NHRA Winston Funny Car champion John Force was named the 1996 Driver of the Year Dec. 9, becoming the first drag racer to receive the prestigious annual motorsports award in its 30-year history. Force joins an elite group of auto-racing legends who have won the annual award since 1967, including Mario Andretti, Richard Petty, A.J. Foyt, and Dale Earnhardt.
Force collected his unprecedented sixth NHRA Winston Funny Car championship and also won 13 of 19 national events, and appeared in 16 final rounds, both NHRA single-season records. Force received eight first-place votes from a select panel of nationwide motorsports media members to outpoint NASCAR Winston Cup champion Terry Labonte.
