Results for Qualifying Round 1
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 2 - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 46th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Right Lane: Grant Downing Runs 9.843/59.54, Now #1
2:28 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 73 degrees, relative humidity 24 percent, barometer 29.07 inches, adjusted altitude 2,232 feet, track temperature 96 degrees.

Downing launched, shook, and both chutes came out. He was able to coast to the first turnoff.

Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 8.401/84.16, Now #2
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 6.311/119.44, Now #1
Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 21 percent, barometer 29.07 inches, adjusted altitude 2,307 feet, track temperature 94 degrees.

Both cars had good 60-foot times, but that was about as far as they got Haddock up in smoke shortly after, then Densham.

Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 9.276/84.65, Now #4
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 5.660/139.95, Now #1
Same story, different cast. Troxel burped the throttle a second time - that will give her a spot further back in the run sequence tomorrow.
Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.751/172.01, Now #2
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 4.167/304.39, Now #1
Lee made a nice, straight, full pass. Head got about 500 feet at a good pace, then lost traction in a cloud of tire smoke, the car wagging its tail violently.
Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 6.521/96.73, Now #5
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 7.136/85.85, Now #6
300 feet and a cloud of tire smoke...
Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.795/116.33, Now #4
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 8.724/82.51, Now #9
More of the same. Pedregon got further than most, but lost traction around the 500-foot mark.
Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 5.560/125.06, Now #3
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 7.119/86.47, Now #8
Ditto...Hight got about 600 feet before losing traction, Capps about 300.
Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 6.275/101.87, Now #7
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.190/290.38, Now #2
Worsham lost traction about where most have smoked the tires, but Tasca almost made a full pass, his car making a hard move toward the centerline near the finish stripe.
Left Lane: A. Force Hood Runs 4.982/163.83, Now #5
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.144/302.82, Now #1
Force Hood made a good pass for about half the distance, then started losing traction. Beckman had no apparent problems anywhere during his run and he's now #1.
Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.170/297.68, Now #4
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.139/293.86, Now #1
Last pair - Hagan with a 37 point lead in the Countdown To One. Force needs to keep Hagan from stretching that lead during qualifying in order to keep from being more than two rounds behind entering qualifying.

Hagan goes to #1 with a strong charge, Force tried to stay with him, fell behind further with each timing increment and he came up fourth. That gives Hagan three more points and now he leads by exactly 40 points. Then everyone held their breath, but both lanes were oil-free.

Results for Qualifying Round 2
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 2 - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 46th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: James Day No Time, Now #20
                                  No Prior Run
3:41 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 22 percent, barometer 29.09 inches, adjusted altitude 2,337 feet, track temperature 88 degrees.

This was Day's first attempted trip down the track this weekend and it ended quickly with a big BOOM that lifted the body and sent the relief hatch sailing high in the air. A trail of fluid ran across the track after the car stopped, but it dried quickly, either fire extinguisher fluid or fuel.

Left Lane: Grant Downing Runs 5.243/142.57, Now #8
Best prior run: 9.843/59.54, Was #19
Downing's first qualifying attempt, yesterday, ended in tire shake that deployed his chutes.

This one looked good for about 400 feet, then the car started losing traction and he clicked it off.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson No Time, Now #19
Best prior run: 8.724/82.51, Was #18
Right Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.153/293.66, Now #3
Best prior run: 9.276/84.65, Was #19
Bode made a very good run and moved way into the field. Wilkerson's car dropped a cylinder (or two) early and then the engine went BANG with a big fireball under the car and a visible trail of oil as he fought to bring the car to a halt, with visible flames and heavy black smoke from under the car. Wilkerson got out quickly and the Safety Safari got the fire under control, but the body was toasted and the crew will have a lot of work to do to get ready for tomorrow. Under the Pomona oildown rules, Wilkerson loses the run, a 4.290 at 273.33 mph.

Bob Bode's incremental times: 60ft-0.898 sec., 330ft-2.337, 660ft-3.335/256.94 mph.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.128/298.67, Now #1
Best prior run: 7.136/85.85, Was #17
Right Lane: Terry Haddock No Time, Now #18
Best prior run: 8.401/84.16, Was #18
Haddock dropped a cylinder or two on the left side and 'went bowling for cones," taking out the 660-foot timing blocks (both of them). Pedregon made a nice run to take over the #1 spot on the qualifying list.

Cruz Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.900 sec., 330ft-2.330, 660ft-3.324/259.01 mph.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 6.438/98.77, Now #16
Best prior run: 7.119/86.47, Was #17
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 7.673/79.99, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.521/96.73, Was #16
Oh-for-two. Arend's candles went out quickly, could not see why, and Capps lost traction a couple hundred feet out.
Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 5.343/147.05, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.311/119.44, Was #15
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.114/307.93, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.275/101.87, Was #14
Densham pedaled twice before giving it up as a bad idea. Meanwhile, Worsham went right down the groove and right to the head of the list.

