racers score homestate wins

STANTON, Mich. – In the final results for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series from Mid-Michigan Motorplex, three Michigan racers took home big wins in this the second of seven events in the North Central Division.

In Comp, Woodhaven, Mich., resident Steve Ambrose knocked off Grand Rapids, Mich., racer Brad Zaskowski with a 7.992-second lap at 161.87 mph. The win is Ambrose's first of the year while Zaskowski's runner up finish will help his points total. Zaskowski was third in points coming into this weekend's event with help from a win earlier this year in Brainerd, Minn.

James Kaekel Jr. and Daniel Joe Hedges also picked up wins for the home state with Kaekel of Coloma, Mich., winning in Stock over Steve Polhill and Hedges winning over Wayne Jones in Super Street

Former Super Gas National Champion Todd Stewart made his trip from home in Atwater, Calif., pay off with a win in Top Sportsman over Rick Corn. Stewart's '67 Camaro clocked in at 7.528 seconds, 173.91 mph for the win.

Ryan Bolin doubled his pleasure winning the Super Gas Shootout, a race within a race, on Saturday and coming back on Sunday to take the Super Gas trophy. Bolin of Wilmington, Ill., ran 9.938 seconds at 145.55 mph to win over Ray Connolly.

The Super Stock win went to Matt Antrobius in his '87 Camaro running 10.087 seconds at 131.82 mph over Eric Stewart in an '84 Cutlass and Janice Swan of Indianapolis, won in Super Comp over Duane Mrowinski.

North Central Division racers head to Route 66 Raceway outside of Chicago July for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, July 14-16.

Racing kicks off at Central Michigan

STANTON, Mich. – Racing kicked off today at Mid-Michigan Motorplex for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series with Chad Voges taking the pole position in Comp Eliminator in his '02 Camaro. With nearly $150,000 up for grabs, the Lafayette, Ind., runner is followed by Robert Bailey of Wabash, Ind., and Steve Ambrose of Woodhaven, Mich., in his '23 T-Ford. Brad Zoskowski of Grand Rapids, Mich., is currently third in the points chase and is qualified 16th in the 25 car field.

Dave Layer of Daytona, Ohio, joined Voges on top, qualifying No. 1 in Super Stock with his '87 Camaro running 10.410 seconds. Charlie Westcott of Parma, Mich., is second in his '98 Grand Am.

In Stock Eliminator, Bob Schroder of Peconic, N.Y., leads the field in his '69 Camaro followed by Donald Holmes of Dayton, Ohio, and Zeeland, Mich., racer Tony Goodman in his '78 Trans Am. A pair of Illinois racers lead the Top Sportsman class with Rick Corn of Benton, Ill., in the No. 1 spot running 7.103 seconds at 188.79 mph followed by Tim Kirman of Morris, Ill., at 7.144 seconds, 195.05 mph.

In the Saturday Night Super Shootouts it was Richard Forish winning in Super Comp, Ryan Bolin in Super Gas, Vern Johnson of Richland, Mich., in Super Street, and Geoff Turk in Top Super Stock.

NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing series makes stop in Stanton

STANTON, Mich. – Mid-Michigan Motorplex will host the NHRA North Central division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series for a two-day event, July 1 and 2.  The race is the second of six on the division's schedule.  It will feature drivers in six categories vying for points leading to divisional and national championships.  The division's Top Sportsman class will also run in conjunction with the event and the National Snowmobile Drag Racing Association will run one of its three races in conjunction with the North Central division. 

Pro Stock Snowmobiles will run qualifying and eliminations along with the other categories.  A Jet Car and Wheel Stander exhibition is slated for Saturday night.

Grand Rapids, Mich., racer Brad Zaskowski is off to a quick start this year.  He competes in both the Comp Eliminator and Super Stock classes and at his last event, an out-of-division meet in Brainerd, Minn., Zaskowski went to the final round in both categories and came away with a win in Comp Eliminator and a runner-up finish in Super Stock.  Coming into Mid-Michigan Motorplex, Zaskowski is in third place in Comp Eliminator and is tied for second place in Super Stock.  He trails reigning division and national Comp Eliminator champion Jeff Taylor of Floyds Knobs, Ind., by just one point and is 32 points behind current points leader Douglas Stewart of Edwardsburg, Mich.  In Super Stock, just 20 points separates Zaskowski and Jeff Dona, Gordonville, Mo., from points leaders Ken Schindler, Hendersonville, Ky., and Brandon Wilkinson of Bowling Green, Ky.

Ron Erks of Clinton, Mich., is another dual-class competitor.  The division's defending Super Gas champion is currently No. 1 in Super Gas and Super Comp.  He opened the year with a Super Gas win at an out-of-division race in Bradenton, Fla., and was runner-up in Super Comp at the division's season-opener at Indianapolis (Ind.) Raceway Park.

Rock Haas, White Lake, Mich., is the defending division Super Comp champion.  

At Indianapolis Raceway Park he took the win in Super Gas and went to the fifth round in Super Comp. 

Gates at Mid-Michigan Motorplex open at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.  Qualifying and time trials start Saturday morning at 10.  Top Sportsman and Comp Eliminator will qualify at 12:30, 5 and 8 p.m., and Pro Stock Snowmobiles will qualify at 5:30, 7:30 and 9:30 p.m.  The Jet Car and Wheel Stander exhibition will run at 6 p.m. Saturday.  Eliminations start at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event are $25 Saturday and $20 Sunday.  A two-day ticket is $40.  Children 6 to 12 years old are $5 each day and kids 5 and under are admitted free.  Each ticket includes a free pit pass.

SUNDAY, July 2 -- Gates open at 8 a.m.  Eliminations begin at 9:30 a.m.

PURSE: The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors will vie for cash and contingency awards of $174,050, as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $560,000.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND: A $561,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2006 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional champions and national champions.  Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.  The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEG'S ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $100,000 point fund from Jeg's High Performance.  The 2007 Jeg's Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes.  The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2007 Jeg's Allstars.  Points are based on in-division races only. 

The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions.  Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece.  Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $20,000 towing fund to get to the event.

North Central Division Top Sportsman Class: Run in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Series, competitors in the Top Sportsman class are vying for division championships and a share in the $3,200 event purse as well as points leading to a divisional championship.

Top Sportsman racers may run the six North Central Division Lucas Oil events as well as three Lucas Oil Series races in either the Southeast or South Central Divisions.

The North Central Division Top Sportsman year-end champion will earn $2,000, No. 2 points finisher will receive $1,000 and the third place competitor will earn $500.

FEATURES: More than 400 drivers in the eight racing categories.  The division's Top Sportsman category and Pro Stock Snowmobiles will also run in conjunction with the race.  A Jet Car and Wheel Stander exhibition is scheduled on Saturday night.
