McEwen's first win, Garlits' record
blasts make for a super nationals
The 1973 season-ending Supernationals truly were super for two well-known drag racing veterans. Long-suffering Tom "the Mongoose" McEwen (pictured) scored his first career national event title in Funny Car while "Big Daddy" Don Garlits dominated in Top Fuel with a barrage of five-second passes leading to him setting both ends of the national record at a stunning 5.78, 247.25 mph.

Both drivers soloed to their titles as first Dale Emery, whose Jeg Coughlin-owned Camaro was destroyed in a semifinal win over low qualifier Don Prudhomme, and then R. Gaines Markley, whose "Assassin" dragster was destroyed in a semifinal win over John Stewart, were forced to watch from the sidelines.
