Results for Qualifying Round 1
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 2 - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 47th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: B. Harrington Runs 7.587/115.44, Now #1
Right Lane: Jordan Pawlick Runs 10.467/83.16, Now #2
2:42 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 73 degrees, relative humidity 28 percent, barometer 28.96 inches, adjusted altitude 2,407 feet, track temperature 78 degrees.

Pawlick shook and lifted. Harrington's car shook, he pedaled, the car turned right and he almost crossed the centerline, then lifted.

Left Lane: Brian Smith No Time, Now #4
Right Lane: Jeff Ashwell Runs 8.968/99.37, Now #2
Both cars shook hard on the launch and both made hard right turns. Ashwell shut it off without hitting anything. Smith tried to pedal and continue, but the car came back with a hard left turn and he body-slammed the left wall, so his ten-second run won't count.
Left Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 8.915/99.85, Now #3
Right Lane: Keeter Ray Runs 7.865/124.57, Now #2
Lots of tire shake, tire spin and tail-wagging, but not much acceleration and both eventually shut off.
Left Lane: S. Westerfield Runs 5.677/256.21, Now #1
Right Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 6.170/180.14, Now #2
Bellemeur's car was taking dead aim at the 1,000-foot timing reflector and he finally had to lift to avoid it. Westerfield stayed more-or-less in the groove and made a full pass.
Left Lane: Paul Gill Runs 5.561/261.93, Now #1
Right Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 20.170/76.22, Now #9
This is Tigges' first appearance at Pomona and Gill's second.

It sounded like something broke in Tigges' driveline and he coasted through, the engine silent. Gill made a nice run to take over the top spot, running a career-best speed.

Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.699/260.71, Now #3
Right Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.857/241.58, Now #4
Gordon made a strong effort, ended up in the third spot. Thompson was a few hundredths back to about 800 feet, then it looked like his engine started going away, trailing light smoke as the car slowed.
Left Lane: Kris Hool Runs 5.829/238.93, Now #4
Right Lane: S. Gasparrelli Runs 7.805/91.93, Now #8
It sounded like gasparrelli popped the burst panel at half track and his car slowed with the chutes out. Hool made a full pass, but his car fell off the pace on the top end.
Left Lane: J. Lombardo Jr. Runs 5.628/258.76, Now #2
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.642/260.56, Now #3
Lombardo took the Division 7 championship away from Payne last weekend with a final-round win against Clint Thompson. Thompson also figured in Payne's outcome, beating Payne in the first round.

Two nice runs, Lombardo getting to the stripe first. Both were about a tenth off Gill's pace, however.

Left Lane: Roger Bateman Runs 5.596/257.43, Now #3
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.559/260.56, Now #1
Last pair. Nice runs, a pair. Bartone got to the stripe five thousandths ahead of Bateman to take over the top spot, Bateman had to settle for third. Jordan Pawlick is on the bump spot at 10.467 after one round.

Results for Qualifying Round 2
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 2 - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 47th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 5.754/254.47, Now #9
Best prior run: 20.170/76.22, Was #17
Right Lane: Brian Smith Runs 5.728/255.77, Now #8
                                  No Prior Run
10:59 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 69 degrees, relative humidity 31 percent, barometer 28.81 inches, adjusted altitude 2,337 feet, track temperature 76 degrees.

Jordan Pawlick is on the bump spot at 10.467.

Smith's crew did a good job of patching the left side of the body after yesterday's wall-banger, the only visible evidence being bare spots at the nose and tail.

Both cars made good runs and moved into the middle of the field, but Smith's chutes did not come out. He went into the sand very hard, turning left, ending with the car upside down and sideways against the left end of the net. Smith is fine. The sand and all the safety equipment did their jobs, but it's unlikely the car will be ready for eliminations tomorrow.

Now Sean O'Bannon is on the bump spot at 8.915.

Left Lane: Jordan Pawlick Runs 6.035/245.40, Now #13
Best prior run: 10.467/83.16, Was #18
Right Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 5.898/241.80, Now #12
Best prior run: 8.915/99.85, Was #16
11:45 a.m. The overturned car was removed fairly quickly, but repairs to the catch net took quite awhile. Meanwhile, the skies overhead have steadily cleared and now there are just scattered clouds, so the weather looks good for at least the next few hours.

Pawlick's car shook, danced, and got very sideways. He did a good job of straightening it out and finishing the run to move into the field. O'Bannon made a full pass, but well off his usual pace. He no longer on the bump spot, but both drivers are near the bottom of the field.

Now Steve Gasparrelli is on the bump spot at 7.805.

Left Lane: Jeff Ashwell Runs 5.868/245.76, Now #13
Best prior run: 8.968/99.37, Was #18
Right Lane: B. Harrington Runs 5.762/249.53, Now #10
Best prior run: 7.587/115.44, Was #15
Both drivers made full passes, Ashwell's the crookeder of the two.

