Event preview:

EAGLE POINT, Ore. – Champion Raceway will host the Northwest Championship, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, June 29-30.  The race is the fourth of six on the NHRA Northwest division calendar.  It will feature drivers in eight categories, including 250 mph Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, vying for valuable points leading to divisional and national championships.  The division's Top Sportsman and Top Dragster categories, as well as the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson, will run in conjunction with the race.

Will Top Alcohol Dragster rookie Thomas Bayer be able to outrun the rest of the class to earn his first division title in the category?  Wheeling the dragster of reigning division champ Steve Federlin, Bayer has made good progress.  When Federlin, an Oregon City, Ore., resident, decided to step out of the driver's seat and concentrate on tuning the car, he called on Bayer to take over driving duties.  But Bayer is no stranger to championship runs, in 2006 the Fontana, Calif., resident earned the NHRA Pacific division titles in both Super Comp and Super Gas.    For his part, Federlin drove and tuned the car to three consecutive division crowns.

Defending division Top Alcohol Funny Car champion Brian Hough will face his own set of challenges this season.  The Junction City, Ore., racer had his best year in 2006, earning his second division title and finishing third in the national point standings.  He won both the national and divisional events at Pacific Raceway's in Kent, Wash., as well as three other divisional races, including this one.  Hough will take on the likes of Clint Thompson of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Sunburst, Mont., resident Hank Coolidge.  They were the division's top three points earners in the category in 2006.

North Bend, Wash., racer Jeff Lane will try to defend two titles this season after earning the division championships in Comp Eliminator and Stock Eliminator.  The always-competitive Jody Lang of Puyallup, Wash., will give Lane a run for his money in Stock Eliminator.  And in Comp Eliminator, Bob Marshall, Sardis, B.C., and Dan Barton, Post Falls, Idaho, will be among those on Lane's trail.

Gates at Champion Raceway open at 9 a.m. both days.  Qualifying and time trials start at 10:30 a.m. Friday and continue Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to noon.  Eliminations begin at noon on Saturday.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car qualify at 3, 6 and 9 p.m. Friday and they will run first round of eliminations at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Champion Raceway are $15 Friday and $15 Saturday.  A two-day pass is $25.  Children 9 years old and under are admitted free.

Champion Raceway is located in the Jackson County Speed Park.  From Medford, take I-5 north to Crater Lake Highway exit 30 (Hwy. 62).  Go east to Highway 140 and turn right to Kershaw Road.  Then turn left to Thunder Road into the track.  For more information call the track, (541) 830-3724, or visit the web site at
