1 vs. #16. The last time the #16 car won first round was in 1995.

Lots of dropped cylinder in both cars. Brown first and Force near the 1000 foot lights. Brown was away first, but Force was by before 60 feet.

Brittany Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.992 sec., 330ft-2.553, 660ft-3.712/216.51 mph, 1,000ft-4.691.

 (W) Johnny Ahten (Lucas Oil/Island Renovations 0.019 5.455 249.30
 (L) Mike Austin (LAD Automotive B/AD) 0.061 5.420 259.21
Blown vs. fuel

Ahten has a hole out at the hit, but uses a big starting line advantage to seal the win. Great race.

Johnny Ahten's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(0.031), 330 ft(-0.002), 660ft(0.009), 1,000ft(0.029). MOV: 0.0077 seconds (approximately 3 feet).

Mike Austin's incremental times: 60ft-0.907 sec., 330ft-2.366, 660ft-3.543/208.84 mph, 1,000ft-4.558.
Johnny Ahten's incremental times: 60ft-0.918 sec., 330ft-2.410, 660ft-3.576/214.52 mph, 1,000ft-4.571.

 (W) Brandon Johnson (Ti-Xp Xtreme Springs A/FD) 0.045 5.366 264.39
 (L) Larry Miersch (Miersch Racing A/FD) 0.035 5.547 247.79
Fuel only for these two.

Any chance that Miersch had was gone by 330 feet, as several holes on the right side of the engine went cold. Johnson's tune up kept the candles lit until right at the finish line.

Brandon Johnson's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.037), 330 ft(-0.011), 660ft(0.055), 1,000ft(0.115). MOV: 0.1719 seconds (approximately 62 feet).

Brandon Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.960 sec., 330ft-2.459, 660ft-3.581/223.50 mph, 1,000ft-4.534.
Larry Miersch's incremental times: 60ft-0.933 sec., 330ft-2.458, 660ft-3.646/209.56 mph, 1,000ft-4.659.

 (W) Chris Demke (Peen-Rite-Abrasive Finishing B 0.013 5.405 268.44
 (L) Ashley Bart (Lucas Oil/Omega 2000 B/AD) -9.999(R) NT-Broke Before Staging
Bart is out of the car at the 330 lights, as the car won't back up and Demke gets a single.

Nice clean pass, but not as good as he qualified. "A win is a win"

Chris Demke's incremental times: 60ft-0.997 sec., 330ft-2.443, 660ft-3.587/216.97 mph, 1,000ft-4.569.

 (W) Art Trautman (Sonora Drywall A/FD) 0.135 5.971 231.64
 (L) Courtney Force (Darien & Meadows A/FD) 0.078 DQ-Centerline
Courtney was the number one qualifier until the beginning of the last session. Nothing wrong with #2 through!

Whoa! Force gets away first and then has the fueler make a hard move across the track and into the 330 reflector. She lifts and jerks the wheel to get the car back into her lane.

Trautman gets his first TAD round win and will get to race tomorrow! Lots of dropped cylinders down track, but it doesn't matter.

 (W) Jim Whiteley (J&A Service/Rator B/AD) 0.052 5.311 271.02
 (L) Del Cox Jr. (RG Industries A/FD) 0.025 5.940 207.59
...and we save the best for last! Whitely crushes the field with a stellar ET and a new top speed of the meet. Clean and straight into the winner's circle.

Cox's engine was in trouble at the hit with dropped cylinders on the right back all the way down the track.

Jim Whiteley's incremental times: 60ft-0.941 sec., 330ft-2.382, 660ft-3.511/219.29 mph, 1,000ft-4.482.

4:04 p.m. In round two: Force vs. Cowie; Whiteley vs. Demke; Trautman vs. Johnson; and Ahten vs. Severance.

This is the first time Trautman and Johnson have faced each other in eliminations. Trautman lunges through the beams before the tree was started and then smoked the tires. No times recorded.

Johnson makes a clean pass into round three.

Brandon Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.980 sec., 330ft-2.495, 660ft-3.626/222.03 mph, 1,000ft-4.587.

 (L) Brittany Force (Brand Source A/FD) 0.114 5.383 267.43
This is the first time Force and Cowie have faced each other in eliminations.

Fueler vs. Blower. Cowie takes the big upset win, as Cowie is away first and continually to pull ahead until after half track. The fueler starts to close, but runs out of race track.

Your #1 qualifier is out of here!

Shawn Cowie's incremental margins: 60ft(0.059), 330 ft(0.132), 660ft(0.110), 1,000ft(0.074). MOV: 0.0568 seconds (approximately 22 feet).

 (L) Jim Whiteley (J&A Service/Rator B/AD) 0.026 5.370 268.71
Whiteley is 3 - 0 against Demke in prior events.

2009's #2 and #7 cars to the line. Both blown alcohol dragsters.

Identical 0.026 RT's and Demke starts to pull ahead on down the track for a strong finish. It looked like Whiteley's engine had a big fuel leak off the top of the blower going down the track and he can't match Demke's pace.

Chris Demke's incremental margins: 60ft(0.006), 330 ft(0.036), 660ft(0.042), 1,000ft(0.045). MOV: 0.0450 seconds (approximately 18 feet).

Chris Demke's incremental times: 60ft-0.932 sec., 330ft-2.371, 660ft-3.511/217.18 mph, 1,000ft-4.490.
Jim Whiteley's incremental times: 60ft-0.938 sec., 330ft-2.407, 660ft-3.553/216.27 mph, 1,000ft-4.535.

Last pair of the round. Ahten and Severance have each won 1 times against the other in prior events.

Severance is taking no prisoners and nails the tree with a stellar 0.009 RT. He continues to pull steadily ahead, as Ahten's fueler is dropping cylinder on down the track.

Joey Severance's incremental margins: 60ft(0.067), 330 ft(0.102), 660ft(0.101), 1,000ft(0.148). MOV: 0.2744 seconds (approximately 89 feet).

Severance is 1 - 0 against Demke in prior events and this is the first time they have faced each other in a final round. Demke is 0-8 in final rounds and was runner up here last year. Severance won at Las Vegas in 2007.

Demke nails the light with a stellar 0.009 RT and just power away from Severance. There was fluid off Severance's engine down track and he slows. Big time win for Demke to "get the monkey off his back"...