Now Sean Bellemeur is on the bump spot at 6.170.

Left Lane: Keeter Ray Runs 8.711/100.19, Now #18
Best prior run: 7.865/124.57, Was #18
Right Lane: Kris Hool Runs 5.783/255.24, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.829/238.93, Was #11
Ray shook, the car turned left, then the pipes went wet and he coasted through. Hool improved slightly, stayed 11th. Bellemeur stays on the bump spot.
Left Lane: S. Gasparrelli Runs 6.480/253.66, Now #17
Best prior run: 7.805/91.93, Was #17
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.735/258.76, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.699/260.71, Was #7
Gasparrelli lost traction immediately, pedaled, and managed to get it hooked up to finish the run. He improved by over a second, stayed 17th. Gordon made a clean run, failed to improve.
Left Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 5.960/255.24, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.170/180.14, Was #16
Right Lane: S. Westerfield Runs 5.636/257.28, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.677/256.21, Was #6
Bellemeur chattered the tire immediately, did a quick pedal job, and completed the run. Meanwhile, Westerfield made a very nice run to move up a spot.
Left Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 6.528/136.87, Now #12
Best prior run: 5.857/241.58, Was #12
Right Lane: J. Lombardo Jr. Runs 5.654/258.71, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.628/258.76, Was #4
Thompson "blowed it up" before half track, with a BANG, followed by lots of smoke and two chutes.Lombardo made a clean run, just a but off his first-round pace.
Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.590/261.22, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.642/260.56, Was #6
Right Lane: Roger Bateman Runs 5.563/258.57, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.596/257.43, Was #3
Two very nice runs here, no problems in either lane. Both drivers improved over their earlier efforts.
Left Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.546/262.28, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.559/260.56, Was #1
Right Lane: Paul Gill Runs 5.566/260.51, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.561/261.93, Was #2
Last pair. Two more very nice runs, with small improvements by both drivers and no change in the order.

Results for Qualifying Round 3
POMONA, Calif. - POMONA 2 - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 47th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 5.589/255.92, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.898/241.80, Was #14
Right Lane: Keeter Ray Runs 5.635/255.48, Now #7
Best prior run: 7.865/124.57, Was #18
3:36 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees, relative humidity 28 percent, barometer 28.75 inches, adjusted altitude 2,457 feet, track temperature 78 degrees.

Jordan Pawlick is on the bump spot at 6.035.

Ray went from last on the list to the middle of the field on this run, right down the groove. O'Bannon also carded his best run of the event, by three tenths, to move into the middle of the top half.

They did a quick drag-and-mop in Ray's lane, appeared to be alcohol.

Now Sean Bellemeur is on the bump spot at 5.960.

Left Lane: Kris Hool Runs 7.075/142.04, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.783/255.24, Was #13
Right Lane: S. Gasparrelli Runs 5.799/255.19, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.480/253.66, Was #18
Hool's car went left, he pedaled, the car went left again and he appeared to graze the wall. The run was too slow to count anyway. Meanwhile, Gasparrelli made a "Hail Mary" run and got into the field. Now Jeff Ashwell is on the bump spot at 5.868.
Left Lane: B. Harrington Runs 5.813/212.69, Now #12
Best prior run: 5.762/249.53, Was #12
Right Lane: Jordan Pawlick No Time, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.035/245.40, Was #18
Pawlick was bumped from the field just moments ago. Although the first-alternate will probably run in eliminations tomorrow (Brian Smith probably won't be able to run tomorrow), nobody wants to get in that way.

Well, the run (6.170 seconds) wasn't quick enough to get him anyway, but Pawlick's car went directly from the starting line to the 660-foot timing block and took it out, so it didn't count anyway. Harrington made a clean run, failed to improve.

Right Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 5.688/254.86, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.960/255.24, Was #17
Bellemeur made a nice run to bump into the middle of the field.
Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.590/259.41, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.699/260.71, Was #10
Right Lane: Jeff Ashwell Runs 6.181/230.25, Now #17
Best prior run: 5.868/245.76, Was #17
Bellemeur's good fortune was ASshwell's bad fortune, and he failed to improve on a snaking run here, so he will go into eliminations as the first alternate. Gordon, on the other hand, improved a tenth to move into the top half of the field.
Left Lane: S. Westerfield Runs 14.388/40.95, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.636/257.28, Was #9
Right Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.663/252.43, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.857/241.58, Was #16
Westerfield popped the burst panel 200 feet out, deploying the chutes. Thompson's car was darting left and right, but he stayed with it to move up several spots.
Left Lane: J. Lombardo Jr. Runs 5.636/258.81, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.628/258.76, Was #7
Right Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 15.779/120.74, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.754/254.47, Was #13
Tigges spun the tires hard, the RPMs going "to the Moon." Lombardo made a nice run, just a few thousandths slower than his first and a couple hundredths better than his worst.
Left Lane: Roger Bateman Runs 5.586/256.99, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.563/258.57, Was #3
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.607/260.06, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.590/261.22, Was #5
Two nice runs, no visible problems in either lane.

