Results for Qualifying Round 1
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - GAINESVILLE - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 44th annual Amalie Oil NHRA Gatornationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 5.522/259.81, Now #1
Right Lane: Paul Noakes Runs 5.588/263.51, Now #2
Weather conditions: air temperature 65 degrees, relative humidity 28 percent, barometer 30.08 inches, adjusted altitude 561 feet, track temperature 74 degrees.

11:19 a.m.

Brand danced over toward the wall, then made a couple of wiggles but never lifted. .943 60-foot time for Brand, .953 for Noakes.

Left Lane: John Bojec Runs 5.611/246.80, Now #3
Right Lane: Cassie Simonton Runs 8.307/108.85, Now #4
Simonton shook halfway to the 60-foot cones before lifting, hope the team has some aspirin or some-such... Bojec's motor puffed a big plume of smoke when he clicked it the finish line. The track is dry, but his crew was clearly worried by what they saw from the starting line.
Left Lane: Andy Bohl Runs 5.565/258.12, Now #2
Right Lane: Mark Rogers Runs 6.589/139.72, Now #5
Looks like Rogers may have kicked a few rods loose, his car flashed flames out both sides right at the halfway point. Bohl's team was happy with that run.

We've got stuff.... 11:29 a.m.
Left Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.679/263.05, Now #5
Right Lane: Ray Drew Runs 6.891/141.91, Now #7
11:40 a.m. Manzo's burnouts are among the best in the TAFC category - smooth, even, straight and long. Reminds one of another legend in TAFC racing - Pat Austin.

Drew spit out a blower belt just past the halfway point, Manzo's .963 60-foot time was 3rd best of the round so far, he ends this run in the five spot.
Left Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 5.784/255.10, Now #7
Right Lane: Chris Foster Runs 5.523/262.59, Now #2
Ferro and Foster were side-by-side till the halfway point, the Foster surged away at the top end of the track. Chris Foster's incremental times: 60ft-0.957 sec., 330ft-2.480, 660ft-3.664/209.43 mph, 1,000ft-4.670.
Left Lane: John Headley Runs 7.245/141.27, Now #10
Right Lane: Dan Pomponio Runs 15.894/39.82, Now #12
Pomponio lit up the rear slicks right at the hit and lifted. Headley got over near the wall, pedaled and then drove near the wall, then lifted after the motor sounded sour and coasted the rest of the way. It wasn't pretty, but both drivers have a time slip, and are in the field for now anyway.
Left Lane: Todd Veney Runs 5.790/251.49, Now #8
Right Lane: J. Lombardo Jr. Runs 7.895/118.23, Now #12
Lombardo dropped a cylinder on the right side right off the line, then had a flash of flame at about the 60-foot cone. Nice base line pass for Veney - Todd Veney's incremental times: 60ft-1.013 sec., 330ft-2.598, 660ft-3.838/199.64 mph, 1,000ft-4.897.

The track is dry, so we move on.
Left Lane: Kris Hool Runs 5.560/262.54, Now #3
Hool is a long way from his home in Casper Wyoming, he runs just .0036 off his career best in the left lane. Kris Hool's incremental times: 60ft-0.967 sec., 330ft-2.495, 660ft-3.688/208.81 mph, 1,000ft-4.703.

Results for Qualifying Round 2
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - GAINESVILLE - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 44th annual Amalie Oil NHRA Gatornationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Duane Beers Runs 8.640/102.98, Now #15

Best prior run: 7.245/141.27, Was #12
6:37 p.m. Track temps have cooled to 92 degrees, and the shade now covers most of the burnout box. The shadow from the tower will grow rapidly down track as the sun sets to the west. Beers did not make the call in round one, this is his first pass of the weekend.

Just before the staging process Headley's team shut him off, evidently he had some sort of liquid leaking. Beers went out about 200 feet and got off the loud pedal.
Left Lane: Dan Pomponio Runs 5.623/257.87, Now #7
Best prior run: 15.894/39.82, Was #16

Nice pass for Pomponio, right down the groove. Veney also improves but remains in the 9th spot.
Left Lane: Cassie Simonton Runs 10.025/123.98, Now #15
Best prior run: 8.307/108.85, Was #15

Simonton hooked left at the start and lifted.
Left Lane: J. Lombardo Jr. Runs 5.510/264.55, Now #1
Best prior run: 7.895/118.23, Was #14

Best prior run: 5.679/263.05, Was #9
Manzo shook, made a move over toward the centerline, and decided to call it a day. Lombardo danced around at the top end, but vaults all the way to the top of the heap - John Lombardo Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-0.947 sec., 330ft-2.474, 660ft-3.654/210.77 mph, 1,000ft-4.660.
Left Lane: Ray Drew Runs 5.715/255.82, Now #11

