Top Fuel's past met its future in the final round of the 1985 U.S. Nationals where veteran "Big Daddy" Don Garlits met young Darrell Gwynn in a titanic match-up between fellow Floridians. "Big Daddy" won Indy for a record seventh time and became the first NHRA Top Fuel racer to ever win five titles in one year when an oil line came loose and greased Gwynn's rear tires.
Gwynn's chances of a first-ever national event Top Fuel title and Garlits motored on to his 28th career win in NHRA competition, 5.57 at 260.56 mph to Gwynn's 5.75, 250.13.