Roger Bateman's incremental times: 60ft-0.947 sec., 330ft-2.480, 660ft-3.680/206.13 mph, 1,000ft-4.710.
Jay Payne's incremental times: 60ft-0.970 sec., 330ft-2.511, 660ft-3.716/206.45 mph, 1,000ft-4.741.

Left Lane: Paul Gill Runs 5.504/262.59, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.561/261.93, Was #2
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 11.895/57.69, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.546/262.28, Was #1
Both drivers were loaded for bear. Bartone's car may have gotten fluid under a tire because it made several quick moves before he could shut it off. Meanwhile, Gill improved by several hundredths to take over the top spot.

Paul Gill's incremental times: 60ft-0.947 sec., 330ft-2.452, 660ft-3.637/208.30 mph, 1,000ft-4.647.

 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Keeter Ray (Keeter Ray Racing Mustang) 0.075 5.695 249.03
 (L) Shane Westerfield (CP Pistons Monte Carlo) -0.015(R) 6.744 153.51
1:27 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 65 degrees, relative humidity 53 percent, barometer 28.71 inches, adjusted altitude 2,327 feet, track temperature 74 degrees.

Ray took several shots at the centerline, missed on all of them. Westerfield was slowing with the chutes out, can't say why because I was too busy watching Ray.

 (W) John Lombardo Jr. (NAPA/Pro Series/Lucas Oi 0.050 5.681 259.06
 (L) Clint Thompson (Cascade Chevrolet Monte Car 0.119 5.659 253.75
Two tough opponents squared off here and the race lived up to expectations - unless you are a Clint Thompson fan. Thompson was tardy at the green and Lombardo went right down the groove for the holeshot win.

John Lombardo Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-0.962 sec., 330ft-2.550, 660ft-3.776/203.92 mph, 1,000ft-4.811.
Clint Thompson's incremental times: 60ft-0.944 sec., 330ft-2.520, 660ft-3.736/204.11 mph, 1,000ft-4.774.

 (W) Sean Bellemeur (MasterCam/Lucas Oil Camaro) 0.040 5.708 254.23
 (L) Doug Gordon (Morro Bay Cabinets Racing Mont 0.042 13.071 65.19
Gordon shook the tires, made a couple hard moves left and right, and he shut it down.Bellemeurleft right with Gordon, then pulled away easily, with no visible problems.
 (W) Jay Payne (FireIce Mustang) 0.072 5.617 259.96
 (L) Jeff Ashwell (Mustang) 0.093 6.321 180.19
Ashwell was in as an alternate for Brian Smith. Ashwell's car was way to the right, very close to the wall for most of the run. He finally got it out of the grips of the "wall magnet," but Payne was long-gone by then, running low ET of the round so far.
 (W) Sean O'Bannon (Forest River RV Monte Carlo) 0.054 5.580 258.27
 (L) Fred Tigges (Tigges Racing Avenger) -0.089(R) 5.673 254.23
Tigges left early, but it probably didn't matter because O'Bannon ran the quickest run of the round so far. He will have lane choice against Payne in the quarterfinals.
 (W) Bernie Harrington (Harrington Motorsport/CR 0.080 6.992 141.59
 (L) Roger Bateman (YNot Racing Mustang) 0.058 NT-No Show
bateman went to the right almost immediately. He fought it, lost the battle and crossed the centerline, clipping a timing block when he pulled back into his own lane. Harrington had problems with early tire shake, was well back when Bateman crossed into his lane. Harrington will race Bellemeur in round 2, Bellemeur has lane choice.
 (W) Tony Bartone (Centre Pointe Collision Musta 0.063 5.504 262.85
 (L) Kris Hool (Gripper Monte Carlo) 0.042 5.897 229.70
Hool left first, but Bartione made that up before going 60 feet. He made the quickest run of the round, tying Paul Gill's #1 qualifying run and will have lane choice against Lombardo in round 2.
 (W) Paul Gill (Moduline Mustang) 0.167 5.528 261.83
 (L) Steve Gasparrelli (Gasparrelli Racing Monte 0.045 5.721 255.00
This was Gill's first #1 qualifier since 1999 and his 4th overall. He spotted Gasparrelli more than a tenth on the tree, still ran him down for the win, by a car length. He will have lane choice against Ray in round 2.

 (L) Tony Bartone (Centre Pointe Collision Musta 0.097 5.594 236.22
Bartone is 4 - 1 against Lombardo Jr. in prior events.

Lombardo had several hundredths in hand with a good light, then Bartone's car took the long route to the finish line, getting way left of the groove, and slowed in the final stretch, trailing lots of white smoke. Lombardo was on time and went right down the groove g=for a holeshot win and lane choice against Bellemeur in the semifinals.