Right Lane: John Bojec Runs 5.648/251.77, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.611/246.80, Was #7
Bojec's Monte Carlo was on a rail - nary a wiggle the whole way. The run looked faster than that... Drew was quicker, but not as smooth going down the track here at Gainesville.
Left Lane: Mark Rogers Runs 6.406/236.42, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.589/139.72, Was #13

Best prior run: 5.565/258.12, Was #5
Rogers almost creeped through the beams, luckily the green came up before he did and he only carded a -.346 red and still got a time slip. Bohl simply blasted to the top spot with a new career best speed to boot. Andy Bohl's incremental times: 60ft-0.942 sec., 330ft-2.454, 660ft-3.639/209.17 mph, 1,000ft-4.649.
Left Lane: Paul Noakes Runs 9.461/91.43, Now #6

Hool just about hit the wall, he was way over in the marbles... Noakes also got out of it early.
Left Lane: Chris Foster Runs 5.502/262.64, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.523/262.59, Was #4

It's warmer than it was yesterday.

Headley was off the loud pedal before the halfway point after drifting over toward the wall. Simonton's first full pass of the weekend moves him up two spots.

Left Lane: Todd Veney Runs 5.634/254.66, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.732/251.58, Was #12

Best prior run: 5.715/255.82, Was #12
Manzo 12th???? Once again mechanical gremlins claim a run for Manzo - the car went silent just past the tree. When was the last time Manzo qualified in the bottom half of a national event field? Inquiring minds here want to know.... How bout 2010 in Redding PA!

Drew bumped Manzo into the 12th spot with a stellar run in the right lane - Ray Drew's incremental times: 60ft-0.983 sec., 330ft-2.500, 660ft-3.689/208.81 mph, 1,000ft-4.707.
Left Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 11.381/83.58, Now #10

Best prior run: 5.623/257.87, Was #9
Ferro shook hard, then hopped when he shifted and clicked it off. Pomponio got near the centerline at the top end, but crossed the stripe before he got to the finish line cones.
Left Lane: John Bojec Runs 9.423/94.03, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.611/246.80, Was #8
Right Lane: Paul Noakes Runs 5.642/262.08, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.588/263.51, Was #7
Tire shake claims Bojec as well, he tried to pedal it, but only got more tire shake. Left lane looks pretty wild with all the tire shake marks out past the tree.
Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 10.340/81.92, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.522/259.81, Was #4
Right Lane: J. Lombardo Jr. Runs 5.498/265.17, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.510/264.55, Was #3
Brand didn't shake, he spun the tires all the way over to the marbles near the wall, so now there's a nice wide black stripe through all the tire shake marks in the left lane. Lombardo was on a rail - just .2 mph off a career best in speed for the Brea CA driver, and he claims the top spot for now.
Left Lane: Andy Bohl Runs 6.932/141.49, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.503/263.26, Was #3
Right Lane: Chris Foster Runs 5.522/262.28, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.502/262.64, Was #2
Bohl got over into the marbles and had to lift when the tires lost traction at the halfway point. So we end TAFC Qualifying with John Lombardo Jr at the top of the heap, and Manzo 12th.... 11:21 a.m.

 (L) Duane Beers (Bonafide Coll/FG Rigging Fireb 0.076 6.116 174.57
This is the first time Beers and Lombardo Jr. have faced each other in eliminations. Beers had smoke coming out all eight pipes at the same time from about 1000-foot on, never a good sign. Lombardo has got a very fast, and very consistent racecar this weekend.
 (W) John Headley (HB Racing Mustang) 0.149 5.959 230.33
 (L) Chris Foster (Foster Racing Mustang) 0.100 7.526 128.15
On paper Headley is a huge underdog for this round of racing - but drag races are not run on paper. Foster was all over the lane, got right near the centerline stripe trying to pedal and catch Headley, then the motor went silent in Foster's Mustang. Our first upset of the day in TAFC is a big one, the number two qualifier is done for the weekend.

Headley's run was just eight thousandths of a second from a new career best ET for the Pennsylvania driver btw...

