"Sneaky Pete" Robinson, the respected young Atlanta-based engineer turned Top Fuel racer, broke a five-year winless drought at an opportune time, winning the World Finals at Southwest Raceway, in Tulsa, Okla., to become the 1966 NHRA Top Fuel World Champion.
Robinson, whose last victory prior to the Finals came in a gas-powered dragster at the 1961 Nationals, was one of seven divisional winners pre-qualified to compete at the Finals. He met and defeated fellow Ford-powered racer Connie Kalitta, Canadian Scott Wilson, Tulsan Wayne Burt, and, in an East versus West, Ford versus Chrysler final-round battle, Californian Dave Beebe. Robinson also set low e.t. at 7.195 seconds.
