Results for Qualifying Round 1
CLERMONT, Ind. - INDY - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 56th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: John Hart Runs 6.426/216.20, Now #1
Right Lane: Don Devault Runs 7.860/121.20, Now #2
12:49 p.m. It's a beautiful day here at Indy, with fluffy clouds in a bright blue sky. There's a light breeze.

Weather conditions: air temperature 77 degrees, relative humidity 46 percent, barometer 28.95 inches, adjusted altitude 2,905 feet, track temperature 104 degrees.

Devault's Camaro moves around a bunch on the leave and it's coasting early in the pass. Hart gets some data, but perhaps not much that's usable.

Left Lane: Rick Cortino Runs 6.042/217.56, Now #1
Right Lane: Cassie Simonton Runs 7.240/132.17, Now #3
Simonton has a great looking operation with attractive car graphics, nice uniforms, and all the rest. That doesn't help her much here as the car is a bit lazy on the hit but begins to shake and spin at about 400 feet.

Cortino lands in the top spot, at least for a few minutes.
Left Lane: Fred Hagen Jr. Runs 6.496/148.33, Now #3
Right Lane: Wayne Butler Runs 6.590/238.09, Now #4
From watching all the other classes race, the track appears to be in exceptional condition. This is its first test with high horsepower and right now it's hard to tell if the busted runs are due to the crew chiefs underestimating the surface or there's not enough to hold these blown cars.

Hagen looked to be on a good pass but the car slowed noticeably on the top end. Butler's car did a small bounce on the leave, hesitated, and then gained rpm to finish the run.
Left Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 5.879/247.47, Now #2
Right Lane: John Bojec Runs 5.743/250.32, Now #1
These guys did a much better job and we finally get into the fives. Dobbs looked like he was pretty loose after hitting high gear, but got the fishtailing settled down and put the car across the finish line in the center of the lane.

Bojec went straight - and straight to the top of the class.

Larry Dobbs' incremental times: 60ft-1.018 sec., 330ft-2.647, 660ft-3.903/197.57 mph, 1,000ft-4.973.
John Bojec's incremental times: 60ft-0.981 sec., 330ft-2.557, 660ft-3.792/200.74 mph, 1,000ft-4.847.
Left Lane: Thomas Carter No Time, Now #10
Right Lane: Alexis De Joria Runs 5.633/257.92, Now #1
Carter broke before he could stage. DeJoria's car sounded like it stayed in first gear for a long time but the numbers put her at the top by a sigificant amount.

Alexis De Joria's incremental times: 60ft-0.990 sec., 330ft-2.533, 660ft-3.736/205.47 mph, 1,000ft-4.762.
Left Lane: Chris Foster Runs 7.401/124.13, Now #9
Right Lane: Vern Moats No Time, Now #12
Foster's Monte Carlo kept moving left towards the wall and he had to lift. Moats' car hammered the tires hard on the leave and shook a a few feet until Vern could get it shut down.
Left Lane: Brent Henry Runs 10.454/68.75, Now #12
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.532/258.47, Now #1
Bartone lays down a textbook pass. Straight, smooth, and quick.

Tony Bartone's incremental times: 60ft-0.933 sec., 330ft-2.455, 660ft-3.647/207.75 mph, 1,000ft-4.665.
Left Lane: J. Lombardo Jr. Runs 6.093/252.71, Now #6
Right Lane: Steve Harker Runs 14.642/56.17, Now #14
Harker's car headed straight for the wall on the hit. Lombardo's car was heading the other way towards his wall. Lombardo made it just a bit further.
Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 6.244/153.42, Now #7
Right Lane: Mickey Ferro No Time, Now #16
Both cars were on a strong pass, when Ferro's Monte Carlo headed towards the center line. Payne got a very good look at what was happening and lifted.

You'll notice that we didn't see Frank Manzo. We were notified of the sad news that Frank's father passed away earlier this week. Our condolences go out to the Manzo family for their loss.