Del Worsham's incremental times: 60ft-0.897 sec., 330ft-2.327, 660ft-3.318/261.17 mph.

Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 5.585/134.94, Now #15
Best prior run: 5.660/139.95, Was #14
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.179/296.57, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.795/116.33, Was #15
Densham's run put him on the bump spot for the provisional 12-car field.

Troxel's run looked a lot like Densham's, the car losing traction, the driver pedaling, the car losing traction again, the driver pedaling again, then the header flames going out. Meanwhile, pedregon managed to get to the other end without any serious problems, bumping Densham. Now Grant Downing is on the bump spot at 5.243.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 5.381/134.00, Now #10
Best prior run: 4.190/290.38, Was #9
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.080/312.35, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.560/125.06, Was #14
Tasca was in this one for about 400 feet, then the header flames went out. Meanwhile, Hight made his best run in awhile, right down the groove, and he went to the top of the list.

Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.898 sec., 330ft-2.320, 660ft-3.296/264.80 mph.

Left Lane: Paul Lee Runs 8.787/49.56, Now #8
Best prior run: 4.167/304.39, Was #7
Right Lane: A. Force Hood Runs 4.076/309.98, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.982/163.83, Was #12
There was a flash of flame under Lee's car about 100 feet out and the chutes deployed automatically. Force Hood made a pretty run, just a few ticks better than Hight's, and she replaced him at the head of the class.

Ashley Force Hood's incremental times: 60ft-0.890 sec., 330ft-2.306, 660ft-3.285/262.28 mph.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.981/155.40, Now #6
Best prior run: 4.144/302.82, Was #6
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 9.174/73.61, Now #12
Best prior run: 4.751/172.01, Was #12
Head's car headed for the wall immediately and he had to lift. Beckman got a bit further, started spinning the tires, and he also lifted. Head is on the bump spot, but safe because the only two cars left in the lanes are already qualified.
Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 9.397/69.74, Now #6
Best prior run: 4.139/293.86, Was #5
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.085/310.34, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.170/297.68, Was #9
Final pair. Hagan is currently 40 points ahead of Force and wins the tie-breaker, so Force would have to go three rounds farther than Hagan Sunday if he can't nibble into that lead.

Hagan was up in smoke early in the run, Force went right down the groove...but he's only third-quickest of the round, so he only gains one point to cut Hagan's lead back to 39 points. Now it's two round on Sunday...but there are two more qualifying sessions and either of them could still make some big gains before it's over.

200 feet and tire smoke, both lanes.
Left Lane: Justin Schriefer Runs 6.581/101.25, Now #14
                                  No Prior Run

Best prior run: 4.139/293.86, Was #6
Hagan is already in the field, but had a bad run yesterday, so he had to run early in this session. Schriefer's run will set a 16-car bump spot.

Good pass by Hagan, a few thousandths better than his run Thursday. Schriefer lost traction about 200 feet out. That puts Terry Haddock on the bump spot at 8.331.

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 5.027/158.78, Now #13

These two have yet to make a full pass this weekend, losing traction in both prior attempts.

Capps lost traction about 660 feet down the track, but Arend motored right down the groove.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.292/232.27, Now #11
Best prior run: 4.179/296.57, Was #11

                                  No Prior Run
Both cars went down the track pretty well for about 800 feet, then both cars got a bit loose and moved around a lot, Pedregon's car making a couple of hard moves.
Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.709/175.48, Now #10
Best prior run: 4.153/293.66, Was #10

Bode's car lost traction violently at about half track. Tasca made a full pass, did not improve.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.188/299.73, Now #4

Right Lane: Grant Downing Runs 5.370/139.79, Now #17
                                  No Prior Run
Force will need something better than a 4.153 to earn a bonus point - Matt Hagan has already run currently is quickest of the session, potentially three bonus points.

Both cars lost traction, Downing after 200 feet, Force after about 400. That changes championship situation, Force is now 42 points back, but three positions ahead in qualifying.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 6.202/109.32, Now #2
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.136/306.46, Now #6
                                  No Prior Run
Hight smoked them about where Force lost teaction. Beckman made a nice run, moved ahead of Hagan in the order and the session, now Force is qualified four spots ahead of Hagan, but Hagan is 41 points ahead.
Left Lane: A. Force Hood No Time, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.076/309.98, Was #1
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.283/224.85, Now #5
Best prior run: 4.128/298.67, Was #5
Both cars were spinning the tires before the stripe. Force Hood left some oil on the track and her run was wiped out.