 (W) Todd Veney (Permatex/Follow A Dream Impala) 0.078 5.649 255.73
 (L) Ray Drew (Ray Drew Racing Firebird) 0.095 5.655 261.02
After a mini staging duel complete with a couple of throttle blips, Drew and Veney treat the crowd to a great drag race - Todd Veney's incremental margins: 60ft(0.016), 330 ft(0.030), 660ft(0.041), 1,000ft(0.037). MOV: 0.0236 seconds (approximately 9 feet).
 (W) Paul Noakes (Meritor-Euclid-Harman HVS Must 0.024 5.688 259.76
 (L) Mickey Ferro (Ryco Hydraulics Monte Carlo) 0.040 11.137 87.59
Ferro smoked the tires right at the hit. He pedaled once, but Noakes was long gone. He'll face Headley in round two, and Headley will have lane choice.
 (W) Dan Pomponio (Pomponio Racing Monte Carlo) 0.040 5.630 257.87
 (L) John Bojec (Speed City Monte Carlo) 0.088 5.593 256.06
Just two thousandths of a second separated these two in qualifying - Bojec won the qualifying battles, but Pomponio won the eliminations war, and he did it on a holeshot. Dan Pomponio's MOV: 0.0112 seconds (approximately 4 feet).

Dan will race number one qualifier Lombardo in the next round, and Lombardo will have lane choice.

 (W) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding Monte Carlo) 0.067 5.585 260.06
 (L) Cassie Simonton (KonRodzRacing.com Monte Ca 0.094 5.679 256.75
Good side-by-side drag racing - at the stripe it's Brand by more than two car lengths. His team will have all evening to decide their strategy to take out Frank Manzo in the next round, and Manzo will have lane choice.
 (W) Andy Bohl (Competition Products Mustang) 0.120 5.565 261.12
 (L) Mark Rogers (Sportz Truck Tents by Napier F -0.053(R) 5.886 237.55
The last two cars of the day end racing with a redlight. Bohl will face Veney, and Bohl will also have lane choice tomorrow. That's it for Day three here in Gainesville - tomorrow it's all eliminations, and new champions for the 2013 NHRA Gatornationals. Goodnight from Gainesville! 6:40 p.m.

 (L) Andy Bohl (Competition Products Mustang) 0.080 8.077 80.18
After a bit of a staging duel Bohl went in first. Bohl had his hands full when his Mustang made a very hard move toward the 300-foot cone. He managed to miss the cone and stay in his lane, but that was the end of his weekend. Veney ran his best pass of the weekend in the other lane, and will have lance choice in the semis again Noakes.

Todd Veney's incremental times: 60ft-0.978 sec., 330ft-2.504, 660ft-3.704/206.32 mph, 1,000ft-4.730.

 (L) Frank Manzo (Al Anabi Racing Monte Carlo) 0.031 5.668 262.33
Manzo shook and had to pedal it, by the time he got back on the throttle, Brand was well on is way to the finish line. Brand had never raced Manzo in eliminations before, so he's now 1-0 against the champion. Dale Brand's MOV: 0.0638 seconds (approximately 25 feet).

Results for Elimination Round 3
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - FastNews Network - Results of round 3 eliminations in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 44th annual Amalie Oil NHRA Gatornationals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Dan Pomponio (Pomponio Racing Monte Carlo) 0.038 5.554 260.31
 (L) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding Monte Carlo) 0.037 5.895 216.62
Weather conditions: air temperature 73 degrees, relative humidity 37 percent, barometer 29.86 inches, adjusted altitude 1,491 feet, track temperature 92 degrees.

Clouds have moved in, so the track has started to cool off some. Conditions are excellent for this round of TAFC.

Brand started trailing smoke out the left side about half track, it steadily grew in size and volume till it erupted in a huge cloud at the finish line. The trucks roll to clean up what didn't burn and is on the racetrack. 2:54 p.m.

 (W) Todd Veney (Permatex/Follow A Dream Impala) 0.065 5.755 212.16
 (L) Paul Noakes (Meritor-Euclid-Harman HVS Must -0.012(R) 11.044 74.82
The heads up rivalry stands at 1-1 with these two drivers - bragging rights are also at stake...

Noakes too a big shot at the tree, and cut it a little too short. Veney had a flash of fire out the bottom right side of the engine at the top end and coasted the rest of the way. The track is dry, Pomponio will have lane choice in the final round against Veney. 3:08 p.m.

Results for Final Round
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - FastNews Network - Results of final, round 4 eliminations in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 44th annual Amalie Oil NHRA Gatornationals:
 W/L Driver R-Time E-Time Speed

 (W) Dan Pomponio (Pomponio Racing Monte Carlo) 0.045 5.609 259.61
 (L) Todd Veney (Permatex/Follow A Dream Impala) 0.068 6.988 140.11
Veney and his team had a mad thrash in the pits, and were late getting up to the line. They got to the line just in time, then did a shorter version of their regular burnout.

Pomponio is 0-1 in final rounds, Veney is 0-4, so both drivers are looking for their first win in TAFC.

Veney got over near the centerline, steered away, then lifted as Pomponio thundered the rest of the way.
