Shirley Muldowney, horribly injured in a 1984 racing accident in Canada, won for the first time since her return to competition in 1986 when she defeated Darrell Gwynn for the Fallnationals title in Phoenix.
For Muldowney, the most famous female in motorsports and a three-time NHRA Winston Top Fuel champion, the victory was as much redemption as it was a return to glory. "I prayed that this would happen for us. But many times I've said, 'I have won my share.' The sport has been good to me. If I left today, I'd have to say that I'm satisfied. I just wanted a little respect, that's all."