Results for Qualifying Round 4
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 2 - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 46th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: James Day Runs 8.123/85.47, Now #20
Best prior run: 8.087/86.47, Was #20
Right Lane: Terry Haddock No Time, Now #21
Best prior run: 8.331/88.25, Was #21
3:40 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 24 percent, barometer 28.94 inches, adjusted altitude 2,569 feet, track temperature 89 degrees.

Jim Head is on the bump spot at 4.751. We will update the championship points situation when Matt Hagan comes up later in the session.

Haddock's crew did not even fire the engine before pushing the car over to the return road, so his weekend and season are over.

Day left hard, started to rattle the tires, and shut it off, his weekend and season also over.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.243/293.66, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.563/143.43, Was #18
Right Lane: Justin Schriefer No Time, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.581/101.25, Was #19
Densham got down the track under power and into the field. Schriefer lost traction in the middle of the run, tried to pedal it, and oiled the track. His 4.919 at 155.24 mph would not have qualified anyway, but the Creasy Family team runs on a tight budget and the penalty will not help that situation.

Now Tim Wilkerson is on the bump spot at 4.574.

Left Lane: Grant Downing Runs 4.385/277.37, Now #16
Best prior run: 5.370/139.79, Was #19
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.352/219.08, Now #15
Best prior run: 4.751/172.01, Was #17
Both drivers made improved runs, both got in, but Head came close to not making it, his car very loose in the final 200 feet. That bumped Wilkerson and Ron Capps. Downing is now on the bump spot.
Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.664/184.25, Now #18
Best prior run: 4.574/191.29, Was #18
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.486/197.22, Now #11
Best prior run: 4.179/296.57, Was #11
Wilkerson lost the blower belt near half track and failed to get back into the field. Pedregon also had problems on the top end, but he was already safely in the field
Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.176/290.32, Now #11
Best prior run: 4.437/250.88, Was #17
Right Lane: Bob Bode Runs 6.257/116.65, Now #10
Best prior run: 4.153/293.66, Was #10
Capps is the last car in a position to bump into the field and he did so in style. His car dropped a cylinder on the left side and tried to go to the wall, but Capps cranked the wheel over and refused to lift, bumping Downing to end the bumping process. Bode's car started to get the front end up in the air and he lifted.
Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.239/289.14, Now #14
Best prior run: 4.261/290.07, Was #15
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.302/240.81, Now #9
Best prior run: 4.153/294.88, Was #9
Troxel picked up a few hundredths to move around Densham in the order. Arend had good early numbers, started losing ground past the 660-foot marker.
Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 8.440/78.50, Now #13
Best prior run: 4.190/290.38, Was #13
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 10.620/74.15, Now #4
Best prior run: 4.114/307.93, Was #4
Oh-for-two, both up in smoke almost immediately.
Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.094/301.67, Now #4
Best prior run: 4.136/288.70, Was #7
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.077/305.70, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.085/310.34, Was #3
THe two championship contenders ended up side-by-side for their final qualifying runs. Based on bonus points awarded so far, Hagan is 41 points ahead of Force, but when you consider the "small" points for qualifying position, Force only trails by 38 points.

It was a great side-by-side show for the crowd, Hagan with his best run of the weekend, and Force doing likewise. That gives Force low ET of the session so far, puts them on opposite sides of the ladder.

We'll have to wait until the session is finished to update the situation, but it looks certain that they will be less than two rounds apart going into eliminations.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.119/307.30, Now #6
Best prior run: 4.136/306.46, Was #7
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 5.645/123.67, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.080/312.35, Was #3
Hight was up in smoke about 400 feet out. Beckman made the third-quickest run of the session, moved up one spot on the ladder.
Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.100/307.37, Now #5
Best prior run: 4.128/298.67, Was #7
Right Lane: A. Force Hood Runs 4.155/263.87, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.076/309.98, Was #1
Last pair. Two good runs, Force Hood losing traction before the stripe. Pedregon moves into third-quickest of the session and fifth on the ladder, and qualifying is complete.

The championship contenders end up second (Force) and fourth (Hagan), they are 38 points apart going into eliminations.

Results for Elimination Round 1
POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 46th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Melanie Troxel (Pro Care RX Charger) 0.100 4.260 287.66
 (L) Robert Hight (AAA of So. Cal Mustang) 0.093 4.752 176.88
11:35 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 26 percent, barometer 28.94 inches, adjusted altitude 2,464 feet, track temperature 102 degrees.

Hight and Troxel are 1-1 against each other, both prior meetings coming in the first round.

Hight led for about 400 feet, then lost traction violently, the car fishtailing a couple times. Troxel also lost traction, but was very close to the stripe, the supercharger letting go when she pedaled it. Melanie Troxel's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.051), 330 ft(-0.061), 660ft(0.086). MOV: 0.4857 seconds (more than 100 feet).

