NHRA kicked off its "Super Season" -- its most ambitious campaign ever -- with new races and new classes, and the Winternationals proved a great opening act. The inaugural Pro Stock eliminator title was won by Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins (pictured) while Larry Dixon posed with his three-year-old son, future Top Fuel driver Larry Jr., at his side in the Top Fuel winner's circle.
After flying through the shutdown area at the 1969 Winternationals, Larry Reyes and Roland Leong redeemed themselves with a resounding Funny Car win while long-suffering Don Hampton finally scored in Top Gas and Barrie Poole became the first Canadian to win an eliminator bracket at a NHRA national event.
