Warren Johnson, whose impressive top-end numbers have been the trademark of his 20-plus years in NHRA Pro Stock competition, became the first member of the Speed-Pro 200-mph Pro Stock Club with a 200.13-mph clocking at the Pennzoil Nationals presented by Trak Auto.
Taking advantage of a well-prepared track and weather conditions best described as "mineshaft," Johnson made the historic run during Friday evening's qualifying session on a run clocked in 6.894 seconds; both were national-record times, but Johnson eclipsed them with clockings of 6.883, 200.53 in Sunday's first round of competition. As the first member of the Speed-Pro 200-mph Pro Stock Club, Johnson received $25,000 from Speed-Pro.
