Results for Qualifying Round 1
|
MADISON, Ill. - ST. LOUIS - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 14th annual AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Brad Personett Runs 5.994/250.27, Now #1
Right Lane: Scott Ray Runs 6.037/235.51, Now #2
2:24 p.m.
It's a very grey, very cool and windy day here at Gateway. The Pro Mods will be the first of the top classes to see what the track will hold, but I suspect at this point it's not going super tacky out there. The track temp is at 84 degrees, mostly from the infrared coming through the clouds and all the Stockers and Super Stockers making their passes.
Well, that just goes to show that maybe I ought to keep my mouth shut.
Both cars run hard, and are pretty much planted in Pro Mod terms.
Brad Personett's incremental times: 60ft-1.010 sec., 330ft-2.712, 660ft-4.008/192.88 mph, 1,000ft-5.090. Scott Ray's incremental times: 60ft-1.000 sec., 330ft-2.642, 660ft-3.961/187.18 mph, 1,000ft-5.085.
Left Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.071/236.42, Now #4
Right Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.025/239.10, Now #2
Two blown cars in this pair, and both have a bit too much aggression for the conditions. I hear both sides pedal at least once but both make it across the finish line in good form.
Mike Janis' incremental times: 60ft-1.027 sec., 330ft-2.687, 660ft-4.011/187.78 mph, 1,000ft-5.128. Ed Hoover's incremental times: 60ft-1.012 sec., 330ft-2.660, 660ft-3.972/188.44 mph, 1,000ft-5.088.
Left Lane: Rick Stivers Runs 9.805/94.07, Now #6
Right Lane: Raymond Commisso Runs 6.114/238.93, Now #5
Left Lane: Dennis Radford Runs 6.020/235.64, Now #2
Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 6.626/155.38, Now #7
The swings got wider and wider the further he went and by 1000 feet he got very close to the wall.
Radford had a uneventful run though with some flashes out of the headers as he crossed the line.
Left Lane: Roger Burgess Runs 6.028/243.11, Now #4
Right Lane: Khalid Balooshi Runs 6.198/192.06, Now #8
Balooshi's car never settled down from the launch and the chutes are out early.
Left Lane: Von Smith Runs 7.163/159.16, Now #10
Right Lane: Chip King Runs 7.526/129.54, Now #11
Not the best performances of the session, but a straight "10" for style points in both lanes.
Smith fought the Camaro from one end to another. King's Daytona lofted the front end as much as I've ever seen on a Pro Mod and the car began to bounce when it landed. It was Pogo city all the way to the finish line as King kept trying to calm the car down with no success.
Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 7.089/144.41, Now #10
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 8.370/104.05, Now #13
Same story here, and thankfully Rickie waited just a touch before he left the line.
Coughlin got VERY loose but kept pedalling all the way to 700 feet or so, tiptoeing along the center line. Smith's car made a hard move to the wall at about 600 feet and was on two wheels at one point. Rickie gets the car settled down and back on all fours, touching but not crossing the center line -- a point that Coughlin had just passed by.
Like I said, timing is everything.
Left Lane: Tony Pontieri Runs 6.008/240.04, Now #2
Right Lane: Tim Tindle Runs 6.044/234.86, Now #7
Pontieri struts his stuff on this pair, one of the better of the session.
Tony Pontieri's incremental times: 60ft-1.011 sec., 330ft-2.651, 660ft-3.963/189.02 mph, 1,000ft-5.074. Tim Tindle's incremental times: 60ft-0.989 sec., 330ft-2.630, 660ft-3.956/185.54 mph, 1,000ft-5.088.
Left Lane: Mike Knowles Runs 6.114/238.60, Now #11
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.957/240.68, Now #1
Rick Stivers is on our new bump spot at 9.805.
Payne shows the turbo guys he knows how to get to the other end. That was about as straight and true as it gets for a Pro Mod.
Jay Payne's incremental times: 60ft-1.005 sec., 330ft-2.626, 660ft-3.922/190.73 mph, 1,000ft-5.025.
Left Lane: Kenny Lang Runs 6.051/240.17, Now #10
Right Lane: Danny Rowe Runs 5.955/244.69, Now #1
These guys are getting serious! Rowe is straight down the middle and takes over the top spot with a very pretty run. Lang's very nice .05 is only good enough for the tenth spot.
Rickie Smith is on the bump spot at 7.089.
