Results for Qualifying Round 2
CLERMONT, Ind. - INDY - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 56th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Right Lane: Chip Ellis Runs 7.107/185.84, Now #8
                                  No Prior Run
3:00 p.m. We've just finished the ceremony honoring Angelle Sampey, which is serving as an official send off into here retirement. Angelle and here husband have been here all weekend, and she looks pretty happy to be married and 3 months pregnant. For a true champion who often received microscopic criticism no matter what she did, it's the least that should have been done. Her old sponsor the U.S. Army is driving here past the stands in a camo Hummer as we listen to Queen's "We are the Champions". It's a nice gesture that not everyone who deserved it got.

Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 36 percent, barometer 29.06 inches, adjusted altitude 2,456 feet, track temperature 106 degrees.

Ellis blows the tire off at the hit and is on the limited through first and part of second. He's leaning to the left for the front half of the track.

Left Lane: Joe DeSantis Runs 7.171/187.91, Now #12
Best prior run: 28.000/0.00, Was #20
Right Lane: Karen Stoffer Runs 10.287/81.13, Now #20
                                  No Prior Run
More traction troubles as both riders hit the limiter in first and are hanging off their bikes. That's the kiss of death for a quick PSM ET, as they require an absolutely motionless driver for the lowest ET.

Karen has a more of a handful than Joe and she gives up since there's no sense in abusing the bike on a busted run. DeSantis moves into the bump spot.
Left Lane: Mike Berry Runs 7.139/185.92, Now #13
Best prior run: 12.278/63.89, Was #21
Right Lane: Angie Smith Runs 7.082/183.34, Now #8
Best prior run: 7.966/134.93, Was #19
Not much traction problems for the twin cylinders here, as their bass grunt stays pretty steady without the spikes we were hearing in the Suzukis. Angie gets fairly deep into the field though there are still a lot of bikes left to fight for the 12 spots today.
Left Lane: Katie Sullivan Runs 7.412/182.95, Now #19
Best prior run: 7.535/173.43, Was #20
Right Lane: Wesley Wells Runs 7.285/182.80, Now #17
Best prior run: 7.333/175.05, Was #18
Katie looked like a sidecar passenger as she was way off the left side of her bike.
Left Lane: David Hope Runs 8.426/128.01, Now #20
Best prior run: 7.533/158.78, Was #20
Right Lane: Junior Pippin Runs 7.093/186.02, Now #9
Best prior run: 7.302/179.42, Was #18
Pippin lays down one of the better runs of the session. Hope has some shake going on as I can see the wheelie bar slapping the track most of the way to 330.
Left Lane: Redell Harris Runs 7.286/156.48, Now #17
Best prior run: 7.257/179.90, Was #17
Right Lane: Douglas Horne Runs 7.035/185.23, Now #5
Best prior run: 7.251/181.94, Was #16
Nice pass for Horne.
Left Lane: Craig Treble Runs 7.044/189.60, Now #7
Best prior run: 7.125/184.17, Was #13
Right Lane: Jim Underdahl Runs 6.996/191.29, Now #3
Best prior run: 7.135/185.84, Was #14
Treble had trouble in first and hit the limiter, while Underdahl kept things under control in the right lane. That's the first six of the session with big speed to boot.
Left Lane: Shawn Gann Runs 7.027/186.85, Now #7
Best prior run: 7.069/185.18, Was #10
Right Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 6.946/192.44, Now #1
Best prior run: 7.113/178.14, Was #14
Steve! Steve! Steve!

Looks like he put his good Vance & Hines engine in as he's absoutely a white streak. He goes to the the top of the list by a bunch on a textbook run.

Shawn Gann's incremental times: 60ft-1.075 sec., 330ft-2.917, 660ft-4.479/156.63 mph, 1,000ft-5.843.
Steve Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.102 sec., 330ft-2.908, 660ft-4.440/159.34 mph, 1,000ft-5.787.
Left Lane: Hector Arana Runs 6.900/192.66, Now #1
Best prior run: 7.052/185.23, Was #11
Right Lane: Michael Phillips Runs 6.958/194.52, Now #3
Best prior run: 7.046/189.04, Was #10
Phillips has spin in first gear but everybody's watching Hector get small REAL fast.

