Event preview:
NHRA North Central Division Racers debut at Summit Motorsports Park
NORWALK, Ohio – Summit Motorsports Park will host its first NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event May 18-20. The Ethanol/GM Cavalcade of Stars presented by Budweiser and Ohio Lottery will feature nearly 600 cars in eight classes, including 250 mph Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car. The event is the first of seven for drivers in NHRA's North Central division who are vying for valuable points leading to divisional and national championships. The division's Dart Top Sportsman class and the Spitzer Race Cars Top Dragster category will also run in conjunction with the race.
The North Central division is among the most competitive in NHRA. Out of seven categories, the region boasts four 2006 national champions including Bill Reichert, Owosso, Mich., in Top Alcohol Dragster; Bo Butner, Floyds Knobs, Ind., in Comp Eliminator; Randy Wilkes, Zanesville, Ohio, in Stock Eliminator; and Ron Erks, Clinton, Ind., in Super Comp.
Reichert, who also earned his fifth North Central division title in 2006, will begin working toward a second national crown. Last year he put together a string of five straight divisional event wins and won four NHRA national events. Although he has not made an appearance on the divisional level yet, he's been to two NHRA national events and was runner-up in Gainesville, Fla., and he scored the win in Houston. At the Houston race, Reichert reset both ends of the Top Alcohol Dragster record, making a 5.103-second pass in the semis and blistering the track with a 284.75 mph run in the final.
Reichert will be challenged this year by former division titlists Marty Thacker of Robinson, Ill., and Dave Hirata, Lowell, Ind. Ken Perry, Gormley, Ont., and Grand Rapids, Ohio's Dave Heitzman will also be in the hunt for the division crown. Hirata was runner-up
to Reichert in Indy last year and Reichert bested Thacker at Gateway Int'l Raceway in St. Louis. Perry scored the win at last year's race at Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green, Ky.
In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Mick Snyder of DeMotte, Ind., is vying for his fourth consecutive division championships. The former NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League competitor opened last season with a win at an out-of-division race in Cecil, Ga., and was runner-up here. He then won at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., and in St. Louis. Among those taking on Snyder for the crown will be Marty Nothstein of Orefield, Pa.
Prior to earning his Top Alcohol Funny Car license in 2005, Nothstein was a champion cyclist. In fact, during his 12 year cycling career he earned gold and silver medals from two separate Olympics, seven world championships, 35 national titles and more than 150 race wins. When Nothstein opened the 2007 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series season with a win at an out-of-division race in Bradenton, Fla., beating veteran stand-out driver Jay Payne in the final, he became the first Olympic gold medalist to win an NHRA event on any level.