2:50 p.m. and for some reason the tractor's making a couple of passes in the right lane.
Left Lane: Joe Baker Runs 6.067/237.42, Now #11
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 6.217/232.35, Now #16
This will be the final pair in a surprising good session.
Both cars made decent passes, but Melanie appeared to lift on the top end as the car kept drifting left towards the center line.

Results for Qualifying Round 2
|
MADISON, Ill. - ST. LOUIS - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 14th annual AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Troy Coughlin No Time, Now #22
Best prior run: 8.370/104.05, Was #21
Right Lane: Rick Stivers Runs 6.111/235.10, Now #13
Best prior run: 9.805/94.07, Was #22 Looking at the Top Sportsman performance just now, this could be a great Pro Mod session.
We'll start the session with a pair of top quality cars that should set the pace.
Coughlin's car quit early and he slowly coasts to the first turnoff. Stivers makes another solid pass in the new car.
Left Lane: Chip King Runs 9.497/96.32, Now #21
Best prior run: 7.526/129.54, Was #21
Right Lane: Von Smith Runs 6.711/153.14, Now #19
Best prior run: 7.163/159.16, Was #20 Wacky racers on both sides. King's car lost traction at the top of low gear while Smith made it past half track before it took a nasty move towards the centerline and he was forced to lift.
Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 9.225/93.88, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.626/155.38, Was #18
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 7.450/131.56, Now #20
Best prior run: 7.089/144.41, Was #20 We're down again for some very light sprinkles.
6:47 p.m.
After just a couple of minutes, we're back to burnouts.
Both cars start sashaying at 400 feet.
Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 6.137/238.68, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.217/232.35, Was #17
Right Lane: Mike Knowles Runs 7.102/143.40, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.114/238.60, Was #15 Both cars were loose early, but Melanie did a great job of getting the Corvette calmed down and back under power. She squeaks into the 16th spot while Knowles stays put just one position ahead.
Left Lane: Khalid Balooshi Runs 9.203/93.36, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.198/192.06, Was #17
Right Lane: Mike Janis Runs 5.981/241.37, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.071/236.42, Was #12 Lots of activity around Balooshi's car just before he stages. The car leads left at the hit and he finally has to lift as the Camaro is very close to the wall.
Janis clicks off a sweet pass in the other lane and moves all the way up to third.
Melanie Troxel is on the bump spot at 6.137.
Left Lane: Raymond Commisso No Time, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.114/238.93, Was #14
Right Lane: Joe Baker No Time, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.067/237.42, Was #12 OK, so now we have a new game to play - timing block soccer. One car nails it and sets it into play and the other car picks it up and boots it further downtrack. Commisso loses the run since he was the first to get the block, and Baker loses his simply because his time didn't compute due to the shrapnel.
Neither car is seriously hurt so no great harm considering both cars are already in the show.
Left Lane: Tim Tindle Runs 6.037/235.56, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.044/234.86, Was #10
Right Lane: Kenny Lang Runs 6.033/238.60, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.051/240.17, Was #11
Left Lane: Scott Ray No Time, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.037/235.51, Was #11
Right Lane: Roger Burgess Runs 6.037/241.24, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.028/243.11, Was #8 Ray shuts off after the burnout and is pushed back. Burgess has his hands full as the car takes the long way to the finish line.
Left Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 12.880/64.69, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.025/239.10, Was #7
Right Lane: Dennis Radford Runs 8.761/101.61, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.020/235.64, Was #6 Nothing doing off the line for either car.
Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 6.414/168.26, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.957/240.68, Was #2
Right Lane: Tony Pontieri Runs 6.003/238.64, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.008/240.04, Was #5 Payne's Camaro moves over towards the wall and after running alongside it most of the track, Jay finally has to step off the throttle.
Pontieri repeats from his previous pass.
Left Lane: Danny Rowe Runs 7.459/133.14, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.955/244.69, Was #1
Right Lane: Brad Personett No Time, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.994/250.27, Was #4 Rowe's car looked like a replay of Payne - over towards the wall and not being able to move it back away.
Personett's car never moved after he staged it. I saw a red light shining so I don't know if it lost fire or if there was an oiling problem.

MADISON, Ill. - ST. Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.539/183.39, Now #19
Best prior run: 7.089/144.41, Was #20
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.103/234.66, Now #13
Best prior run: 8.370/104.05, Was #22 Two ex-Pro Stock racers, both with lots of wins and lots of history will face each other in our opening pair.
