Results for Qualifying Round 3
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 2 - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 47th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Right Lane: Michael Ray Runs 6.931/193.29, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.900/192.63, Was #6
11:02 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 62 degrees, relative humidity 52 percent, barometer 28.74 inches, adjusted altitude 2,061 feet, track temperature 71 degrees.

Mike Berry is back at the track, but will be a spectator for the rest of the weekend. Berry received neck injuries when he was turning the engine over manually and the engine kicked back. The wrench hit his neck and the resulting cut took several stitches to repair.

In his words, "It wasn't as bad as it looked."

The field size is now 16 and there won't be a bump time for a few pairs.

No improvement for Ray.

Left Lane: Hector Arana Jr Runs 7.232/145.86, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.832/194.04, Was #2
Right Lane: Karen Stoffer Runs 6.925/192.99, Now #11
                                  No Prior Run
The run order this round is based on Round 2 performance, so Arana runs early because he had a bad run yesterday. This one was on a very quick pace to half track, a full tenth quicker than Ray at that point, then his engine went sour and he slowed. Stoffer made a solid run, her best of the weekend.
Left Lane: Larry Cook Runs 7.165/181.37, Now #14
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Matt Smith Runs 7.532/193.63, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.896/193.46, Was #5
Smith's bike went sour early in the run. He finally got it "up on the step" and finished with a big speed, bad ET.
Left Lane: Freddie Camarena Runs 18.259/41.56, Now #16
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Michael Phillips Runs 6.955/193.74, Now #14
                                  No Prior Run
Camarena's engine popped and banged and he shut it off. Full passes for Phillips. Technically, Camarena is on the bump spot.
Left Lane: Wesley Wells Runs 8.446/110.56, Now #17
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: James Surber Runs 7.222/185.61, Now #16
                                  No Prior Run
Two more off-pace runs, Wells off the power before half track.
Left Lane: Katie Sullivan Runs 7.044/187.21, Now #16
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Fredrik Fredlund Runs 6.995/191.92, Now #15
                                  No Prior Run
Nice run by Fredlund, a career-best ET and speed for the Finnish rider.
Left Lane: Justin Finley Runs 7.004/192.93, Now #16
                                  No Prior Run

                                  No Prior Run
Harris' bike sputtered and died. Finley got in, but on the bump spot.
Left Lane: Bailey Whitaker Runs 6.960/190.16, Now #15
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Steve Johnson No Time, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.905/192.22, Was #8
Johnson broke on the launch, stopping a hundred feet out. Whitaker had a moment or two in the shutdown area, the chain breaking as he crossed the finish line. The chain folded the rear body up and the lack of a chain made stopping a little sporty.
Left Lane: Jim Underdahl Runs 7.075/191.70, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.922/193.07, Was #10
Right Lane: Chip Ellis Runs 6.902/192.44, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.954/189.42, Was #13
Fredrik Fredlund is on the bump spot at 6.995. These two are already in, but there are a couple still in line with no time yet.

Underdahl could not match his first run, but Ellis mad a nice run to move up the list and into the top half of the field.

Left Lane: Angie Smith Runs 6.902/194.21, Now #7
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Matt Guidera Runs 6.996/191.05, Now #18
                                  No Prior Run
These two are the last ones in line with no prior time. Both made clean runs, no visible problems. Smith got into the top half of the field with a career-best speed. Guidera ran his best speed of the season, but the ET left him outside the field.
Left Lane: LE Tonglet Runs 6.894/192.28, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.930/191.21, Was #14
Right Lane: Shawn Gann Runs 6.878/194.35, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.911/191.43, Was #11
Nice runs in both lanes and both move up to the top half of the field. Gann runs a career-best speed and ET and that is the quickest of the session so far.
Left Lane: Hector Arana Runs 12.205/176.84, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.871/194.91, Was #4
Right Lane: Jerry Savoie Runs 8.270/112.85, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.905/192.33, Was #11
Arana's bike made a very bad launch, sounded like it may have been in the wrong gear, and turned hard right. He almost came to a stop before driving off the track. Savoie had problems before half track.
Left Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 6.830/196.96, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.820/197.54, Was #1
Right Lane: Eddie Krawiec Runs 29.513/24.09, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.853/195.99, Was #3
Krawiec had problems immediately and limped down the track. By contrast, his teammate made an awesome pass, easily the quickest of the session.