THat brings a miserable countdown to an end for the 2009 champion, who did not win a round during the 2010 Countdown.

 (W) Del Worsham (Al-Anabi Racing Camry) 0.093 4.132 302.14
 (L) Ron Capps (NAPA Charger) 0.089 4.208 294.88
This is the 44th time Capps and Worsham have faced each other, Capps holding a 31-12 edge in prior events, 12-7 in round one.

This was a good drag race, but Worsham had the quicker car today and won by over a car length. He will have lane choice against Troxel in round two.

 (W) Tony Pedregon (Slick 50 Impala SS) 0.043 4.230 289.63
 (L) Cruz Pedregon (Snap-On Solara) 0.056 4.221 292.52
This is the 32nd time the two Pedregon brothers have faced each other in eliminations, Tony holding a 26-15 edge, 10-2 in first round matchups. However, Cruz qualified Tony this weekend and has been running well in the second half of this season.

Both drivers had good reaction times, Tony with a hundredth in hand at the tree, and then it was a very close race. Tony Pedregon's incremental margins: 60ft(0.019), 330 ft(0.028), 660ft(0.016). MOV: 0.0046 seconds (approximately 24 inches), winning on a holeshot.

 (W) Ashley Force Hood (Castrol GTX Mustang) 0.123 4.113 307.02
 (L) Jim Head (Head Racing Solara) 0.100 4.248 282.36
Force-Hood is 4-2 against Head in prior races, but this is the first time they have ever met in the first round.

Head had a couple hundredths advantage on the tree, but dropped a cylinder early in the run and Force Hood ran low ET of the round so far for the win.

 (W) Bob Tasca III (Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustan 0.065 4.148 303.57
 (L) Matt Hagan (DieHard Charger) 0.061 DQ - Oildown
Hagan needs to win to prevent John Force from gaining one of the two rounds he needs to pass Hagan for the championship, but Ford driver and Force friend Tasca holds a 3-1 record against Hagan in prior events. Tasca won their only prior round one meeting, at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park last year.

This was a great drag race, the two drivers just four thousandths apart at the green. Hagan led well past the 660-foot marker, but Tasca surged to the lead on the top end when Hagan's engine let go to win one for the Ford team. Bob Tasca III's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.036), 330 ft(-0.034), 660ft(-0.019). MOV: 0.0102 seconds (approximately 4 feet). To add insult to injury, Hagan's engine damage left some oil on the track, so his time and speed (4.162 at 290.44) do not count.

Tasca will have lane choice against Tony Pedregon in round two.

 (W) Bob Bode (Alard Machine Products Impala SS) 0.013 4.200 299.46
 (L) Jack Beckman (Valvoline Charger) 0.101 4.146 306.60
This is the fourth time Beckman and Bode have raced each other, Beckman holding a 2-1 edge in prior events, 2-0 in round one.

Bode drilled the tree and had a huge holeshot, then made a clean run to win by a car length. Bob Bode's incremental margins: 60ft(0.086), 330 ft(0.069), 660ft(0.051). MOV: 0.0344 seconds (approximately 15 feet).

 (W) Jeff Arend (DHL Solara) 0.166 4.292 284.45
 (L) Paul Lee (Jim Dunn/Canidae/Lucas Oil Impala -9.999(R) NT-Broke Before Staging
Lee and Arend have only faced each other once before, in the opening round at Englishtown this year. Arend won that one.

Arend wins this one too, the easy way, Lee's car silent at the end of the burnout. That was a break for Arend, his car trailed a red-brown cloud of partially-burned nitromethane for much of the run. He faces Force Hood in round 2, Force Hood has lane choice.

 (W) John Force (Castrol GTX Mustang) 0.092 4.116 307.23
 (L) Gary Densham (NealInvestments/LawsonRock&Oi 0.121 5.498 135.96
This is the 44th time Force and Densham have faced each other, Force holding a 34-9 mark in prior races, 21-3 in round one meetings. Force needs this round win and one more to win the championship.

Densham lost traction before half track, Force ran second-low ET of the round for the win. He will have lane choice against Bode in round two.

Worsham is 1 - 0 against Troxel in prior events, that win coming in the second round of the Spring race in Las Vegas.

Troxel evens the score here, Worsham up in smoke immediately. She dropped a cylinder on the top end and slowed, but Worsham was not in the picture by then.

 (W) Jeff Arend (DHL Solara) 0.077 4.186 299.13
 (L) Ashley Force Hood (Castrol GTX Mustang) 0.111 4.642 215.65

Arend evens the tally, Force Hood losing traction near half track.