The track record USED to be 6.918 (Smith) 193.85 (Hines)

Hector Arana's incremental times: 60ft-1.077 sec., 330ft-2.874, 660ft-4.400/159.95 mph, 1,000ft-5.741.
Michael Phillips' incremental times: 60ft-1.119 sec., 330ft-2.934, 660ft-4.471/159.53 mph, 1,000ft-5.810.
Left Lane: Eddie Krawiec Runs 6.867/194.94, Now #1
Best prior run: 7.011/184.19, Was #8
Right Lane: LE Tonglet Runs 6.907/192.08, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.985/187.26, Was #5
This is getting good. It's like one of those wonderland sessions at Houston or Englishtown. Obviously, another track record.
Left Lane: Matt Smith Runs 6.938/192.03, Now #5
Best prior run: 7.003/185.18, Was #8
Right Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 6.815/195.17, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.974/185.69, Was #6
The fun continues.

Hines blasts the quickest pass in Pro Stock Bike history on a laser-straight run. That was one happy twin cylinder engine, as it sounded like it couldn't wait to get into the next gear.

If Hines can run a 6.883 for a back up, Harley Davidson will get the record back from Suzuki.

Lots of action to come, and we're just getting warmed up.

Angie Smith is on the #12 bump at 7.082.

Lots of stuff happening last time around, with the weather still being decent. Stouffer has been going in every direction other than downtrack lately so she's looking to get her program straightened out, literally. Not bad, but she still has a way to go to get back to the top.

Karen Stoffer's incremental times: 60ft-1.074 sec., 330ft-2.908, 660ft-4.474/156.52 mph, 1,000ft-5.844.

DeSantis gets a little sideways on the launch. Angie's pass looks really quick but the numbers don't come up.
Left Lane: Douglas Horne Runs 7.016/187.76, Now #10

Great pass for Phillips as he repeats in slightly worse conditions. Gann bumps into the field. Both bikes sounded great with clean shifts and no rev limiters coming into play.
Left Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 6.987/188.46, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.946/192.44, Was #6
Right Lane: Matt Smith Runs 6.975/189.47, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.938/192.03, Was #5
A pair of sixes but neither racer improves. Johnson's bike sounded as if it bogged a bit and laid over in first gear.
Left Lane: LE Tonglet Runs 6.915/191.81, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.907/192.08, Was #4
Right Lane: Hector Arana Runs 6.955/189.28, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.900/192.66, Was #3
LE makes the run of the session as he's very fast twice in a row. Arana was fighting the Buell as it was lofting the wheel on every gear change.
Left Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 6.860/192.80, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.815/195.17, Was #1
Right Lane: Eddie Krawiec Runs 15.860/47.78, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.867/194.94, Was #2
We're looking for a 6.883 or better for Hines to back up the new national record, and he does it easily. That's an extra 20 bonus points for setting the record and at this point in the season it's a huge development.

Krawiec spun hard and lifted.

Congratulations to the team for the quickest pass in NHRA history!

Results for Qualifying Round 4
CLERMONT, Ind. - INDY - Notes from round 4 qualifying in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 56th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Redell Harris Runs 7.097/187.42, Now #13
                                  No Prior Run

11:36 a.m.

We're on live TV so their schedule is trumping ours right now. Due to an oildown in Top Alcohol Dragster we got behind due to the cleanup. Those cars still in staging have been sent back to the pits and will finish their session later.

In the short program opening time, the track crew is taking the time to do a bit of touch up on the starting line with a light scrape.

Of course, the big news was yesterday when Andrew Hines shocked everybody in the house with a world record performance. I shouldn't say "everyone", I suppose, since those old hands who have seen the towering intellect of Byron Hines in action before are thinking this was all part of the plan. The record points wouldn't have been nearly as significant earlier in the year and you don't win all those championships in so many different forms of racing by not thinking things through.

11:45 a.m. and we finally fire the bikes after the word comes that the track is ready.
Left Lane: Eddie Krawiec Runs 6.938/190.54, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.867/194.94, Was #2
Right Lane: Angie Smith Runs 7.096/184.88, Now #13
                                  No Prior Run
Weather conditions: air temperature 71 degrees, relative humidity 38 percent, barometer 29.16 inches, adjusted altitude 2,162 feet, track temperature 96 degrees.

