With one thrilling blast August 2, 1964 at Island Dragway in Great Meadows, N.J., "Big Daddy" Don Garlits wiped clean the NHRA record books and became the first driver to exceed 200 mph. Garlits' "Wynn's Jammer" entry covering the quarter-mile in 7.78 seconds and crossed the finish line at 201.34 mph,
The run broke both ends of the National Record, which had been held concurrently by the teams of Schubert & Herbert, Gotelli Auto Supply, and Paul Southerland at 7.91, and by the M&R Special at 198.66 mph, making Garlits' one of the sport's biggest record leapfrogs to date.