Coughlin lays down a nice pass here, and gets into the field. Smith trails pretty much all the way through and gets very close to the center line as he crosses the line.
Left Lane: Von Smith Runs 6.011/240.38, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.711/153.14, Was #21
Right Lane: Chip King Runs 6.183/234.09, Now #19
Best prior run: 7.526/129.54, Was #22 Smith makes a stout hit and nearly gets into the fives. King picks up a bunch but it's not
enough to get him into the qualified list. Both cars used lots of racetrack but that's pretty
much normal for these guys.
Left Lane: Mike Knowles No Time, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.114/238.60, Was #17
Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 6.106/233.88, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.626/155.38, Was #22 Knowles gives it all he can, including crossing the center line and taking out some timing blocks. Castellana had a very good pass but right now we're checking to see if he was able to get a time before Knowles took out the timing system.
We get the word that Castellana's time counts.
Left Lane: Rick Stivers Runs 6.008/239.57, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.111/235.10, Was #16
Right Lane: Khalid Balooshi Runs 6.503/216.13, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.198/192.06, Was #21 Big time hit for Stivers as the new car keeps looking better and better. Balooshi doesn't make the show.

Best prior run: 6.067/237.42, Was #14
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 8.727/105.31, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.137/238.68, Was #19 Mike Castellana is on the bump spot at 6.106.
Melanie's not going to make the show.
Just about every bad that could happen did as the car shook, lifted the front end, set back down crossed up, and then headed off to the side.
Baker stays put in the order.
Left Lane: Kenny Lang Runs 5.988/239.82, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.033/238.60, Was #11
Right Lane: Raymond Commisso Runs 10.258/82.62, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.114/238.93, Was #17 Lang goes low for the session while Commisso bounces the tires and will not qualify.
Left Lane: Roger Burgess Runs 6.646/220.48, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.028/243.11, Was #11
Right Lane: Scott Ray Runs 6.012/233.32, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.037/235.51, Was #13 Burgess has to lift for a very long time in the middle of the run and fails to improve. Ray goes deep into the roster.
Left Lane: Dennis Radford Runs 6.062/232.47, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.020/235.64, Was #10
Right Lane: Tim Tindle Runs 6.214/234.04, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.037/235.56, Was #13 Both cars hammered the tires hard, Tindle actually getting into heavy shake. Neither improves.
Left Lane: Tony Pontieri Runs 10.625/81.51, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.003/238.64, Was #6
Right Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.002/237.67, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.025/239.10, Was #11 Hoover gets a better pass than most this session and takes the #6 spot away from Hoover.
Left Lane: Brad Personett Runs 5.970/250.88, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.994/250.27, Was #5
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 9.470/92.37, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.957/240.68, Was #2 Payne's traveling all over his lane while Personett is quietly improving his spot.
Left Lane: Mike Janis Runs 9.195/90.54, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.981/241.37, Was #4
Right Lane: Danny Rowe Runs 5.945/241.76, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.955/244.69, Was #1 Rowe saves the best for last. He streaks into the 40'a and will lay claim to the top qualifier. Payne is wacky loose and finally lifts.
That's it for qualifying here. Rowe's first and Mike Castellana is on the bump spot at 6.106.

MADISON, Ill. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Pro Modified at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 14th annual AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals:
W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed
(W) Von Smith (Dr. Moon /Al-Anabi '68 Camaro) 0.007 5.958 241.97
(L) Rick Stivers (Trane *'06 Stratus) 0.104 7.511 128.05
Weather conditions: air temperature 76 degrees, relative humidity 55 percent, barometer 29.20 inches, adjusted altitude 2,613 feet, track temperature 102 degrees.Stivers gets really loose, and Smith doesn't. That's the whole story for this pair.
(W) Tony Pontieri (QualityPlus Compressors *'69 0.096 11.026 68.61
(L) Scott Ray (Ohio Crankshaft '53 Corvette) -0.030(R) 6.166 222.80
Ray leaves too early, and Pontieri almost screws things up as he gets very loose and close to gthe center line. He manages to get things gathered up, sees the red light, and coasts down the track.
(W) Dennis Radford ('70 Duster) 0.069 6.060 232.47
(L) Ed Hoover (Trussell *'68 Camaro) 0.067 7.498 132.69
Hoover never really got his car under control though he went through a series of pedal jobs.