Results for Qualifying Round 2
CLERMONT, Ind. - INDY - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 56th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Vern Moats Runs 5.668/255.77, Now #3
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Thomas Carter Runs 6.309/185.33, Now #8
                                  No Prior Run
4:08 p.m. These racers have had a few hours to look over their earlier data and decide what needs to be done to run an Alcohol Funny Car down this track. Last session, probably more missed than got it right.

Carter's going to lose another run as one of the chutes deployed right at the hit. Moats is dancing around quite a bit in the left lane but cards a very nice pass to get him into the show.
Left Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 5.632/253.99, Now #2
                                  No Prior Run
Ferro's on a single so we can hear pretty clearly what his engine is doing. He leaves hard and the rpms build nicely. There may have been a slight flat spot right around the shift but it's still a very good run, good enough to be second best.
Left Lane: Steve Harker Runs 15.666/56.41, Now #17
Best prior run: 14.642/56.17, Was #17
Right Lane: Brent Henry Runs 5.674/253.66, Now #5
Best prior run: 10.454/68.75, Was #16
So far this session, the crew chiefs seem as if they've corrected identified what needed to be done. Neither of these cars made it down the track last time up, so they have a big window for improvement.

Hawker misses completely as the car immediately hammers the tires and the car turns on a 45 degree angle toward the wall. He does a great job of driving and barely escapes scraping the paint. That's very unusual to see this team lose two runs in a row.

I'd remarked on the unusual weather here. The low humidity is helping things out but we almost never get such a low barometer here.

Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 32 percent, barometer 28.94 inches, adjusted altitude 2,982 feet, track temperature 107 degrees.

Left Lane: Don Devault Runs 6.917/183.15, Now #15
Best prior run: 7.860/121.20, Was #16
Right Lane: Chris Foster Runs 5.709/249.39, Now #6
Best prior run: 7.401/124.13, Was #15
Devault is really agressive as he is feathering the throttle most of the way down but never gets the car to really settle down. In the other lane, Foster has no visible problems and gets into the top half.
Left Lane: Cassie Simonton Runs 6.725/149.08, Now #15
Best prior run: 7.240/132.17, Was #16
Right Lane: Fred Hagen Jr. Runs 5.626/252.95, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.496/148.33, Was #13
Both cars looked pretty good on the front half but Simonton started falling back just past the 660. Hagen's run is straight as a string and he jumps into the #2.
Left Lane: Wayne Butler Runs 7.813/116.71, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.590/238.09, Was #14
Right Lane: John Hart Runs 6.037/233.88, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.426/216.20, Was #13
Butler was really, really loose and got very close to the wall. Hart finds a few tenths.
Left Lane: John Bojec No Time, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.743/250.32, Was #8
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.766/250.18, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.244/153.42, Was #12
Payne hits a long, smoky burnout. Bojec's team watches, and then pulls the car off to the short chute without ever attempting to fire it.

Payne's wheelspeed gets a little crazy right at the shift but he manhandles the car back to the center of the lane.
Left Lane: Alexis De Joria Runs 6.645/152.95, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.633/257.92, Was #4
Right Lane: J. Lombardo Jr. Runs 5.766/254.14, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.093/252.71, Was #12
DeJoria's car is fairly twitchy and she falls back not too far past half track. Lombardo gets the NAPA car almost into the top half.
Left Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.789/247.34, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.532/258.47, Was #1
Right Lane: Rick Cortino Runs 5.990/237.34, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.042/217.56, Was #12
This pair ends the session and Bartone's still in the top spot.

Results for Qualifying Round 3
CLERMONT, Ind. - INDY - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 56th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Right Lane: Brian Harvanek Runs 5.891/240.42, Now #11
                                  No Prior Run
1:34 p.m.

Harvanek just got a new engine and had set out the previous qualifying sessions. This will be the maiden voyage for their new combination.

