The 1983 Golden Gate Nationals took its place among the annals of NHRA's greatest performance races, led by the histrionics of Gary Beck (pictured), who clinched the NHRA Winston Top Fuel title with a stunning 5.39 pass, the first sub-5.40 in history, at 252.10 mph to beat Gary Ormsby's 5.54, 230.76 in the quickest and fastest Top Fuel race ever.
Billy Meyer won Funny Car over Raymond Beadle, 5.75, 245.90 mph to 5.78, 246.57, in the quickest Funny Car race of all time while Frank Iaconio won Pro Stock after a 182.18-mph pass in qualifying, the best mph by a Pro Stocker in a national event and Vern Moats broke into the 6.30s in winning Alcohol Funny Car.