Radford just was better in every way and went straight to the finish line.
(W) Kenny Lang (*'53 Corvette) 0.024 6.538 199.64
(L) Roger Burgess (ProCare RX *'63 Corvette) 0.149 15.599 49.03
We get a lane switch at the last minute as Lang changes his mind.
Both cars blew the tires off, but Lang managed to get his somewhat calmed down.
(W) Mike Janis (Eaton '68 Firebird) 0.161 9.135 101.07
(L) Tim Tindle (*'67 Mustang) -9.999(R) NT-Left Before Tree
Not good. Tindle left before the tree fired, Janis smokes the tires.
(W) Joe Baker (*'68 Firebird) 0.034 5.990 238.22
(L) Brad Personett (Big Stuff '68 Camaro) 0.083 5.955 248.75
After all the craziness so far, this pair couldn't have been more different as it is a great drag race. Baker pulls off the holeshot win.Joe Baker's MOV: 0.0149 seconds (approximately 5 feet). He will have lane choice over Radford next round. The trucks are rolling way down into the shutdown area in the left lane.
(W) Troy Coughlin (Jeg's '68 Camaro) 0.047 6.705 159.51
(L) Jay Payne (FireIce *'68 Camaro) 0.107 9.838 89.62
5:32 p.m. The Safety Safari has finished the cleanup in the shutdown area and we pull another pair to the line. Both cars have traction problems, but Coughlin has less. I could see the flashes from the headers as he pedalled once, twice, then three times. Payne has to lift by 330.
Troy has lane choice over Pontieri next time around.
(W) Danny Rowe ('67 Camaro) 0.068 5.925 245.76
(L) Mike Castellana (Al-Anabi '69 Camaro) 0.012 6.009 235.56
This pair had it figured out, and it was a good race. Even with Castellana's exceptional reaction time, Rowe gets the win by about 10 feet. Rowe has lane choice over Smith in the second round.

MADISON, Ill. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Pro Modified at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 14th annual AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals:
W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed
(W) Troy Coughlin (Jeg's '68 Camaro) 0.057 5.963 236.55
(L) Tony Pontieri (QualityPlus Compressors *'69 0.085 8.254 112.18
The cars were fairly close until Pontiere started shaking at about 330. After getting mostly sideways, Tony gives it up and Coughlin takes the win with his first five of the weekend.
(W) Kenny Lang (*'53 Corvette) 0.042 6.082 239.36
(L) Mike Janis (Eaton '68 Firebird) 0.091 6.319 209.56
This one looked a lot like the previous pair. There's something out there at 300-400 feet in the right lane that's getting some of these Pro Mods upset. Janis did a major do-si-do and lost too much ET.
(W) Dennis Radford ('70 Duster) 0.048 6.074 232.75
(L) Joe Baker (*'68 Firebird) 0.061 6.097 213.23
Baker did a much better job over there, but Radford has big power in his Duster.
(W) Von Smith (Dr. Moon /Al-Anabi '68 Camaro) 0.037 5.936 243.85
(L) Danny Rowe ('67 Camaro) 0.057 5.972 244.65
Great passes in each lane, the quickest side by side all weekend. Smith throws down a very stout run and holds off Rowe.Rowe has lane choice over Lang, and Coughlin picks over Radford in the next time up.

Results for Elimination Round 3
|
MADISON, Ill. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 3 eliminations in Pro Modified at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 14th annual AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals:
W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed
(W) Dennis Radford ('70 Duster) 0.089 6.387 202.48
(L) Troy Coughlin (Jeg's '68 Camaro) 0.124 6.595 209.98
2:50 p.m. Sometimes I'm the last to know, but I just noticed Rickie Smith on the line wearing a Jegs shirt. Both cars leave hard and begin shaking at about the same time at the top of first. Radford manages to get a bit more control back and will go to the final.
(W) Von Smith (Dr. Moon /Al-Anabi '68 Camaro) 0.043 5.948 243.68
(L) Kenny Lang (*'53 Corvette) 0.030 6.040 229.82
Lang made this an exciting race. His strategy involved driving to the inside of the lane in order to miss the spots that are upsetting the cars in the right lane. It works pretty well as the car is only crazy moving around instead of completely insane. But it's not enough to overcome a very good hit in the left lane and Smith comes back to the final with lane choice.
