In a semifinal round of the 1986 Gatornationals, "Big Daddy" Don Garlits became the first Top Fuel driver to exceed 270 mph when he defeated a surprising Dan Pastorini with to a Low E.T. of the Meet 5.409 at 272.56 mph in the quickest and fastest side-by-side run in drag racing history, bringing 40,000 partial Florida fans out of their seats, roaring their lungs out for the homestate favorite.
Garlits, at the wheel of his revolutionary "Swamp Rat XXX" streamliner, carried that momentum all the way to the Gainesville Raceway winner's circle in the car's debut, capping it with an exciting final-round victory over Dick LaHaie.