Results for Elimination Round 1
POMONA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 47th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Angie Smith (Matt Smith Racing Buell) 0.041 6.961 191.54
 (L) Michael Ray (Star Racing Buell) 0.040 6.997 191.27
12:16 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 72 degrees, relative humidity 43 percent, barometer 28.78 inches, adjusted altitude 2,673 feet, track temperature 91 degrees.

The championship scenario in Pro Stock Motorcycle is pretty simple - if Eddie Krawiec gets to the semifinals, he is the champion. If he gets to round two, Hector Arana Jr. must win the event and set a national ET record or Krawiec is the champion. If Krawiec does not get out of round one, Arana must win the event.

Dead-even at the start, then Smith slowly pulled ahead for the win.

Angie Smith's incremental margins: 60ft(0.019), 330 ft(0.022), 660ft(0.028), 1,000ft(0.032). MOV: 0.0352 seconds (approximately 10 feet).

 (W) Matt Smith (Matt Smith Racing Buell) 0.082 6.944 191.48
 (L) Chip Ellis (Kuryakyn/Lartigue Racing Buell) 0.063 6.967 191.54
Ellis had a couple hundredths in hand at the start, but Smith led by half track and held on for the win. Matt Smith's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.002), 330 ft(0.009), 660ft(0.010), 1,000ft(0.007). MOV: 0.0041 seconds (approximately 14 inches).
 (W) LE Tonglet (Nitro Fish Suzuki) 0.058 6.942 191.05
 (L) Jerry Savoie (White Alligator Racing Suzuki 0.022 7.076 175.87
This is the first time Tonglet and Savoie have faced each other in eliminations.

Savoie had a great light, but could not keep pace with Tonglet. LE Tonglet's MOV: 0.0985 seconds (approximately 25 feet).

 (W) Andrew Hines (Screamin' Eagle/Vance & Hines 0.069 6.865 196.79
 (L) Michael Phillips (The Edge Suzuki) 0.021 6.999 192.52
Hines is 16 - 3 against Phillips in prior events.

Phillips had a great light, but Hines made yet another very quick run and won going away. He will have lane choice against Angie Smith in round 2.

 (W) Hector Arana Jr (Lucas Oil Buell) 0.084 6.836 195.28
 (L) Justin Finley (Next Level Racing Suzuki) 0.078 7.044 192.93
Arana Jr is 1 - 0 against Finley in prior events.

Arana gets a big win - it's also quick enough to back up a national ET record. He will have lane choice against Matt Smith in round 2.

 (W) Eddie Krawiec (Screamin' Eagle/Vance & Hine 0.024 6.873 196.22
 (L) Karen Stoffer (GEICO Powersports Suzuki) 0.018 6.993 191.54
Great lights in both lanes and Krawiec did what he's done all weekend, winning easily. That forces Arana Jr. to both win the event and get a national ET record. Krawiec has lane choice against reigning champion Tonglet in round 2.
 (W) Hector Arana (Lucas Oil Buell) 0.008 6.905 193.38
 (L) Jim Underdahl (Suzuki Extended Protection S 0.057 7.060 189.60
Arana had a double-oh light and an easy win.
 (W) Steve Johnson (Steve Johnson Racing Suzuki) 0.049 NT-No Show
 (L) Shawn Gann (Gann Speed Buell) -0.011(R) 6.948 192.44
Gann went red, then Johnson broke at the line. He saw the red light in the other lane and stood up with his arms upraised. He will not have lane choice against Arana in round 2.