We still have exceptional weather for Labor Day in Indiana, and these engines are taking advantage of the situation. The barometer is slowly beginning to rise and the air's drying out after the cold front of few days back.

Krawiec looks very strong off the line and follows through all the way to the #2 spot.

Eddie Krawiec's incremental times: 60ft-1.086 sec., 330ft-2.871, 660ft-4.404/158.91 mph, 1,000ft-5.761.
Angie Smith's incremental times: 60ft-1.074 sec., 330ft-2.908, 660ft-4.483/153.77 mph, 1,000ft-5.887.

Left Lane: David Hope Runs 7.085/182.95, Now #14
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Junior Pippin Runs 7.059/188.36, Now #13
                                  No Prior Run
Left Lane: Joe DeSantis Runs 7.041/187.60, Now #13
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jim Underdahl Runs 12.892/59.70, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.996/191.29, Was #9
Underdahl has lots of problems as the rpms went to the moon and the bike headed to the centerline. He never shifted and had to shut off.
Left Lane: Katie Sullivan Runs 7.218/183.24, Now #19
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Karen Stoffer Runs 7.045/185.31, Now #12
Best prior run: 7.022/189.63, Was #12
Stouffer managed a straight pass last time around and is looking to regain some consistency. It sounded as if she hit the limiter in first but otherwise it was a nice looking pass.
Left Lane: Mike Berry Runs 7.253/177.53, Now #20
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Douglas Horne Runs 7.179/184.09, Now #11
Best prior run: 7.016/187.76, Was #11
Angie Smith is on the bump spot at 7.096.
Right Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 6.950/191.13, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.946/192.44, Was #6
That was a very stout run considering what the others have been doing so far this session. One thing that should be mentioned is that Johnson was a lot less aggressive in first gear, as the bike sounded like it laid over just a touch. Maybe that's the key.
Left Lane: Craig Treble Runs 7.084/185.59, Now #15
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Chip Ellis Runs 6.983/190.43, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.982/191.65, Was #8
Treble gets in and Ellis stays put. Treble's MPH was way down but I'm not sure why.
Left Lane: Shawn Gann Runs 6.976/189.20, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.999/188.52, Was #10
Right Lane: Michael Phillips Runs 6.997/193.10, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.956/193.10, Was #7
Gann gets most of that one and moves up a couple of spots. Like a lot of other Suzuki racers, Phillips was fighting his bike through first gear as it spun the slick hard.

Shawn Gann's incremental times: 60ft-1.068 sec., 330ft-2.875, 660ft-4.427/157.12 mph, 1,000ft-5.795.
Michael Phillips' incremental times: 60ft-1.114 sec., 330ft-2.940, 660ft-4.483/158.43 mph, 1,000ft-5.836.
Left Lane: Matt Smith Runs 6.938/189.73, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.938/192.03, Was #5
Right Lane: LE Tonglet Runs 6.888/193.10, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.907/192.08, Was #4
That was a very good run for Smith, but Tonglet is in another time zone. LE lays down the quickest pass of the session by far. And if you're wondering, his first gear was under control.

Matt Smith's incremental times: 60ft-1.060 sec., 330ft-2.864, 660ft-4.405/158.06 mph, 1,000ft-5.762.
LE Tonglet's incremental times: 60ft-1.083 sec., 330ft-2.866, 660ft-4.390/159.97 mph, 1,000ft-5.731.
Left Lane: Hector Arana Runs 7.080/186.59, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.900/192.66, Was #4
Right Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 6.876/192.88, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.815/195.17, Was #1
The new record holder takes over quick time for the session while Arana falls off.

That was a quick, smooth session and there's one more to go. David Hope held on the the bump spot at 7.085

Results for Qualifying Round 5
CLERMONT, Ind. - INDY - Notes from final, round 5 qualifying in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 56th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Wesley Wells Runs 7.054/191.24, Now #14
Best prior run: 7.157/189.90, Was #19
3:39 p.m. This is it for qualifying here at Indy. It's the fifth chance that only comes once a year.

Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 34 percent, barometer 29.09 inches, adjusted altitude 2,464 feet, track temperature 114 degrees.