And it's a good one. The team now has some good data to tune from.
Left Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 6.724/234.33, Now #16
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: John Bojec Runs 5.620/256.06, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.743/250.32, Was #8
Weather conditions: air temperature 76 degrees, relative humidity 36 percent, barometer 29.07 inches, adjusted altitude 2,563 feet, track temperature 106 degrees.

Dobbs was very lazy off the line, and then the car kept moving left so he drove alongside the wall for most of the pass. In the meantime, Bojec lays down some impressive numbers and shoots all the way up to the second slot.

John Bojec's incremental times: 60ft-0.956 sec., 330ft-2.501, 660ft-3.710/204.85 mph, 1,000ft-4.743.

Left Lane: Thomas Carter Runs 5.735/241.28, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.309/185.33, Was #14
Right Lane: Steve Harker Runs 5.660/252.76, Now #6
Best prior run: 14.642/56.17, Was #19
Harker has had two busted runs so far and that's just not a normal thing for the team.

Both teams lay down passes more like they're known for. Harker's Monte Carlo waggled a bit on the gear change, but not enough to pucker anything. Carter was very straight and smooth.

Thomas Carter's incremental times: 60ft-0.979 sec., 330ft-2.534, 660ft-3.757/201.91 mph, 1,000ft-4.813.
Steve Harker's incremental times: 60ft-0.969 sec., 330ft-2.512, 660ft-3.728/203.83 mph, 1,000ft-4.772.
Left Lane: John Hart Runs 6.486/234.70, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.037/233.88, Was #15
Right Lane: Wayne Butler Runs 6.102/229.74, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.590/238.09, Was #16
Hart was very aggressive on the leave but the bad news is that all that agressiveness went over the ability of the track to handle it. What started out as average quivering turned into serious shake that took the car out of the groove.

Butler just needs to find some more power as he was pretty much in the groove the whole way down.
Left Lane: Rick Cortino Runs 5.936/232.71, Now #14
Best prior run: 5.990/237.34, Was #14
Right Lane: Don Devault Runs 6.512/210.93, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.917/183.15, Was #19
Devault's Camaro was hopping on the leave, and even after numerous lifts of the pedal didn't get settled down until way down track.

Devault steps up a bunch but still doesn't get in.

Wayne Butler is on the bump spot at 6.102.
Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.721/255.34, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.766/250.18, Was #12
Right Lane: Cassie Simonton Runs 5.693/253.80, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.725/149.08, Was #19
Nice side by side race. Cassie gets in and Jay steps up.
Left Lane: J. Lombardo Jr. Runs 5.890/173.49, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.766/254.14, Was #13
Right Lane: Alexis De Joria Runs 5.580/257.78, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.633/257.92, Was #5
Another great pair with Lombardo slightly ahead until we see his chutes deploy at about 800 or 900 feet. He noses over and Alexis steams on through all the way up to the second spot.

John Lombardo Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-0.946 sec., 330ft-2.459, 660ft-3.660/206.35 mph, 1,000ft-4.748.
Alexis De Joria's incremental times: 60ft-0.958 sec., 330ft-2.493, 660ft-3.689/206.64 mph, 1,000ft-4.711.
Left Lane: Chris Foster Runs 5.740/249.39, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.709/249.39, Was #10
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.498/261.37, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.532/258.47, Was #1
Bartone gets everybody talking with a stout pass, with career best numbers on both ET and speed.

Tony Bartone's incremental times: 60ft-0.948 sec., 330ft-2.450, 660ft-3.630/210.28 mph, 1,000ft-4.639.
Left Lane: Brent Henry Runs 5.638/257.68, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.674/253.66, Was #8
Right Lane: Vern Moats Runs 5.674/257.33, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.668/255.77, Was #7
Two straight passes, with the sound of someone slapping the pedal at least once.
Left Lane: Fred Hagen Jr. Runs 5.550/260.56, Now #2
