Gwynn’s rising star cut short of its
zenith, but he continued to shine
The life and racing career of one of drag racing’s brightest stars took an unexpected and tragic turn Easter Sunday 1990 when Darrell Gwynn suffered severe injuries in a high-speed crash during an exhibition run in England. Gwynn’s dragster chassis broke in two, sending him on a frightening ride that left him paralyzed from the chest down and forced doctors to amputate the lower portion of his left arm.

The remainder of the year seemed dedicated to Gwynn and racers and fans donated money and took part in benefit events to raise money for his recovery. Gwynn returned to the track later that year as car owner, a role that he has successfully adopted since.
