In one of the sport's most storied moments, Top Fuel ace Don Garlits expanded upon his already legendary status at the 1967 Nationals in Indianapolis. Garlits had failed to qualify at the Winternationals and Springnationals, but came to Indy with a new dragster determined to make good.
He clinched the title, his second at the Nationals, in dramatic fashion, defeating both of Roland Leong's potent "Hawaiian" entries, then climaxed the title with a victory over James Warren. Garlits, who had vowed not to shave until he had run in the sixes, stunned everyone with his first six, a 6.77-second blast, to win the event, leading to his shaving his beard in celebration on the starting line.