Wells makes the most of it by picking up a tenth over his earlier run. I think we're going to see that was a huge run as the session progresses.

Left Lane: Angie Smith Runs 7.118/186.82, Now #18
Best prior run: 7.096/184.88, Was #18
Right Lane: Mike Berry Runs 7.159/183.79, Now #20
Best prior run: 7.253/177.53, Was #21
Neither racer makes the show.

Craig Treble is on the bump spot at 7.084.
Left Lane: Junior Pippin Runs 7.112/186.51, Now #15
Best prior run: 7.059/188.36, Was #15
Right Lane: Katie Sullivan Runs 7.288/183.39, Now #21
Best prior run: 7.218/183.24, Was #21
Sullivan looked like a bull rider as she had to manhandle the bike the entire front half of the track, both left and then ride. There was no way things were going to turn into a happy ending for her.
Left Lane: Karen Stoffer Runs 6.957/192.17, Now #8
Best prior run: 7.022/189.63, Was #12
Right Lane: Redell Harris Runs 6.999/191.67, Now #12
Best prior run: 7.097/187.42, Was #19
Stoffer looks like the Old Karen as it's a very quick, straight run with no issues. Harris is right there with her as he ties his previous career quickest pass and jumps into the 12th spot.
Left Lane: Douglas Horne Runs 7.187/185.00, Now #13
Best prior run: 7.016/187.76, Was #13
Right Lane: David Hope Runs 7.054/186.95, Now #16
Best prior run: 7.085/182.95, Was #18
Hope did a great job of driving as the bike wanted to bounce and move toward the center line. He's still able to squeak out a run quick enough to make the show and there's only two racers behind him who could bump him out at this point.
Left Lane: Jim Underdahl Runs 7.086/189.95, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.996/191.29, Was #11
Right Lane: Craig Treble Runs 6.962/191.57, Now #9
Best prior run: 7.084/185.59, Was #18
I mentioned two possible bumpers but I was incorrect as it looks like Treble is the last remaining non-qualifier.

He ruins Hope's weekend as Craig makes a stellar charge on the Pistonator.
Left Lane: Chip Ellis Runs 6.939/193.57, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.982/191.65, Was #11
Right Lane: Joe DeSantis Runs 14.513/45.55, Now #15
Best prior run: 7.041/187.60, Was #15
DeSantis' rpms sailed when he left and I never heard a shift. Ellis makes a strong move up the ladder.
Left Lane: Michael Phillips Runs 6.919/196.39, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.956/193.10, Was #8
Right Lane: Shawn Gann Runs 7.009/190.43, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.976/189.20, Was #11
Phillips sets a new track speed record as he moves deeper into the top half. Gann slows slightly and stays in place.
Left Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 7.016/191.54, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.946/192.44, Was #8
Right Lane: Matt Smith Runs 7.111/170.13, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.938/192.03, Was #6
This was a pretty good race until the big end. I didn't see what happened to Smith, but I hear Bob Frey saying that there wasn't any high gear.

Steve Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.124 sec., 330ft-2.954, 660ft-4.495/158.35 mph, 1,000ft-5.850.
Matt Smith's incremental times: 60ft-1.078 sec., 330ft-2.899, 660ft-4.449/157.59 mph, 1,000ft-5.848.
Left Lane: LE Tonglet Runs 6.847/195.05, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.888/193.10, Was #3
Right Lane: Hector Arana Runs 6.874/192.91, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.900/192.66, Was #4
That was absolutely a space shuttle liftoff for Tonglet as he destroys the front half and runs the second quickest pass ever. Hey, conditions aren't THAT good!

Arana is right there and both bikes stay put.
Left Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 6.836/196.76, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.815/195.17, Was #1
Right Lane: Eddie Krawiec Runs 6.930/195.25, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.867/194.94, Was #3
Hines re-sets the track speed record and this will end qualifying for Indy 2010. Race day tomorrow proves to be a real cliff hanger.

Krawiec is 7-1 against Horne, but Horne's only win against Krawiec came in their only other round one pairing, last year at this event.

This is the first time Tonglet and DeSantis have faced each other. DeSantis is Tonglet's 14th different opponent, Tonglet is DeSantis' 30th.
